Our first visit since the end of March--time do fly!
Amazing. Hoping for something pop-heavy. My FB requests: "Arizona", "Candida" and "Heaven Help Us All"

I took her intimation on FB to be 75 since all mentioned events were mid-decade. I think I'll miss the set. Traveling to Wisconsin for work. I hope not to be awake at midnight there. Best part of the trip will be that Tuesday is a free night and the Cubs are in town playing the Brewers. I have a ticket and will be checking out Miller Park!
I miss all of you. Wish I could check in here more often.

I will absolutely imbibe and enjoy the local offerings. Hopefully checking out Coors Field in August. Not too excited about drinking Coors! Trip July 31 for a week. The Giants are playing the Rockies on the 3rd I think and my hotel is ONE mile from the ballpark.

So after registering a handful of suggestions for tomorrow's '70 set, I realize tonight that I have a 10am meeting in Portland for a new farmers' market that starts in 2 weeks, so I'm gonna miss the initial broadcast. Hope it turns out well for y'all (how could it not--'70 is such a superlative year for pop singles) and be sure to shout out if any of mine show up. Here's what I asked for:
Ray Price-For the Good Times
The Delfonics-Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)
Barbra Streisand-Stoney End
Aretha's cover of Border Song
the Flaming Embers- Westbound #9.
-
So after registering a handful of suggestions for tomorrow's '70 set...,
Barbra Streisand-Stoney End
Ha! I thought of Babs too -- an all-time-fave of mine. But I associate it with '71 (it peaked, chartwise, in Feb) so I decided to hold off until that year. But if it comes up I won't complain.

Ya think she keeps her band of gold in her little green bag?

Unconsummated in her marriage.

She should have suspected something when the honeymoon suite had two bedrooms.

After Holland/Dozier/Holland left Motown in 1967, they were still in contact with Motown's house band, The Funk Brothers. Holland/Dozier/Holland started their own label, with the intention of self-producing the songs they would write, and they asked The Funk Brothers to play the instrumentals on those songs. The Funk Brothers who played on the Freda Payne recording of "Band of Gold" include:
Bass: Bob Babbitt
Guitarists: Dennis Coffey, Eddie Willis, and Ray Monette
Keyboards: Johnny Griffth
Drums: Uriel Jones
Percussion: Jack Ashford

Wow, interesting - I'm surprised Motown didn't (try to) forbid that.
-
BOS of course to the Dead!

How was he? He sucked at the Masonic years ago. Faced the band most of the time.

Blondie Chaplin? Hmm, dunno. Good question. I would've guessed Carl.

Yeah, that's who I meant. But you are right. It's Carl. Full marks!

"New Speedway Boogie" is one of the few songs by the Dead literally written about something in particular, Altamont.

Saw him open for the Stones at Oakland a couple years ago. He was good, faced the crowd, did many hits, played a mean sax!

In the Maysles Bros' Gimme Shelter movie, you see the Dead arrive at the Speedway, then they get work of the security shenanigans and hear about Marty Balin getting clocked in the face, and they do an about face. Smart career move.
another BOS to Steve Miller

goin' to the Country Comfort! BOS3 EJ.
Maybe Elton was providing some comfort for Steve out in the country...
I wonder if Elton ever cringes when he sings what Bernie wrote (or wrought):
Now the old fat goose is flying cross the sticks
The hedgehog's done in clay between the bricks
And the rocking chair's creaking on the porch
Across the valley moves the herdsman with his torch
Eek.

TANC: A couple of days ago a FB friend posted this clip, likely an outtake from Gimme Shelter, of the Dead and the Stones standing around on a pier somewhere on the Embarcadero waiting for a helicopter to take them to Altamont. Pretty interesting.

My sisters would quote the Bananarama version as "I'm your penis, I'm your fire". More or less to piss of my parents. Of course they would also sing "Gatorade is piss aid, for that deep down body piss".
