Renee's clue: the year we were introduced to "The Un-Cola". (that's 7-Up for you youngsters)
ETA: we last did '67 on June 12th -- so we're back to individual '60s years coming up on a monthly basis, maybe.
ETA2: Renee's chatting with Tim and implying that it's '72 or '73. WTFF?
-
TOTHK - 1973 - Elton John "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting"
-
Nothing wrong with '73, but sheesh enuf with the incorrect clues already.
EJ, "SNAFF" is a good, if overplayed, TOTHK.
-
Noo Yawk, jus' like ah pitchered it! OMFG: a black person! VHM Stevie.
-
Stevie Wonder "Living In The City"
-
BOS Bowie, "Panic in Dee-troit" -- a song about a black city, yo.
-
David Bowie "Panic In Detroit"
-

From New York to Detroit. (Midnight Train to) Georgia next?
-
Carly Simon "You're So Vain"
-
Sonuvagun! Carly's lips are kinda black. VHM "You're So Vain"
Best Mondegreen of Set: "the wife of a clothespin"
Electric Company, another nod to DM.
-

Carly's got clouds in her coffee. I prefer a little half-and-half myself.
-
ooo! some Broooce to soothe the savage 'snipes. BOS2 "Growin' Up". Nothin' black about this one, tho'. Well, Clarence, I guess.
-
The Electric Company into Bruce Springsteen "Growin' Up"
-
BOS3 Jackson Browne, "Redneck Friend", nudgenudge winkwink.
-
Jackson Browne "Redneck Friend"

One of his songs I can still listen to (with pleasure). :-)
-
the 'oo, "Love Reign o'er Me" is kinda LN IMHO, but it coulda been worse. This has been quite enjoyable so far.
-
The Who "Love Reign O'er Me"
-
Morey reference 2: Flash Bazbo! BOS4.
And our daily song-from-the-wrong-year: "Radar Love", a Summer of '74 hit.
-
National Lampoon Radio Hour into Golden Earring "Radar Love"
-

Why research new clips when Dave did it so well in the first place?
Still, can't complain about any Firesign Theatre National Lampoon bits.
And fully agree about the mis-assignment of Radar Love to 73. I distinctly remember hearing it several times a day during a family car vacation to the Spokane Worlds Fair in the summer of '74 (along with Tell Me Something Good and Clap For the Wolfman, among others).
-
The O'Jays "Love Train"
-
OMG! More black people! Quick, call off the NAACP!

Wiki sez it was orig released in '73 but NOBODY heard it until the following summer.
OMG: more black folks! So of course we get "Love Train", an Oldies 103.7 special.

and some Zep too! BOS5
"Dancin' Days" "Houses of the Holy" which I think RR played fairly recently, no?
Yes, Percy, I *am* dizzy when I'm stoned. Thanks for asking.
-
Led Zeppelin "Houses of the Holy"
-

The last '73 set in June led off (see what I did there?) with The Ocean. And isn't this Houses of the Holy, which is on (counterintuitively) Physical Graffiti, which came out in '75?
ETA: Yep.

that's hilarious. I did mis-identify. But yeah, it makes sense to RR that "Houses of the Holy" would be from, er, Houses of the Holy.
And capn jack's '73 set will sound real good right now.

Renee sez: Carly gets BOS; 3-way tie for VHM: Stevie, Bowie and Zeppelin

Renee just lost any Zep cred she had accumulated -- her personal BOS is often a Zep track.

BOS, Carly. An overproduced wonder.

BOS, Carly. An overproduced wonder.
Robert Christgau "the dean of American rock critics" (as he loves to call himself) had a theory that "any fool can make one great pop 45" -- and he often cited "You're So Vain" as Exhibit A. I don't think Carly is a fool but you can see his point.

There may be some truth to that, and more recent examples would include Kesha, Rebecca Black,
and Psy. But I don't think it's who, but when, that matters. Perhaps "any fool" can make
a great pop 45, but they can't necessarily do it at will. If that were so, then anybody and
everybody would be turning out hit singles whenever they wanted, and raking in the cash.
There's simply no telling when lightning will strike and the public's fancy gets caught in a big way.

Overproduced? Compare with "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be."
