Title: 26 January 2010: it's 1989
Post by: urth on January 26, 2010, 10:04:55 AM
That's what I'm guessing from the Alarm tune that's leading off anyway--Sold Me Down the River. Can't stay though--got a meeting at 10:30. Here's hoping AL pulls out something better than what we've come to expect from past sets.

yup, we're being sold down the '89 river. I'm astounded to see that our last trip to 1989 was a Morey calssic in October (!) Is that really possible?  Anyway, here's hoping AL makes this dreadful year tolerable. "Seize the day" indeed.

Ooops, spoke too soon -- here's The Call with an uber-Moreytrina.

It's raining and I rode my bike to work today.  I feel like I "Rolled Me Down A River" --

har har   :'(

WOS just because of the watery lyrics.

Nope.  The Call gets WOS from me.  I can't stand 'em.  Both this and the Alarm tune were Moreytrinas of the highest order.

BOS Mike/Mechanics. Truly lovely, after all these years it still gets me a bit choked up. Honest sentiment, as opposed to sap. Rare in a pop hit.

methinks that's actually 1990, but I've no desire to hear it either way.

and the board is again painfully slow.

I know a lot of people who are suckers for this M+tM song.  I'm not one of them.  WOS3.

Jeff Healy gets a WOS from me.

Mike & the Mechanics...hmm.  Love the lyrics, love the music.  But they don't go together quite so well.  It ends up sounding cornball, esp. with the children singing the chorus.  Still, I agree he means well.  Worth a VHM.

Me too, my relationship with my own dad was like that the first half of my life, but it's been great for years now.

Sledgehammer for the Tian An Men massacre clip.  In '94 I made my first trip to China & we met a woman whose brother was killed there.  No explanation given to the family - just told to pick up the body from the police station.

BOS the Cure!

ETA: I saw them live that year, and it was backstage that their new keyboard player dished on the P-Furs as being "talentless wankers" on a live over the air mike.  Somebody asked about that last week.

BOS to Neil Young!  This is SO much better than the watered down acoustic version, which radio stations seem to play 99% of the time.  (The only other time I've heard the real version is on an alt. station in San Diego!)

and BOS2 to the Cure...my favorite song by them.

Every generation
blames the one before

the first lines of this song remind me of when I overheard a young couple at a restaurant talking about politics. They were very fired up about the upcoming Presidential election and I heard one say "It's up to US to fix this thing.  The generation before us didn't do it..."

it's Orinoco Flacco!

This is a pretty Flacco set, I'd have to say.  I couldn't stand most of this stuff in the 80's, and I'm still not fond of most of it.  I do have an appreciation for the Cure now, though they were near the top of my list of whiny white boy music that I couldn't tolerate.

BOS #4, B-52's "Deadbeat Club".  Half for not being "Roam" and half for the nifty harmony on the refrain.

as per usual, AL started weak and finished fairly strong, but this set really needed some pure Top 40 stuff (any of the things I mentioned earlier woulda pushed this one over the top for me).

Well, I liked Orinoco flow, because it made us think of our trip to Berlin, where we first heard it.  I also flash to a funeral I attended for someone my age at the time, who was a father to friends of our daughters.  I hear "The Living Years" on the way home.  Corny, yes.  But for that kind of occasion...

1/26/10 - Tuesday!  A bit of time in...1989!!
   1.  The Alarm - Sold Me Down the River
(Movie:  Dead Poet's Society)
   2.  The Call - Let the Day Begin
   3.  The Replacements - Achin' to Be
(Ad:  Magic Dancing Barbie)
   4.  Jeff Healey Band - Angel Eyes
   5.  Mike & the Mechanics - The Living Years
(News:  Tiananmen Square)
   6.  Neil Young - Rockin in the Free World (BOS!)
   7.  The Cure - Fascination Street
(Sports:  49ers win the Super Bowl!
   8.  Pure - Lightning Seeds
   9.  Enya - Orinoco Flow
(TV:  Murphy Brown)
 10.  B52's - Deadbeat Club
BONUS TRACK:  The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues

BOS Enya
WOS Alarm (all too typical of Moreyesque late 80's sets)

Would love to hear on 10@10 but probably won't: Bust A Move (Young MC), with honorable mention to Roachford's "Cuddly Toy"

I was just thinking about this song the other day.  "If I told ya THREE times, I told ya FIVE times ..."

heard the last half of the replay on saturday morning driving with the family.  My son Adrian asked me to turn it up when Fascination Street started in.  Christina asked why, and he said he thought it sounded cool and that some day when he learns to play guitar he would like to learn to play like Robert Smith.
