Title: 5 Jan 2010: 1987
Post by: RGMike on January 05, 2010, 10:03:31 AM
one of the worst years on the wheel in the Morey era; make it different, AL!

ETA: Pink Floyd is not an auspicious start...

WOS "Learning to Fly."  Not a bad song, but an awful choice as TOTHK.

A far better selection for Tune #2: my favorite Depeche Mode song, "Never Let Me Down Again."

Lots of good forgotten pop and R&B in '87 that Dave always ignored. I'd LURVE to hear "Talk Dirty To Me" by Poison.  Or some Samantha Fox. And PLEASE -- no Grateful Dead.

i was wondering what that movie clip was. Wings Of Desire - I recall liking the movie, but I think it might seem dated and pretentious if I saw it again.

still better than the Nic Cage/Meg Ryan remake/"reimagining" called City of Angels. Nic is no Bruno Ganz.

"I Want Your (Hands On Me)" debuted in May 1988 on (MTV's 12O Minutes), featuring a rap interlude by MC Lyte. This song was featured in the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.

It was common for rap-song collabs 1987-91 to have both rap and rap-free versions, since some adult pop stations outright banned rap.  I remember that happening with Maxi Priest's #1 hit "Close to You."

I'm sure I mentioned this before, but it bears repeating in this context.  Back when Dennis Miller had his brief stint on MNF, ESPN ran a Tuesday column annotating his various obscure references.  One time Miller name dropped John Facenda, from all those great NFL Films features (he was the one who gave us "the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field").  The annotation explained this and closed with the quip: ...and thus Facenda earned the nickname 'the Voice of God'.  God, however, thinks He sounds like Gregory Peck.

If Dave did, it predates the Db.  And the Db is not up to date for Annalisa's tenure, but you might be right.

BOS's to Depeche Mode, John Hiatt, and Sinead.  VHM to Echo & the Bunnymen and U2.

& holy crap, that Beastie Boys song annoys the hell out of me but I had no idea it was from 1987.  I would have guessed mid-90s.  For being that kind of a song, it does seem quite a bit ahead of its time now, so no WOS for today.
