That's like a Connected 10-pack, without a strong topic or the freedom to choose interesting songs. Awesome.

I do hope this is the time Warrant's "Cherry Pie" makes an appearance. Not betting on it.

I'm thinking it will -- how many "Pie" songs are there, anyway? I'm predicting Dean Martin, "That's Amore" (when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie...) which AL has played in a Valentine's set.

She also seemed to indicate 'sweet' songs would be played, which opens it up a bit.

So, does this mean we won't get a St Patrick's set on Friday?

If we do, I'll be shocked. This one will be the fourth theme set in a month (Valentines Day, Movie Monday and the Grammy Songs of the (Leap) Years set) so it would appear that DC is getting over his aversion to them, but two in one week would be too much to hope for.

Busy day @ work -- listening but not posting for the next hour or 2 unless something totally gobsmacking gets played.
-
it must be noted that Pi Day originated at the Exploratorium, here in SF! *giggle!*

Give me a piece of that "Custard Pie"!
BOS LZ.
-
BOS for the mighty Zep! I don't actually know this song. But it rocks harder than anything we've heard in quite some time.

"Custard Pie". From Physical Graffiti. Side one, track one.
Not that I'm overly familiar with the album...

It's nice to wash down Paul McCartney's old-timey Honey Pie Rudee Vallee-style vocalizing with some Custard Pie.
I'm sure an ATBB..?

BOS2, Sade.

No, of course not ;)
Was that a Twin Peaks clip? He mentioned the Lady with the Log, but the voices didn't sound familiar. Funny clip, in any case.

Sweetest Taboo?

Gordon was played by David Lynch himself:
Shelly: Um, um, do you want pie with your coffee?
Gordon: Good Lord, I can hear you perfectly. This is like some sort of miracle. A...a phenomenon.
Log Lady: What's wrong with miracles?
Gordon: WHAT'S THAT?
Log Lady: This cherry pie is a miracle.
Gordon: WOULD YOU PLEASE ASK THE LADY WITH THE LOG TO SPEAK UP.
Shelly: Um, the pie, she was talking about the cherry pie.
Gordon: I heard you again. I heard you again.
Shelly: Would you like some pie?
Gordon: MASSIVE, MASSIVE QUANTITIES AND A GLASS OF WATER, SWEETHEART. MY SOCKS ARE ON FIRE.

uber-BOSes LZ & Sade -- and this clip from the sweet movie Waitress with Andy Griffith is wonderful.

Haha, I like James. Do you suppose this is the TOP horns horning in on those two?
-
I *love* Jay & the Techniques but sadly this is not the orig version of "A P PP" -- it's one of those re-recorded-for-another-label things.
-
BOS 3, "American Pi" (so sue me).
Pretty cool little parody seque, too.
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! uber-LN "American Pi, er, Pie"
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! uber-LN "American Pi, er, Pie"
AL could make up for it by including Eugene Levy quoting from the movie of the same name.

that clip was funny. AL shoulda played the whole thing: the song that never ends...
...doorstep...
...more step...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! uber-LN "American Pi, er, Pie"
At least it's not the Madonna version.
-
BOS3 Dean-o -- as predicted.
-
I could do without Dino this morning. Actually, not Dino per se, but "Amore".
-
And here's your "Cherry Pie", BOS4 (just this once).
-
Eek, what's with the TP clip again? Short-term memory problem, AL?
-
I could do without Dino this morning. Actually, not Dino per se, but "Amore".
it's an Italian-grandma thing.
WOS2 Warrant -- yes, I know its beloved by some. ::)

As Rod said, once in a blue moon, particularly this one, is appropiate.

I'm giving it special dispensation today. I feel that every classic track should have an occasional entry point into a 10@10. Just don't make it a habit.
-
WOS2 Warrant -- yes, I know its beloved by some. ::)
yeah, it's pretty wretched. It might be something I liked if I was a young teen when it was current.
"Swing it!"
.. But it def belongs here. I liked this set.
-
Overall, A for effort -- we need more of these AL-goes-all-out theme sets.
I even liked the Family Guy bit -- much as I hate the show, I appreciate McFarland's love of over-the-top absurd musical numbers.
-
Just a little disappointed that my Golden Smog suggestion (Pecan Pie) didn't get any love--I'd thought the Jeff Tweedy connection might have given it enough recognition to get some traction, but alas not.

I dunno, man. Shorter definitely, but infinitely more painful to listen to. Which is saying something.

yeah, it had to be Don McLean's original epic, and not Madge's pallid karaoke version. I never cared much for it, but now I dig American Pie and its imagery and language which I don't think I will ever decipher.
I do recall this time in college (I went to a Catholic university for a while), this frat-boy cover band did American Pie, and SOOO many people were all "Whoo-hoo!" when they sang the line "The three men I admire most, The Father, Son and The Holy Ghost." I was like "OMFG" (no pun intended).

I used to detest this song with a passion, but have grown to tolerate it recently. Same goes for "Margaritaville", which I used to associate with Union Street douchebaggery.

wretched excess, wretched boredom, wretched guitar, ugh!

Overall fun set, but boy do I hate "American Pie". Pseudo-intellectual symbolism, singalong chorus repeated way too many times, boring chord progression, uncomfortable rhyming. Ugh!

TANC: Some kid requested this as their goodbye song at preschool today. "Whiskey and rye...day that I die". Grrrrreat.

In addition to all I've said before, this song is emblematic of Boomer navel-gazing. Yeah, everything was so much better in the 50's. We just don't understand how cool music was then. I'm pretty tired of hearing that, or anyone who focuses too much on the past.
I like to envision sappy, nostalgic Don in his Chevy on the levee when...
A CATACLYSM OF POUNDING ZEP GUITARS AND HARMONICA BLASTS THROUGH THE DIRT WALL, DROWNING HIM IMMEDIATELY.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_the_Levee_Breaks
Imagine that Don's whining came out just as a groundswell was building just out of his sight. He just couldn't see it because he was looking back.

dude, EVERYBODY thinks the music of their youth was awesome. But seriously, the song is about lost innocence, using the history of rock (which was only 15 years old at that point) as the conduit for that. McLean was 26 when he wrote the song; the idea of "Boomer navel gazing" barely existed yet. And the lyric is actually quite critical of youth culture: "we coulda had peace and love but we fucked it up".

Don McLean does have a whiny tone. I'm sure more than a few have wanted to smash him with a Les Paul. I remember in sixth grade our teach played his song 'Vincent' for the class, saying it was really awesome, beautiful, deep, etc. We were all Wha..? this is boring. our teacher was obviously a hippie trying to indoctrinate us into an awareness of art appreciation or love or something. Bastard!
anyway, the link. interesting stuff. I just read through what each verse is supposed to mean, per the web site author. Don McLean wrote a personal song that became a huge hit, that's about all I know or care about it. When I hear it on the radio, I don't run to turn it off like I used to, but I don't want to be accused of navel gazing. (I do enough off that over less interesting stuff.) I had heard it was about Buddy Holly, et al, dying, but never listened too closely to the rest. I like pop, I like a lot of crappy music, and often they are the same thing. That time in college I mentioned, when all the frat boys and sorority girls were cheering the lyrics "...the three men I admire most: the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost," I was thinking two things: 1. goddam, you guys are REALLY Catholic; and 2. How the hell did you learn all the words to this oldie? Maybe one of those frat boys wrote that site.
However, I would like to answer the web site author and posit MY own interpretation of one specific passage. Mr. McLean mentions "forward pass" in Verse 5. Few people know that the verse originally alluded to, in version one, a "double-reverse," and then later to a "flea-flicker." However, the NFL, in collusion with General Motors, had traction with certain government operatives that pressured the music publishing company to change those lyrics because they feared a backlash from the ghost of recently-departed Vincent Lombardi (which I shall explain further when I create my own web site byebyemissamericanLIE.info). McLean folded under that threat, but still wanted the album cover to show a red white and blue MIDDLE FINGER. Under further threat (deportation to Canada), McLean caved completely and we have the supposed "classic" that has been fooling American white people for years.

You may be right, but just because you're tired of hearing something, that doesn't prove it's true or not true.
