Title: 28 Oct 2010: it's... 1997
Post by: RGMike on October 27, 2010, 09:26:09 PM
last time we hit this year we were lucky with requests (I got both "Lovefool" AND "Brimful of Asha"). This time I've asked for

Hanson, "MMMBop"
Reel Big Fish, "Sell Out"
Ben Folds Five, "Battle of Who-Could-Care-Less"

ETA: "MMMBop" seems to be getting multiple requests, I'm happy to report.

FYI, here's the last '97 set -- hard to believe it was in mid-August.

Quote
1.  Foo Fighters- Everlong
 2.  Huffamoose- Wait
(TV: Teletubbies-hold hands)
 3.  Cardigans- Lovefool
 4.  U2- Do You Feel Loved?
(News: Local /Mayor Brown new 49r's stadium)
 5.  Portishead- All Mine (BOS!!)
 6.  Beck- The New Pollution
 7.  Third Eye Blind- Semi Charmed Life
 8.  Cornershop- Brimful of Asha
(News of Mother Teresa's passing during Princess Di funeral)
 9.  Widespread Panic- Hope In A Hopeless World
10.  Radiohead- Paranoid Android

at least 3 of the above tunes are being requested again this time. *sigh*

Woo Hoo, indeed.  VHM Blur, tho' this is becoming a bit overplayed at this point

WOS Mighty Mighty BTs, this is a '97 Katrina at this point, and my Reel Big Fish request woulda filled the ska-revival quota in a more interesting way, methinks.

OMG -- here it is!!  BOS "Sell Out". All is forgiven, AL! (these songs appear back-to-back on my best-of'97 mixtape).

VHM to the MMB, although this one (like Song 2) is becoming too much of a Katrina too.

Never could get into this song then, still can't.  WOS Reel Big Fish. (No offense.)  But at least it's not a repeat!

I just checked the archives.

This is trip #4 (from AL) to 1997.

So far we've heard:
Blur 3x  ::)
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones 4x  ::)
Third-Eye Blind 3x  ::)

I'll second that -- I like this song.

Whoa!  Unedited version!

C'mon, it's got banjo AND harmonica!  What's not to like?

I know we've heard this bluesy thing that sounds like ZZTop before (John Lee Hooker?), perhaps from Ginger if not AL.

That's true, the banjo and the harmonica aren't bad.  But in general it sounds kind of droll to me.  That and I don't like the lyrics, for instance "la la la shame on you" in context doesn't really make sense IMO.

Oh good, a song that isn't a repeat or "Closing Time." Woulda preferred "Singing in My Sleep," but VHM Semisonic.

but where have you heard it? KFOG's never played it, afaik, and it wasn't a Live 105 hit either, if memory serves.

Must be RadioParadise.

I'll give a BOS for the Sneaker Pimps, though this gets a lot of play on RP too :).

Hits 106. (http://www.kqky.com)  This is where I was a dozen years ago (& before. :P) & it's kind of stuck with me.  (I do know it got RadioParadise play too, though!) They unfortunately don't have their playlist up right now, but they play a bunch of songs pop stations usually wouldn't be caught dead playing & throw more a few curveballs, at least they did when I listened to it.  They've played a bunch of Garbage songs ("Androgyny" comes to mind as I know that one didn't do so well on the charts), a few Marilyn Manson songs, most of Def Leppard's "comebacks," some random songs by Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Norah Jones (BEFORE she was overexposed with "Don't Know Why" - imagine that), K's Choice (& not just "I'm Not an Addict) as well as most of today's set (including Reel Big Fish & The Indigo Girls) & others.

BOS2 to the Sneaker Pimps...& BOS3 White Town! (Even though this has gotten serious Live 105 overplay as of late)

LOL. You could have figured that out by some of my requests & BOS's there vs. my "wishlists" here, before this nearly word-for-word post, but in that case, I'll just add you. :P

Lew Stone & the Monseigneur Band, "My Woman"! From 1932  :o

& subject matter-wise: his ex-gf was a lesbian so he's saying he could never be her woman.

half this set seemed NTM.  hmmm...  I didn't like that 3rd song, seemed too self-referential.. "Let's sing a song about being rock stars."  Yes, I know it' s tried and true genre, and there are some great takes on that (Byrds' So You Wanna..., Kinks' Top of the Pops is another good one, f'instance) but that one didn't do it for me.

Either the Sneaker Pimps track was a remix, or else I've been listening to a remix lo these many years.  BOS to 6 Underground and White Town!

yes!  I agree...  it gets overlooked, but it's well-written, has its head on straight.  I plays like a family comedy that just happens to be animated.

I had no idea that "Fascinating New Thing" had to be made into an acronymn.

BOS Eleanor McEvoy.

Probably too late for anybody to see this, but yeah, we've been hearing the Nellee Hooper Remix, or something like that.  At least that's what's always played on RadioParadise.  (Plug plug...)
