"Hey 10@10'rs. I'm playing around w/a different idea for Father's Day 10@10 next week. 'Father Knows Best' -- bands/songs your dad introduced you to...as introduced by YOU. I'd record listeners introducing each of the tunes. What do you think?"
Cute, no?

Hmmm, bands my dad introduced me to. That'd be a pretty short list, but it has possibilities. The Limeliters...the Smothers Bros... or maybe Tom Lehrer. It goes downhill from there.

Yeah, I think AL is thinking "Gen-Xers whose boomer parents turned 'em on to the Beatles and LedZep" but she's getting boomers whose parents turned 'em on to Glenn Miller instead. LOL!
-
Hate to say this, but I have a really bad feeling about how this will turn out. Sounds like a set tailor-made for the Sandra Ramirezes of the world.
Personally, if I were a truthspeaker, I could say the Beatles or Three Dog Night. But he always kind of had it on the background... I really can't say he INTRODUCED me to anybody.
-

Agreed. Sadly, nobody's dad turned them on to Captain Beefheart or the Jam or the Pixies.
-
We had a lot of Broadway Musicals, some cowboy folk songs on reel-to-reel, and perhaps some Spike Jones? 45's we had included Puff the Magic Dragon, and Little Drummer Boy.

And my kids don't listen to KFOG, so they wouldn't be contributing!

This mama's working on it! (Well, the last 2 anyway) 8)
This would've been a cool Mother's Day idea. My mom was a huge Donna Summer fan!
-
I will be requesting the Kingston Trio, about as hip as my dad ever got... Well, he probably had some Rat Pack records too, ...
-
I totally have Puff the magic dragon memories. Beatles for sure. Had the Hey Jude 45 and first album was Magical Mystery Tour. My Dad took me to the Northpoint theater to see Tommy when it came out. Dolby sound!

Like many of you about my age, my dad's records consisted of Herb Alpert, Smothers Brothers, Alan Sherman, Bill Cosby, some country, lots of folk, jazz, big band and Broadway cast albums. The only rock albums I recall were an Elvis greatest hits and Bill Haley & the Comets.

So, is AL sticking with the "my dad introduced me to..." concept?
and do we get TWO theme sets next week? Friday is the Pride Set, obviously, but Tues is the first day of Summer.

My expectations are really low, so naturally we'll be blown away by a Sandra Ramirez sonnet about Siouxsie & The Banshees.

well, you were close: Meredith Santiago is one of the participants. Hope her dad turned on on to Tito Puente.
-
awww... AL's dad was an Army deejay!
And Caroline's dad loved "Sundown". in a room where ya do what ya don't confess. Unless yer name is Wiener.
-
and another Facebooker heard from: Lisa Corman-Roberts spins "My Girl"
-
This has a flavor of Sledgehammers!
My dad played Herb Alpert, tapped his wedding ring on the steering wheel on the way back from Mass.
RIP 2001
-
VHM Mr Cash.
Agree with Rastermon, re: the Sledgehammery vibe.
-
well, ya KNEW the Beatles would make an appearance. BOS "Octopus' Garden"
-
all daughters so far...?
maybe the boys hated what Dad played.
-
This is really a great idea. Did any of you get solicited by AL? BOS Octopus' Garden. Just played this for my kid the other day. He wasn't feeling it. LOL

This is turning out quite nice and again it's a lot like the "Sledgehammers" sets Dave did about 15 years ago.
-

During the late '60s my parents were about 40, they realized the impact of the Beatles and Beach Boys, so let me play those records on their big hi-fi stereo, but wouldn't let me play the Stones or the Doors. That only happened when they weren't home!

The KC/Circle Star dedication got me.....
-
awww... KC has never made me get choked up before. That was sweet.
-
It's hours like this that renew my bitterness over having a father who didn't love me. It's now been 20 years since I last saw him (in a courtroom) and almost 25 since we spoke civilly.
-

BOS KC and his Sunshine Band.
-
BOS2 Herb & his brass... horns.

You knew we'd hear some Herb & the Brass:

Sorry. This is going to be the last Fathers Day I have my father alive unless medical miracles happen.

Ugh. I'm with you on this one. Never met my dad...though he's living a lovely existence in So Cal. Happy Deadbeat Dad Day!

OK, I Confess, too: my father died when I was three. Stepdad was not, shall we say, a winner.

And my dad died when I was 5. Wow, way to bring ourselves down, eh?
(I did have an uncle who had all the Alpert LPs -- as well as Mitch Miller.)

hey, look on the bright side: at least our dads didn't torture us with Our House. :)

My dad was basically a good man, but had his issues. By now I've forgiven him, and better understand the challenges he faced. He died some 20 years ago, and I miss him...
He also had a lot of Herb Alpert, Kingston Trio and Roger Miller. But his real love was classical, and I can still whistle most of the Oveture to Carmen.

Ouch. Sorry to hear, all. "That's Life," eh? Wishing you all a happy weekend, in any case.
-
OMFG! It's GITER!!! BOS3 Sinatra.
-
Nice dedication from Giter Dunn, but why did he have to choose the crappiest Sinatra song ever? "That's Life" sucks.

That's heresy, my friend. My My!

Yeah, my Pops had Sinatra albums. After all, we lived in NJ, it was required ;)

Eww, he covered "Winchester Cathedral"? Horrifying.
(FWIW, I've met Dean Kay, the writer of "That's Life." He's kind of a jerk, and several years ago he wrote to the Village Voice to criticize a story I'd written about the state of the music industry.)

well, i"m guessing he's pretty old ;) And if Frank's cover of "Mrs Robinson" was any indication, his covers of "those songs the kids are listening to" are generally pretty bad. Tho' he did an interesting job with Cher's "Bang Bang".
and Tinka, looks like you could make some cash selling copies of today's set to the FB crowd. Everybody wants one!
-
I'll BOS Frank, despite the song choice.
My father and mother got together in the 60s and they bought quote a few Sinatra records. As I got older and learned to appreciate Ol Blue Eyes, I eventually took their Sinatra records (on Capitol and Reprise) into my own collection. Still have them, of course, and some I have on CD as well.
When AL first started the Father's Day request thread, I *think* I was the first person to mention Sinatra, but I wasn't all up in AL's grill with some awesome father story and didn't get tapped for a call-in testimonial. (BTW, Giter has a good radio voice, IMO.)
nice theme concept. BOS to all dads ... and to moms who also have to be dads.

So I’m curious on how this worked – was it like “This is GITER DUNN and this is a song my daddy introduced me to. Frank Sinatra and ‘That’s Life’. Time to make the doughnuts!”?

each Foghead told a sweet anecdote about their dad connected to the song in question. Seriously, not a dry eye in the house. It was quite wonderful.

Well, once again I missed this one twice, so if you do put it out there, you know you can count me in.
