I got the original (& superior) version on Youssou's album The Lion, which is a great listen all the way through, especially the title track, which is the song for the Senegalese national football team.



What year was the Youssou N'Dour version released?


1989, the single charted #9 adult alternative according to Billboard, and I have clear memories of hearing it right after I moved to Santa Barbara that September.  After he co-wrote "In Your Eyes" & it became a hit, Gabriel offered to return the favor.  N'Dour had spent most of the previous 2 years opening for Gabriel on tour, including the Amnesty tour.
