"The year of Marathon Man and Taxi Driver" sez our hostess.
-
TOTHK - Thin Lizzy "The Boys Are Back In Town"
-
TOTHK: Thin Lizzy, as unnecessary a '76 track as I can think of.
-
Bruce Jenner eats Wheaties into Hot Chocolate "You Sexy Thing"
-
Bruce Jenner still needs Wheaties, considering the family he married into.
uber-LN2: "You Sexy Thing". If that was supposed to be a clever segue, we're in trouble.
ETA: we heard this in a '75 set a month ago...

I adore this one! never get tired of it -- although it def is LN for shizzle.
I'm not listening, just lurking.
-
The Rolling Stones "Hot Stuff"
-
oy: Stones, "Hot Stuff". Not one of my faves of theirs, tho' it's better than "Fool to Cry".

RGMike, what would be your requests from '76? If Renee actually took requests... ;)

Dischead has mentioned that 1976 was one of the weakest years ever. So far, this set has done nothing to prove him wrong.

my '76 wish-list from the AL era -- one of the few years I never got her to play any of my requests in.
I Don’t Wanna Go Home/You Mean So Much To Me (Southside Johnny/Jukes)
Who’d She Coo? (Ohio Players)
Heat Treatment -or-Hotel Chambermaid -or- Pourin it all Out (Graham Parker)
Love Really Hurts w/out You (Billy Ocean)
Don’t Leave me This way (Harold Melvin/Teddy P)
Fanny -or- Love So Right (Bee Gees)
You to Me Are Everything (Real Thing)
Life in the Air Age (Be-Bop Deluxe)
Hard Work (John Handy)
Who’s Your Boyfriend (Piper)
Could it be Magic (onna Summer)
Hangin’ on the Telephone (the Nerves)
-
Elton John and Kiki Dee "Don't Go Breaking My Heart"
-
uber-LN3: Elton and Kiki, even if there's something subversive about a gay guy and a lesbian singing a love duet. We've heard this one recently, too, no?
-
Stevie Wonder "Sir Duke"
ETA: This was a hit in '77... And there were 26 #1's in '76 to choose from, Renee... ::)
-
and the hits just, well, you know.
uber-LN4 Stevie, "Sir Duke"

I'll give her a pass since the LP debuted at #1 in the fall of '76, so for once her "year of release" rule doesn't annoy me. "I Wish" woulda been equally LN.
-
Rosalyn Carter on Jimmy's Playboy interview into Elvin Bishop (Mickey Thomas) "Fooled Around And Fell In Love"
-
Carter "lusting in his heart" --> "Fooled Around & Fell in Love". Heh.
the short version?
VHM Santana, tho' I heard this on the morning show a couple days ago.
-
Santana "Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)"
-
Cincinnati Reds defeat the New York Yankees to win the '76 World Series into Climax Blues Band "Couldn't Get It Right"
Didn't this chart in '77?
-
The big Red Machine wins the World Series. The Yankees "Couldn't Get it Right". And neither can Renee today.
-
OMFG: "The Fever"!! uber-uber-BOS SSJ&tAJs -- I'm gobsmacked!
-
Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes "The Fever"
-
OMFG: "The Fever"!! uber-uber-BOS SSJ&tAJs -- I'm gobsmacked!
Maybe she read your '76 requests post ;)
-
Mother, Jugs & Speed (I think) Car Wash into Rose Royce "Car Wash"
-
Car Wash -->"Car Wash". Renee's idea of a disco/funk rarity. ::)
-
Renee: BOS SSJ&tAJs
-
Renee: BOS SSJ&tAJs
can ah get an "Amen!"? Nice to see. But I suspect half the Fogheads thought it was Broooce.

Dischead has mentioned that 1976 was one of the weakest years ever. So far, this set has done nothing to prove him wrong.
It's a year that requires more discernment and effort in order to make a good set. Regretably
those qualities seem to be on tight ration these days.
The choice of Sir Duke is illustrative. A quick look reveals that I Wish is perhaps one of
the most played songs, with at least seventeen spins. But Sir Duke is another FF at fourteen.
You'd expect Isn't She Lovely? to be up there, but Black Man passes it with four over
two. And that's it. I mean, it's Stevie fucking Wonder for crying out loud, and this is perhaps
his magnum opus -- a double album AND a four-song EP. There's some amazingly beautiful pop
music here. Frankly, just about the entire thing is -- dare I say it? -- Wonder-full. (grin) You'd
have to work just to pick the one or two tracks that are below par. Even at random chance the
odds are way against you. And yet we get the same two songs with the highest LNQ.
And that's why 10@10 is so damn disappointing these days.

I've always wanted to hear Spirit's "Like a Rolling Stone" in '76.

It's fairly easy to cherry-pick a good set from any year. For a year like 1976 it's more difficult to do
that every other month... but that's not my problem today.
Somewhat paradoxically, 1976 saw the release of three of my all-time favorite albums, so I'll start
there.
801 Live (Phil Manzanera, Brian Eno, et. al.) is one of the top rock albums. Their cover of TNK
(Tomorrow Never Knows) would be a great TOTHC. Other good choices for the set include
East of Asteroid, Diamond Head, Sombre Reptiles, and Rongwrong. Annalisa played Baby's On Fire
from this album.
Go! (Stomu Yamashta, Steve Winwood, Michael Shrieve, Klaus Schulze, and Al Di Meola)
I'd avoid the space rock interludes and pick either Crossing the Line or Winner/Loser, two of the
strongest Winwood vocal tracks.
ETA: These two tracks were included in the 1995 Winwood compilation The Finer Things.
To which I would also add Man Of Leo and Ghost Machine.
Hejira is my favorite Joni Mitchell work, so either Song for Sharon, Furry Sings the Blues, A Strange
Boy, or Refuge of the Roads. Annalisa has played Coyote.
Since Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life sparked this discussion, I'd pick one of Knocks Me
Off My Feet, Summer Soft, or Ordinary Pain.
I'm a fan of the Dan, and while The Fez has been overplayed on 10@10, neither Kid Charlemagne
or Haitian Divorce have reached that point yet, and I really like them both. Green Earrings would
be a bustout though, so I'd probably go with it instead.
It's been a while since I've heard Jeff Beck's Wired, and I can't connect the song names with
specific tunes, but I'm sure one of the tracks would work. Annalisa has played Led Boots.
I think the '70s are the Golden Age of Funk, so let's go right to the mothership for Parliment's Do
That Stuff or maybe I've Been Watching You (Move Your Sexy Body).
More funk: I don't have Johnny Guitar Watson's Ain't That a Bitch, but I'll bet there's a great track
there.
Disco was also on the rise in 1976, but I'm not familiar enough with the genre to pick something
really good from that year. No problem -- how about Frank Zappa's Disco Boy?
To make ten, I might go with something from Bob Marley's Rastaman Vibration, or perhaps some
light R&B with George Benson's Breezin', which was a big hit.
(Apart from 801's TNK as a TOTHC, I'm not necessarily suggesting this song order.)

Stop the presses! How could I have overlooked the opportunity to suggest some Gil Scott-Heron
with perhaps Johannesburg?
