Fischer & Spassky play chess; AL plays the hits.
-
Annalisa actually told me that "Popcorn" (my request) popped up in the most recent 1972 set, so I made another selection. I must be catching FB-itis.
-
it's so NICE to be with AL! VHM Gallery.
-
HM to Gallery, hoping for a lot of Philly soul. "Back Stabbers" would be nice; I'm in a pissy mood today.
-
AAAAAACK!! WOS Robert John, one of the most unnecessary cover versions EVAH.
-
WOS Robert John's needless remake of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." That falsetto was the only tool in his chest, and he wielded it shakily.
-
Robert John's version of "Lion Sleeps Tonight". We learned on last weekend's AT40 replay from 11/2/79, that Robert John was one bitter dude after being treated third class by his record company. For example, he received his gold record for this song unframed in a brown paper bag.
-
BOS/proxy of geoff, ABB "Blue Sky" -- didn't we hear this recently?
ETA: yup -- in the same set AL played the above-mentioned "Popcorn". WTF?
-
BOS Allmans, Blue Sky, always a pleasant tune. Reminds me, anyone else see Cher on Letterman last night? Good interview.

they shoulda gave him a styrofoam record for this dreadful thing.

Or maybe just the brown paper bag.

HM from me. I learned this song from an Evan Dando '90s cover.

BOS4 from me, even tho' we're pretty uber-mainstream so far except for Big Star.

Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airman, from Marin/Sonoma, I believe.

A Neil 2-fer from Harvest
"Are You Ready for the Country?" – Young - piano, vocal; Keith - pedal steel guitar; Jack Nitzsche - lap steel guitar; Drummond - bass; Buttrey - drums; David Crosby, Graham Nash - backing vocals
"Heart of Gold" – Young - guitar, harmonica, vocal; Teddy Irwin - guitar; Keith - pedal steel guitar; Drummond - bass; Buttrey - drums; Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor - backing vocals
-
BOS5 Neil on his B-Day. "Are You Ready For The Country" is a nice non-overplayed choice, at least.
uh-oh, spoke too soon -- we're getting "Katrina of Gold" too.
-
BOS Neil, though I don't have a clear favorite (except for Blue Sky, but I bos'd it last time to 72).
I didn't get in the fb thread early enough to get a j geils request in. Of course, AL's played a lot of Geils in recent sets, so I doubt it would have happened anyway.
oooh, a Neil twin-spin. BOS2, Heart of Gold. Another perfect pop song.
-
Yay, a 12@10, nice TGIF !

sweet!

BOS/proxy of geoff, ABB "Blue Sky" --
One of the most perfectly crafted guitar-oriented songs. Sweet, bouncy, and dead nuts killer guitar! The overlap/tradeoff between Dickie Betts and Duane Allman is sublime.
-

That's where they were based in the early 70s, but they originally hailed from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
If you want a good look into the music biz in the early 70s as well as an excellent portrait of CC & the LPA, track down a copy of Star Making Machinery by Geoffrey Stokes. Probably long out of print but it should be available in one used book store or another. Or try Powells.com.
