Title: 2 March 2012: it's 1972
Post by: RGMike on March 01, 2012, 03:12:08 PM
Whatever it is I'll be elsewhere. But '71 seems to be the year we haven't done in quite a while, and since we got both '69 and '78 last week it would certainly fit nicely.

Close, so very close. I don't think you'll turn it down, though.

As always, keep copious notes, kids.  I'll catch this one on the replay

Great year, and nice start...  Dickie Betts and the Allman Brothers at their best IMO.

BOS, ABB, of course.

The Stones tune was a semi-rarity, but I was involved with something and was only able to pay attention with a small percentage of available brainpower (which diminishes daily as it is).

Me too.  Years ago I bought 'Highway Call', solo by Richard (Dickie) Betts.
Great album, with his distinctive guitar/vocal style, like on 'Brothers & Sisters' -- though a bit more country...

I like America, but this isn't my favorite.  I guess I always thought of it as a Neil Young knockoff.

Many confused America's "Horse" with Neil, whose 'Heart of Gold' was also on the charts at same time, both tunes hitting #1.  You'll recall America went on to win Best New Artist Grammy for '72, unlike many of those winners, they actually continued to put out hits (thanks in large part to working with producer George Martin).

Works for me.  This one makes me feel like I'm still a young man.

"A Horse With No Name" makes me feel like a dino.

Stones 'Shake Your Hips'(?) into Archie & Edith into Al Green 'Let's Stay Together'

That was Sweet Black Angel (or sometimes called Black Angel).

Did the Stones take any gruff for this one?  The lyrics are fairly out there for 72:

ETA: I imagine the rednecks who never liked the Stones in the first place weren't surprised that they came up with this rabble-rousing tune:

SWEET  BLACK ANGEL
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)
aka Black Angel

Got a sweet black angel,
Got a pin up girl,
Got a sweet black angel,
Up upon my wall.
Well, she ain't no singer
And she ain't no star,
But she sure talk good,
And she move so fast.
But the gal in danger,
Yeah, de gal in chains,
But she keep on pushin',
Would ya take her place?
She countin' up de minutes,
She countin' up de days,
She's a sweet black angel, woh,
Not a sweet black slave.
Ten little niggers
Sittin' on de wall,
Her brothers been a fallin',
Fallin' one by one.
For a judge they murdered
And a judge they stole,
Now de judge he gonna judge her
For all dat he's worth.
Well de gal in danger,
De gal in chains,
But she keep on pushin'
Would you do the same?
She countin' up de minutes,
She countin' up de days,
She's a sweet black angel,
Not a gun toting teacher,
Not a Red lovin' school mom,
Ain't someone gonna free her,
Free de sweet black slave,
Free de sweet black slave.

I've always loved Ventura Highway and Tin Man.  They both feature excellent bass lines.

Thanks for the correction, I was half-distracted here at work during that song.  Now I'm on the good foot.

Ah, now i remember.  As you might guess, I'm not much of a fan (though all three of these are undeniably singalongable(?)).  I will listen to the bass lines next time one comes up...

Also 'Sandman' (preferably the longer album version), it builds up and gets cookin' -

The song is a tribute to activist Angela Davis, in jail on murder charges at the time of songwriting.

one of my 4 or 5 fave Woody Allen films, and probably the one that gets shown the least on cable.  I saw it 3 times in the theater that year. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.

The set: notsomuch. Some good tunes, but "Swedisha Hykah" is unnecessary and of the 4 R&B tunes, only the JB counts as underexposed. (I never need to hear "Lets Stay Together" or "I'll Take You There" again. Sorry.). BOSFRA the Stones tune which appears to be a genuine bustout.
