I think the issue with WGO was that Marvin wanted creative (producing/writing) control, whereas "Love Child" was the usual Motown staff creation, "daring" as the lyrics may have been.

Any of you have a comprehensive Motown collection I could burn from? I used to have a multi-album set, like 5 or 6. From the '70s, came in a blue box, can still picture it. Got rid of it early on and totally regret it now.
