it's been a week where the oldest set was from '84. Friday cries out for '70s, at least, but I'm thinking it may be our 2004 debut.
10@10:05? RR is a tad behind sked.
ETA: 1970! SCHWEET! Starting with little-heard Van the Man. Impressive.

Looking to borrow trouble?
I note that in 2013, the first 2003 set didn't appear until late September. But 2003 actually
debuted in September 2011, a month after the first appearances of both 2001 and 2002.
Also debuting in 2011 was 2000, on July 12th.
I'm in no hurry to hear 2004.
-
Won't be around for this one. Hope it's good -- take notes!
-
10@10 lead-in: Fitz And The Tantrums
Or maybe not, here's R.E.M.

Well, they had to fit in the RR/GG dialogue, whatever that was about.

really -- Renee hates football? WTF?
-
Somebody clearly saw Matthew McConnaughey's acceptance speeches this week. "All right, all right, all right!"
-
Swore I heard a '3' at the end of the lead-in. Need my ears check, I guess.
-
Van Morrison bats leadoff with "I've Been Working"
-
VHM CCR, "Up Around the Bend" is still one of my 2 or 3 faves of theirs.
-
CCR, after a long Vietnam segue hitting 2nd with "Up Around The Bend".
-
This is the creepiest Clapton tune ever.
-
BOS1 this Clapton rarity: "Easy Now".
-
This is the creepiest Clapton tune ever.
Haven't heard it in forever, I like the line "when i'm without you i fall down and graze my knees"

I don't remember the last time I heard it. Was kind of ambivalent about it.
-
"Candyman"! -- a Dead rarity gets a BOS2 and proxy of geoff. This must be another Bill Pugh set. More of these please.

Yes I heard this too

Yeah, this so far has been a 180 from yesterday.

Me too, BOS.

Haven't heard it in forever, I like the line "when i'm without you i fall down and graze my knees"
But "Easy now, don't let my love flow out of you" paints an unsavory mental picture for me.
-
Bobby Bloom, a onetime Moreytrina (will we get the Rodgers & Hammerstein coda?)
ETA: nope!
-
BOS3 Kermit : "It Ain't Easy Bein' Green" -- oh wait, it's a Sesame Street medley! Yay!
-
uber-BOS4 S&G "Only Living Boy in NY", one of my all-time faves. *swoon*
-

Wow, I haven't heard this in ages... Big BOS!!
-
I'd love it if this is "ballet for a Girl..." but i'll settle for "Make Me Smile". BOS5
not the ballet but we got the long ending at least.
OMFG: McGuinness Flint, "When I'm Dead & Gone" -- BOS6
-
BOS Chicago sounding mighty fine...
-
Chicago's "Make Me Smile", while not rare, gives this set a bit more tempo. VHM
-
#8: When I'm Dead and Gone - McGuinnes Flint, which had a bit of an "Eight Days A Week" feel to it.
-
OMFG2: George, "Awaiting on You All", uber-uber-BOS7.
And the pope owns 51% of General Motors
And the stock exchange is the only thing he's qualified to quote us

Great song, another big BOS from me -- one of my all-time-favorite George songs -- Woo Hoo!!
-
VHM Tower Records commercial.
BOS8 Quicksilver "Fresh Air" -- well-worn but still welcome. This set has been stellar.
-
I suppose this set had four songs which aren't exactly rare, but are welcome, whereas the rest of the set was stellar.
Waiting for dischead's comment on how the bar is set high for 1970 in 3, 2, 1....

The production is a bit messy, but maybe it's my boom box and not enough volume. Not one that I've been exposed to much.

I'm having a hard time picking a single BOS. I think I'm going with the TOTHK. Great kickoff to a great set.
-
No on-air credit to Pugh today, but clearly he or Rosalie had input -- no way Renee did that on her own. But kudos to whoever was responsible.
-
Per Renee: BOS Quicksilver
VHM: Chicago

1. I've Been Working - Van Morrison
(News: Vietnam)
2. Up Around The Bend - CCR
3. Easy Now - Eric Clapton
4. Candyman - Grateful Dead
5. Montego Bay - Bobby Bloom
(Sesame Street song medley)
6. The Only Living Boy In New York - Simon & Garfunkel
7. Make Me Smile - Chicago

9. Awaiting On You All - George Harrison
10. Fresh Air - Quicksilver Messenger Service

Haven't heard it in forever, I like the line "when i'm without you i fall down and graze my knees"
Not sure I recognize these lyrics. A bit much, eh?
Holding you, you holding me
Everyone could see we were in ecstasy
Making love against the wall
Feeling very small when we didn't need to be
Easy now, don't let my love flow out of you
Please remember that I want you to come too
Oh my darling, help me please
When I'm without you I fall down and graze my knees
I look so funny and I feel sad
Your love is all I've ever had, so please don't tease
Easy now, don't let my love flow out of you
Please remember that I want you to come too
Yesterday, you know tomorrow
Could it be I'll have to borrow someone new?
I know that I'm the one to blame
But all the same, there must be something you can do
Easy now, don't let my love flow out of you
Please remember that I want you to come too
Easy now, don't let my love flow out of you
Please remember that I want you to come too
Easy now, don't let my love flow out of you
Please remember that I want you to come too

He wants her to come too! How romantic!

He wants her to come too! How romantic!
That line doesn't bother me as much as his love flowing out of her while making love against a wall. Gravity is a bitch.

Per Renee: BOS Quicksilver
VHM: Chicago
Go figure: I catch the RR/GG chatter before the set and hear RR's BOS/VHM vote counting but not the actual set.

really -- Renee hates football? WTF?
IIRC, Renee was bitching about not being able to use the terms "Super Bowl", "49ers" or "Seahawks" because of some legal thing by the NFL -- I was paying close enough attention to the chatter beyond that.
She was going to watch some marathon on some other channel when the game is on.

Well, the Super Bowl thing is true -- it's a trademarked phrase -- but of *course* you're allowed to say the names of teams. Jeebus.

And it's not like it can't be referred to something such as "The NFL Championship Game" or something like that. Although, I would agree that radio DJs not being able to use the term is rather lame.

Just finished listening to the set. Kudos, indeed, to those responsible for putting it together!

I always think of this cover art for this period of Quicksilver:

This is the creepiest Clapton tune ever.
It certainly is, by today's standards. I'm trying to view it in the context of the times. The Women's
Lib movement was just starting. I think it's a sincere, if clumsy, attempt to be sensitive and
understanding. It's a little off though, and if it kept going in the same direction it would veer into
parody.

Bobby Bloom, a onetime Moreytrina (will we get the Rodgers & Hammerstein coda?)
ETA: nope!
Actually, three spins by DM and two by RR.

Oh dear. Have I become so predictable?
I would remind you that extremism in the defense of musical excellence is no vice! And let me
remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of great tunes is no virtue!
Yes, I grade on a curve, so to speak. But with a year like 1970, a blind, arthritic, dart-throwing
monkey could pick a good set. So to get a top grade, the show would have to be fantastic.
Let's review the score. Only Chicago and George Harrison come close to being FFs, and each fall
just short of ten plays. There are four bust-outs: Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, The Dead, and
Simon & Garfunkel. The spins of each of the remaining songs can be counted with the fingers of
one hand. I'll also note that clip montages from previous hosts were used.
So it's a show with a very low LNQ. And yes, Candyman was a wonderful surprise. And
that Simon & Garfunkel song... it can take me places that I would need to write a great novel
to describe. But there's more to an excellent 10@10 than bust-outs, and it's where you start
getting into aesthetics and the vagaries of taste. Although there were some inspired choices
today, for me the set as a whole didn't gel. I found it a little disjointed. I'm willing to admit that
probably reflects more my personal reaction than to the content of the show.

Well, the Super Bowl thing is true -- it's a trademarked phrase -- but of *course* you're allowed to say the names of teams. Jeebus.
One must be careful of how the phrase is used, and in particular it can't be used to leverage
the visibility of the NFL's trademark for gain without the NFL's permission. Of course, they don't
care if I tell my friends that I'm having a Superbowl party, but if a business decides to hold a
Superbowl Party, then they're benefitting from recognition of NFL's trademark. Of course, a
media outlet like KFOG is more visible than Joe's Pizzeria in Podunk, so they have to be more
careful.
One of the many reasons I have come to detest the Olympics is because they are rabid about
this kind of brand protection, demanding that explicit laws be passed by the host city. In London,
businesses couldn't even use "2012" in their advertising, let alone hint at anything with five rings.

VHM Tower Records commercial.
Renee mentioned that commercial also got BOS votes and rated a VHM.
1970, and I was on the cusp of switching from 45s to LPs. The store of choice: Korvette's. They
had what I remember as a large record department. I tried to wait for the good sales: three LPs
for $10!

Yes! I was a cassette guy at that time and Korvettes always had the best sales. Already name-checked several times in my writing. (My characters don't have a lot of money)
