10 Musicians who have served in the military. Well, I wasn't expecting this, but OK.
-
Elvis (of course) to start. "Jailhouse Rock"
-
MC Hammer, "U Can't Touch This"
Ah *TOLD* you, homeboy!

I think it was Tropic Thunder
Jeezus, "Oh Carolina"? Really?
-
BOS Mr Cash, "I Walk the Line".
-
I feel like Renee just Googled "singers who served in the military" and grabbed the first 10 on the list.
-
Any other guesses who we may hear? Hendrix is the only one who immediately comes to mind as a vet.
-
BOS2 Jimi "Castles Made of Sand". This is beginning to resemble the Memorial Day set.
-

Yup, mine too. And here he is.

Which will probably produce a better set than if she had put a lot of thought into it. I'm enjoying the disjointedness of the selections.

Well, that didn't take long. Next?
-
BB King. The thrill is gone, all right.

+1
And another +1. If one just googled "10 songs that have appeared on KFOG", the list wouldn't be much different. You'd think somebody totally unexpected would've popped up, like Foster The People or Samantha Fox (both of whom probably didn't serve).
-
BOS2 Jimi "Castles Made of Sand". This is beginning to resemble the Memorial Day set.
And it didn't really have to stop, it just kept on going
brilliant line.
-
BB King. The thrill is gone, all right.
hey!
Nothing against Mr King, but it;s a fairly obvious choice from a fairly obvious "longtime Foghead favorite"
-
song #7 is not ringing a bell.
-
song #7 is not ringing a bell.
Filter. "Take a Picture"
I like this one.
-

Filter, Take a Picture
I'm trying to find the service history in the band, but so far have only seen that singer Richard Patrick is a big supporter of the troops. Well, that's probably good enough.
Never mind: http://www.defense.gov/News/NewsArticle.aspx?ID=49236
Maybe she put a fair amount of thought into this, after all.

Tool, Sober
-
Tool, Sober
Sounding good.
-
UberBOS, Tool.

Oh look, it's most of today's set!

VHM Private Benjamin.
Jerry Garcia, that great war hero! BOS3 "Sugaree"
-

Well, she had to find three artists to replace Mystikal, Ice-T, and Coltrane.

Awww, don't be sad, Mike. Does it really matter what the source is?

awww... Tony leaves his heart.

it does, to me. She probably saw that linked in somebody's FB feed last nite and said "score!"
-

BOS. Better choices as we've gone along.

She should acknowledge it if that's where she got it.

Did she really just compliment herself on digging deep?

Somebody should post that on the KFOG page.

And did she say "Maynard and James Keenan"? That would suggest extreme uncluedness, but maybe I misheard it.
-

Maybe not the first that comes to mind when you think of anti-war musicians, but he belongs on the list:

I did not know that. I feel like I should buy one of his CDs now.

rad hinted at it by making a request for Mystikal, one of the three unplayed artists from that list, for 2014, then I requested the other two, Ice-T and John Coltrane. The response was that she tried to get Ice-T on today, but she would have had to make too many bleep-outs. Production is hard work, yo. Anyway, she didn't seem to get that people were on to her source.

Renee writes speeches for Rand Paul in her spare time.

She could've played the NOW version of Mystikal, "Shake It Fast", which is somehow more funny than the unbleeped version.

Did you recognize the movie dialogue before this?
I think it was Tropic Thunder
My guess as well. It probably appears on the IMDB quotation page for the film, if I was bothered
enough to look for it.
-
Although there were some nice moments, overall I thought today's set was too much of a mish-mash.
I think a more interesting idea would have been to go back to the origin of Veteran's Day: Armistice
Day, and a show with ten songs about peace. Of course we would have had the LN Give Peace A
Chance, but there might also have been gems like Tom Paxton's Peace Will Come. (Do I hear
the wheels turning in CapnJack's head already?)

TANC: I have a Paxton best-of sitting in front of me that I just got -- the Rhino collection from 1999. Sadly, it does not include "Peace Will Come". I was a big fan of his back in the early prog-FM days, when he was a staple -- "Whose Garden Was This?", "Talking Vietnam Pot Luck Blues", "Forest Lawn" and many others.
Paul Simon's "Armistice Day" would've been appropriate too.

yes, I'm almost certain it was that movie, Tropic Thunder, which is a really weird pick for Veterans Day. ::)
One she missed that I would've liked: Heatwave. The group was founded (co-founded?) by an American who served in Germany. Rod Temperton was in that group, btw.
-

LOL. (I had to go look it up.)
Also interesting, according to Wiki:
Inspired by Bill Murray's performance in the 1981 comedy film Stripes, Keenan joined the United States Army, with the intention of having the G.I. Bill fund his dream of attending art school.[1]
That's like being inspired to join the Marines by watching reruns of Gomer Pyle.

no, that's what she said.. "Maynard AND James Keenan of Tool. Both in the Army"
go to the 44:40 mark here:

ROTFL. That's the comment of the week, Rod.

Two thumbs up, Rod ;D

"Give Peace A Chance" wouldn't necessarily be an LN if I were compiling this -- I'd either do a medley
of several different rehearsals of the song by Lennon and company during the Bed-In or choose a live
performance. :)

You'll recall that WNEW frequently played many of the tracks from his Peace Will Come album,
including the title track, The Hostage (about the Attica Prison riot), Jesus Christ SRO,
and the whimsical I Lost My Heart On A 747.
Paul Simon's "Armistice Day" would've been appropriate too.
Other obvious choices include:
Cat Stevens - Peace Train
George Harrison - Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)
Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding?

5. Jimi Hendrix - Castles Made Of Sand

Did she really just compliment herself on digging deep?
To be fair, she was talking about the Filter tune when she mentioned digging deep, which was one of the three she had to come up with to replace the hip hop stuff from the Paste list. So she *did* dig for that one. But considering 70 percent of today's set was cribbed from someone else's homework, yeah, talking about "digging deep" seems more than a little ingenuous.

Thank you CapnJack for posting the Redding list, which seems much more appropriate:
Mon 11/11/13: Veterans Day
1 Bette Midler/Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
2 Bruce Springsteen/Born In The U.S.A.
3 The Band/The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
4 Buffalo Springfield/For What It's Worth
5 James Taylor/Soldiers
6 Talking Heads/Life During Wartime
7 The Shirelles/Soldier Boy
8 Gang Of Four/I Love A Man In A Uniform
9 SSgt Barry Sadler/The Ballad Of The Green Berets

the subj matter certainly is more veteran-centric, but I thought a theme set of music by vets was pretty good. Did RR copy some of her set from other sources? yes, I bet she did. who doesn't do that?
