The year Hagar The Horrible made its debut. Of course, this could also mean the year Sammy Hagar released his first solo album.
-
Predictions: Stealer's Wheel, Stones, Marvin Gaye, Jim Croce, Wings, Elton, Paul Simon. Reapeat from the last '73 set (12/17/12): "The Joker"
-
as noted on FB, this is only Renee's 3rd visit to 1973. Here are the first 2 -- guaranteed we hear at least one repeat from one of these, sez me.

1. Paul McCartney/Wings - Helen Wheels
2. ELO - Showdown
3. Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Still... You Turn me On
4. Billy Joel - Piano Man
(National Lampoon - Flash Bazbo, space explorer!)
5. Steve Miller - The Joker
6. Jackson Browne - Ready or Not
7. The Who - Love Reign O'er Me
(Commerical - Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A)
8. Frank Zappa - Montana
9. Hall and Oates - She's Gone
(News: Watergate)
10. Grateful Dead - Eyes of the World
10/8/12:
1. David Bowie - Jean Genie
2. Pink Floyd - Breathe/On The Run
(TV: Schoolhouse Rock - Three Is a Magic Number)
3. Faces - Ooh La La
4. Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On
5. Paul Simon - Loves Me Like a Rock
(News: Call upon Richard Nixon to resign)
6. Sweet - Ballroom Blitz
7. Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show - Cover of The Rolling Stone
8. Bruce Springsteen - For You
(Movie: American Graffiti)
9. Led Zeppelin - D'yer Maker
10. Stevie Wonder - Living For the City
-
Van the Man starts us off with "Jackie Wilson Said".
-
TOTHK - Van Morrison "Jackie Wilson Said"
-
Van & "Jackie Wilson" -- an acceptable TOTHK.
-
Repeat #1: The Who "Love Reign O'er Me"
-
repeat #1: the 'oo, "Love Reign O'er Me" -- she HAS to be doing this on purpose. I just don't get it.
-
It's one thing to repeat in say, a 1997 set, but not for an early 70's year.

The problem is in the "Costco-ization" of music, is that as time goes by, programmers see less and less in each older year, even if the year was chock-a-block with great music.

VHM Schoolhouse Rock, tho' it's a '73 cliche at this point.

The Isley Brothers "That Lady"

Oldies 103.7, meet 98.1 Kiss-FM: Isleys.

I think both Dave and Annalisa used this clip in their eras; I'd call it as egregious a FF as anything else we've heard, if not moreso.

Then I will repeat my comment that this was my favorite song when I was 15.

"Three is a Magic Number" was played in Renee's 1st visit to 1973...

You should be imprisoned in a one, two, three lock box for saying that.

Dawson's dad died in a car crash listening to this song -- trying to pick up an ice cream cone he had dropped on the floor.

We're halfway there; need something from Goat's Head Soup.

Really, it'd be appropriate to follow Bruce with Cream judging by the G-Snipe response. Who cares if they didn't release anything that year.. this is Renee.

if that turns out to be anything other than "Angie" or "Heartbreaker" I'll be stunned.

Only eight months separated the releases of Greetings from Asbury Park and The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle -- the latter of which was released on 9/11.

Gregg Allman "Midnight Rider"

Gregg's "Midnite: Ride Her" gets a VHM.

Gregg Allman "Midnight Rider"
great album, great version. I saw this band live at Winterland.

Gladys and her Pips are taking the midnight train to Georgia.

last song before I have to bail for a meeting: Gladys and the biggest Pips in showbiz.
Let me know if I miss anything earth-shattering. (As if!)

Yeah, dream on Mike.
WOS, "Dream On".

Aerosmith "Dream On"
My thirteen-year-old cousin (once-removed) did a bang-up version of this at his bar mitzvah.

Today would have been a good day for the thankfully discarded cut-and-paste FB thread. I could have found out if I was right about the price of a K-tel record. The price of gas must have fluctuated wildly, though.
-
Renee: "Boo!"
-
Joe Walsh "Rocky Mountain Way"
I'll BOS Joe, when he was good (pre-Iggles).
-
Renee: "Boo!"
She's trying to show that enthusiasm everyone wants to hear, but it is coming across like a laugh track.
-
Renee sez Springsteen, Allman and Walsh are in a 3-way tie for BOS.

She has moved on from the price of gas - I'll give her that. Instead, she's blindly defending repeating songs from previous sets.
-
Gladys and her Pips are taking the midnight train to Georgia.
what a great song!

wow, did she actually say something about that? I was seriously planning to send DC an email about that very thing.
uber-uber-LN-and yeesh/sheesh: Aerosmith -- so happens I heard "Dream on" this morning as it was "Breakfast with Aerosmith" on K-Fox.

2. The Who - Love Reign O'er Me
(TV: Schoolhouse Rock. Three is a magic number)
3. The Isley Brothers - That Lady
4. Dobie Gray - Drift Away

From her response to my post on KFOG's page:
I don't recall the last 73 I did, sorry, but the song is pretty great so there's that. From Wiki: "Love, Reign o'er Me" is a song by English rock band The Who. Written by guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend, it was released on 23 October 1973.

Van & "Jackie Wilson" -- an acceptable TOTHK.
Checking the Whitburn charts book, this song charted in 1972...
-
Since it's Friday, here's an alternative 1973 playlist:
1. Fred Wesley & The J.B.'s - Doing It To Death
2. Ringo Starr - Have You Seen My Baby
3. John Prine - Dear Abby
4. Paul McCartney & Wings - Single Pigeon
5. Four Tops - Are You Man Enough
6. George Harrison - Who Can See It
7. Carole King - Been To Canaan
8. John Lennon - Out The Blue
9. Roy Ayers Ubiquity - Brother Louie
Track 10 could be any of the following:
10a. Lamont Dozier - Fish Ain't Bitin'
10b. Billy Joel - Captain Jack
10c. Brighter Side Of Darkness - Love Jones / Cheech & Chong - Basketball Jones (megamix, like DM used to make 'em)
depending on how adventurous you want to get. :D
Would any of the above would be DC/RR approved? ::)

Fabulous stuff, cap'n. "Fish Ain't Bitin'" (one of my all-time faves) charted in '74 but of course Renee would probably play it in '73 anyway.

in a word, NO. Well, actually I can see the 4 Tops tune making it (I think Dave played it once or twice; ditto "Doin it to Death" and "Basketball Jones"). And AL would've done her damndest to sneak in "Dear Abby" right after Ms Van Buren's death.
I just heard "Been to Canaan" on the Peak's 10@10 recently and I know they've played "Captain Jack" too which is a very NY-centric tune.

Ahh, you're right... I think I just had that song in my head when you mentioned it in the KPOO thread recently... :)

Here is another 1973 playlist I made in December (the time Renee last visited that year):
1. The Chi-Lites - Stoned Out Of My Mind
2. Michael Nesmith - Some Of Shelley's Blues
3. Gladys Knight & The Pips - Daddy Could Swear, I Declare
4. Gunhill Road - Back When My Hair Was Short
5. Spinners - One Of A Kind (Love Affair)
6. Cross Country - In The Midnight Hour
7. The O'Jays - Time To Get Down
8. Tom Jones - Letter To Lucille
9. New York City - I'm Doin' Fine Now
10. Badfinger - Timeless
11. Donny Hathaway - Love, Love, Love (bonus track)
This had more a Soul Patrol feel to it...
