RR's clues: "if you build it they will come" and "Oakland wins the World Series".
2NG is doing a '67 retro-chart today and I'll stick with that, thanks.
Predictions: FYC, "Love Shack", "Everything is Broken"

TOTHK - Tom Petty "Runnin' Down A Dream"
-
BOS Tom Petty
One of my faves by TP, necessary or not.

Wow, it's one of my least favorites of his. I just can't abide that riff.

The Alarm "Sold Me Down The River"

I like that riff but I can't resist singing "neener neener neener neener" along with it.
-
LN Petty. The Alarm gets a pass from me, for now.
-
The Call "Let The Day Begin"
-
Oh no, not the Alarm AND the Call. Yawn.
-
except for a couple of AL excursions, '89 is a year that has rarely surprised and often annoys. It was traditionally one of Dave's worst. Oh, for some "Walk the Dinosaur" or Kon Kan.

I'm with Davefish on the opening riff. It sounds like someone who's been playing guitar for six months noodling around.
-
The Jesus & Mary Chain "Head On"
-
I like the Alarm, The Call, and the Jesus & Mary Chain.
-
Neil Young "Rockin' In The Free World" - apparently a repeat from Renee's last visit to '89.
-

For whatever reason, the KFOG personnel or their assessment of what listeners find palatable exclude the most exciting genres of this period. However, when they venture outside their extremely limited parameters, that song often wins BOS.
-
Neil Young "Rockin' In The Free World"
unless Renee goes to school, '89 sets will never get to be cool.
-
Keep on rockin' at Marineworld!
-
The Cure "Pictures Of You"
-
This sounds like a carbon copy of an AL 89 set, so far.
-
Bonnie Raitt "Thing Called Love"
-

my thoughts exactly, and AL's were often a Dave set plus a couple of more new wavish things like J&MC or the (very) occasional pop nugget like "Buffalo Stance" or "Bust a Move".
This set is crying out for "Cuddly Toy"
-
The Pixies "Here Comes Your Man"
-
The Pixies "Here Comes Your Man"
BOS.
-
Bonnie Raitt "Thing Called Love"
AKA "My Mortgage Payment" by John Hiatt.
-
The Cult "Fire Woman"
-
The Cult "Fire Woman"
Haha, I was thinking we've heard the Cure and the Call, now all we need is the Cult. And here they are!
-
Glad I'm not listening but seriously this set gets a D-minus for originality.
-
As annoying as the over-the-top rants have gotten, equally annoying is the effusive praise RR often gets for these pedestrian efforts. I understand pulling for the underdog or trying to rescue the damsel in distress, but there's a limit, people. The best option at this point is maintaining a dignified silence.
-
got here late -- I do like Jesus & Mary Chain's Head On. Dig that wall of sound. Same goes for Cult...
thank god I missed TP.
-
Stone Roses "Fools Gold"
-

You're being generous.

the people praising her on the KFOG FB page are not... us. Not music geeky types. They're the "typical Fogheads" who are perfectly happy to hear the same songs every time.

But that's so boring.

I'd love to see the Stone Roses. armed with a hit or two.. :)
the loooong version of Fools Gold sounds purty good.
this song single-handedly brought back the wah-wah pedal & phase shifter industry
-
Renee: "Oh phooey!"

Yeah, it was nice to hear the full outro.
Hey, any word on a reunion or tour? ;)

ETA: Oh, I get it... :)

Per Renee: Stone Roses BOS, The Cult VHM
thanks for the song ID's
I was listening to most of it, but it mainly sounded relentless and annoying. I usually like the Neil Young cut, a lot, but in this context it was just another noise machine. I have no memory of Bonnie Raitt, as it doesn't fit the rest of the crew!

1. Tom Petty - Runnin' Down A Dream
(News: U.S. has right to defend itself)
2. The Alarm - Sold Me Down The River

5. Neil Young - Rockin' In The Free World
6. The Cure - Pictures of You

(Movie: Drugstore Cowboy)
8. Pixies - Here Comes Your Man

My alternative 1989 playlist:
1. Paul McCartney - My Brave Face
2. Elvis Costello - Pads, Paws And Claws
3. Madonna - Cherish
4. De La Soul - Me Myself And I
5. Roachford - Cuddly Toy (Feel For Me)
6. Bee Gees - One
7. Was (Not Was) - Walk The Dinosaur
8. Lyle Lovett with Francine Reed - What Do You Do / The Glory Of Love
9. Surface - Shower Me With Your Love
10. Marshall Crenshaw - Radio Girl
Bonus tracks:
Neneh Cherry "Kisses In The Wind"
Samantha Fox " I Only Wanna Be With You"
Janet Jackson "Miss You Much"
Soul II Soul "Keep On Movin'" or "Back To Life"
Jody Watley "Real Love" or "Friends"
Paul McCartney/Elvis Costello "You Want Her Too"

I have no idea if I'd enjoy your choices whatsoever, but I'm sure it would be much more interesting than today's set was. I'd probably recognize some of them if I heard them, but it's not what I was listening to in '89.
-
9. Surface - Shower Me With Your Love
While I can understand this not being played, I would be very interested to hear the KFOG audience reaction if it were.

again, several from my wishlist there -- I requested "Walk the Dinosaur" and "My Brave Face" multiple times. AL played "Me Myself & I" several times, actually. Love the BeeGees tune too.

9. Surface - Shower Me With Your Love
While I can understand this not being played, I would be very interested to hear the KFOG audience reaction if it were.
It would probably get LOTS of BOS votes. The notion that DC and management seem to subscribe to -- that Fogheads have ONLY listened to KFOG-ish rock for the last 25 years and would not recognize an urban/pop hit -- is, I think, quite false.

Ditto for me on both counts. It's puzzling, though, that Soul II Soul never or rarely gets played. They cut across a lot of listenership lines then.

Yes. I agree that a lot of listeners are thirsting for variety.

didn't know the song, looked it up, listened: Started chair dancing ever so smoovely.
I, for one, would welcome our Jherri-Curled crooning overlords.
