I wasn't sure either. Sorta prog-jazzish, but definitely of the 70s. I think this might be a lifetime bustout for me--I don't believe I've ever heard this.

Nice to hear John Sebastian's "Welcome Back".  And Gary Wright qualifies as most 70's of set, though "Dream Weaver" sure is played out.  Even so, it was fun to hear him sing it with Ringo's All-Starr Band last summer.

the only other song that I remember hearing in NY was "Travelin' Shoes" from '74, but it probably wouldn't fly these days -- rather cartoonishly/violently misogynistic.

I was thinking that too -- my love for it is well-known -- but it was a country crossover, and if TC meant pop/rock songs that are not primarily country tunes, it may not count.

Well, I wouldn't nominate a song like Eric Weissburg's Deuling Banjos simply because it's an obvious choice and not the slightest bit rock. But I think Misty would qualify--it may have crossed over, but it made it to #14 on the Hot 100. Besides, he didn't specify any rules--yet. ;)

A number of Niel Young tracks would qualify, though I can't name one at the moment.  Of course, that's basically country crossover too.  "Just A Song" off of Dave Mason's Alone Together would work, cool banjo noodling behind the chorus.

ah yes, rules.  I was thinking non-country songs that pass the aesthetic test of this board, heh... :)

Would that allow Tony Orlando and Dawn in? I believe Yellow Ribbon has banjo -- and maybe some of their other old timey tunes do, too.  some here are fans, some prob not.

From Wiki on "Tom Dooley":

The Kingston Trio, Capitol, 1958. This recording sold in excess of six million copies, topping the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and is often credited with starting the "folk boom" of the late 1950s and 1960s. It only had three verses (and the chorus four times).

Aaackkk!  that's the other one that I was desperately tryign to recall, and failing to do so convinced me I was suffering from brain freeze.  I was tantalizingly close to remembering it, and knew there was a great Zep tune in that category.  But all I could come up with was "When the Levee Breaks", which may also qualify, but I knew it wasn't the one I was failing to remember.

here's another banjo tune:  Robert Plant & Alison Krauss' version of Black Dog:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poiCzMOvkKk

They opened their shows with this T-Bone Burnett arrangement.

so we do have a variety of tunes, and although I'm not familiar with the Eagles suggestions, it looks like featuring a banjo in a song generall means it will on the kinder and gentler side... unless we open the voting up to include some bluegrass-y stuff!  :)

I think some widely known country/bluegrass tunes would go well here: Foggy Mountain Breakdown for instance (and I hope to hear the legendary Earl Skruggs play it this weekend!).   And what about Dueling Banjos?  Everyone knows that, but not everyone's a fan ... eh, Gaz?
