I believe this was the song they did on the Smothers Brothers show, and did the whole destroying the instruments shtick at the end of the song.  I recall having my young mind blown at the time.

No, it was "My Generation" & the whole clip is on the DVD The Kids Are Alright.  Moon had secretly rigged an M-80 or something (a lot bigger than a firecracker anyway) in his drum kit, and when it went off it not only deafened Townshend for sevearl minutes, it caught a little bit of his hair on fire, which you can see him patting out with his hand.

I certainly could be wrong, but did they play "I Can See for Miles" another time, or on another show back then?

Since I love the Smothers Brothers but was too young to appreciate them on TV, I was interested to find this site: http://www.smothersbrothers.com/episodes.htm

They had all kinds of musical talent on the air, but The Who only appeared once, and from what's in the DVD The Kids Are Alright, it seems pretty clear that they only played the one song.  Whether or not they played "I Can See For Miles" elsewhere is beyond me, but if anyone finds that they did I would love to know the details.

I guess the single was released around the same time, as the single was 1967 October 14 "I Can See For Miles", and the Smothers Brothers was just a few weeks before that on 9/17/67.  Perhaps radio had the single ahead of the release date, because my distinct memory is hearing it on the radio in tight proximity to the Smothers Brothers show.  It was quite revelatory at the time.
