Title: 25 Aug 2010: it's... 1969!
Post by: RGMike on August 24, 2010, 08:33:22 PM
Hump Day is '60s Day again. Something tells me Sly's "Hot Fun" will make a rather obvious weather-related appearance.

ETA: I opted for Neil D singing about a hot August nite; here's hoping.

Whoa, NTM.  I don't think I've heard any song by Nazz except for "Open My Eyes".  I didn't know there was a pre-solo-Todd version of this.  Niiiiice!

I really prefer Todd's solo take on Hello, It's Me.  This drags too much.

indeed, I think I prefer it to the poppier solo version. But The Isley Bros take remains my fave.

Sounds like it was recorded with the Beach Boys in mind. Unquestionable BOS--can't wait to hear what she has to top this.

speaking of languid, "white" orig versions of songs later covered soulfully (Jr Walker's version of "These Eyes" is another fave).

er, what?

and as predicted, "Hot Fun..." Can't really complain, this has been fab so far. As long as we avoid the multiple requests for "Na Na Hey Hey"...

I never liked this one.  Both Doug's voice and the organ grate on my for some reason.

What did they do to Bob's voice to make him sound like that?  There's something about this era of Bob that's just odd.  "Lay Lady Lay" has got it too.  Maybe some reverb where there was none before?

BOS and ntm.

Bob was fun last night at the Fox, though, seriously, I couldn't understand a single word he sang.  Hard to believe someone with as little voice as he had could lose it so completely.  Still, well worth it.

it's his "crooner" voice. I'm always amazed when people think it's odd. It's just a different shade of Bob.

OMFG! Christine Perfect & Co, "I'd Rather Go Blind" uber-BOS7 and proxy of Geoff, I'm sure.

ETA: Ms Perfect followed by the band she'd later join. Oh, well...

Whoa! I was just listening the Faces' version of this last week, but I've never heard this version. I thought FMac at first too, but realized she wasn't in the band in '69.

Oh Well....

ETA: Per AMG, I'd Rather Go Blind was credited to Chicken Shack.

Compared to her usual sets, which tend to include a couple of loud rockers, this was fairly mellow. I think the idea was that the weather made it too hot to rock.

Haha, I was right there with you.  A wealth of riches in this set; BOSFRA to "I'd Rather Go Blind," which I likewise initially mistook for "I Shall Be Released."  Co-BOS otherwise to the Turtles (thanks, Mike) and Jr. Walker's tamborrific minimalism (no chorus and a mere two verses between those instro interludes).
