While we're discussing Motown... on the rack at Starbucks this morning was the "new" Diana Ross CD, Blue, a jazz/standards collection recorded in '73 (in the wake of Lady Sings the Blues) and then shelved -- until now.

Late '68 is when Motown "discovered" social realism -- Temps did "Cloud Nine" and "Runaway Child" then too.
Makes me wonder why Marvin had so much trouble getting WGO recorded, which is why I was asking.

That's exactly what it was.  The songs for WGO were much looser in structure and Marvin wanted to record them at his own pace -- both anathema to Gordy's bottom-line ways of thinking.  I wonder if WGO would ever have been released had Stevie Wonder not won emancipation at age 21 the year prior.

Any of you have a comprehensive Motown collection I could burn from? I used to have a multi-album set, like 5 or 6. From the '70s, came in a blue box, can still picture it. Got rid of it early on and totally regret it now.

LOL! Me too -- in the '80s during "Big Chill"-mania, I bought all the vinyl "Anthology" sets... Tempts, Supes, Marvin, Martha & the Vandellas. Have yet to replace 'em with CDs, tho' I do have What's Goin' On? in that format.

Ali, was that "The Motown Story", with narration between the songs?
