Title: 25 June 2010: the Pride Set
Post by: RGMike on June 23, 2010, 01:21:46 PM
it's official -- there's a blurb on the KFOG websiite promoting it.  I have a number of "suggestions" for AL.

and here's last year's set for easy reference:

Quote
1.  Sylvester - You Make Me Feel Mighty Real
(Movie:  Milk)
   2.  Carl Bean - I Was Born This Way
(TV:  Queer As Folk)
   3.  Melissa Etheridge - Yes, I Am
(TV:  Queer As Folk)
   4.  Timbuk 3 - Legalize Our Love
(TV:  Seinfeld)
   5.  Pansy Division - That's So Gay!
(News:  Rob Halford comes out)
   6.  Judas Priest - Hell Bent For Leather
(Movie:  Opposite of Sex)
   7.  Ani DiFranco - In or Out
(Movie:  Transamerica)
   8.  Polyphonic Spree - Wig in a Box
(News:  UPI on the street)
   9.  The Smiths - How Soon is Now?
 10.  Blur - Girls & Boys

BONUS: Pet Shop Boys - Go West

I'm gonna predict she plays Scissor Sisters' "Take Your Mama."

And I'd like Tom Robinson's "Glad to Be Gay" to return to the set.

went to FB to request Carl Bean's "I Was Born This Way" and saw that she posted the clip as (I'm assuming) a pre-emptive "extra".  I suggested

Billy Bragg, "Sexuality"
Gloria Gaynor "I Am What I Am"
Pete Shelley, "Homosapien"
Bronski Beat, "Smalltown Boy"

Yes -- terrific, not just for his story but as a portrait of SF in that period.

Sorry, I'm just still seething over the treatment of my old friend in Loveland, Ohio.

BOS to the PSB's superior cover of "Go West."  I wish this had been the single from Very instead of "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Type of Thing."

a "Sexuality" twin-spin with the Billy Bragg song, perhaps?

Btw, the KFOG web page has just one slide on the front door right now, promoting Pride and this set. I'll be curious if it stays up the rest of the day or not.

Ooooh, here's one with a nod and a wink: Priest, Livin' After Midnight.

My brother was devastated when Rob Halford came out.  He still thinks all gays should be Jack MacFarland for easy identification (and, presumably, avoidance).

Agreed, but I think the Original Cast recording from the Off-Broadway show is the definitive version.

There's one song on it that's not in the movie (Random Number Generation) but there's also a couple in the movie that weren't in the play.

Kind of like Tom Waits is an acquired taste. One of the unenjoyable performances I have seen. Same as Rush. Just doesn't work for me.

I saw him on the Elvis Costello show on Sundance -- he was quite interesting but he's the gayest non-dragqueen I've ever seen.

Thought I'd post this here -- would've made a nice addition to the set. The Dixie Chicks side-project, CourtYard Hounds, have this song on their new CD about a gay kid rejected by his judgemental father:

http://www.shewired.com/Article.cfm?ID=24712

Quote
I've got somethin' to say
I'm scared and so afraid
Can you take me as I am?
Come what may, our blood is all the same
I am still your little man

He said...
You ain't no son to me
You ain't no son to me
8 lb. baby boy I bounced on my knee
No, you ain't no son of mine
You ain't no son of mine
Ah, forget it girls
There ain't no use in tryin'
Don't expect to get my love for free
And don't blame me

You know this ain't no fun for me
This ain't no fun for me
All boys should be boys
That's how it should be
Yeah, you ain't comin' home
Nah, you ain't comin' home
'Til you walk a straight line
You'll be out on your own

Don't expect to save your soul for free
When you're the one who turned your back on me

Aren't you a sight to see?
Yeah, you're a sight to see
What you call freedom
Makes you look like a freak
Yeah, you must get around
'Cause it sure got around
Don't you know that I can't show my face in this town?

Don't think I'm gonna get you up off your knees
When you're the one who turned your back on me

Stranger, stranger on the wall
When the neighbors come to call
I just don't know what to say
So I put you away
This time I won't leave a trace
I'll fill up the empty space
When I put you, I put you away
