I'm guessing some of you got the Foghead e-mail. AL is doing an all Carlos Santana set to celebrate Santana's 62nd birthday on Monday, July 20th. AL is taking requests.

Over/Under on "Smooth"? Honestly, I don't share the hate for it.

I'd give it 2 to 1. But I'd rather get one of the tunes from his follow-up album, Shaman: either "Love of My Life" (with Musiq Soulchild) or "You Are My Kind" (with Seal).

I thought Smooth was overplayed.

No doubt this song was overplayed, although it was much worse on Hot AC stations (25 weeks at #1 there, a record for any chart which I believe still stands). The question I have regarding it is whether people dislike it as a function of it being overplayed, or just don't care for the song to begin with.

I am going to request that, if she plays "Black Magic Woman", please give us a twin spin and lead into it with instrumental "Singing Winds, Crying Beasts", just like on Abraxas.
I'm off to have meetings all morning, enjoy the rest of your day & the weekend everybody!

overplayed for me, though I don't like Rob Thomas' voice that much, something I've discovered after hearing Smoove so much... :)

and that matchbox twenty song that sounded just like "Smooth" didn't help matters...

Thomas' then-wife sure looked good.

For me, it's mostly that it was overplayed. While not horrible, I only thought it was mildly annoying the first time I heard it (which was on Open House Party, when John Garabedian introduced it as "new hot summer music" -- I thought that description didn't quite fit as he usually described new dance songs as that), but I would have been very willing & able to forget. Unfortunately the Hot AC stations made sure that didn't happen.

So if AL plays "Oye Como Va", will Morgan Freeman do the backannounce?
-
"Soul Sacrifice" to start.
-
Jingo!
-
Jingo!
"Jingo" and "Soul Sac" are a tad too similar to play back-to-back, IMHO.

Soul Sacrifice has the Woodstock mojo, and Jingo is the killer from the 1st album.
"Totally different head!"

I hope we get to hear "Chill Out" with JLH.

Nice to see you again! I thought it was a fun song, but dreadfully overplayed (to chime in with the chorus). Much better than "Maria, Maria".
-
KFOG player says Europa; I get many of these arching beautiful songs confused!
-
and now a little Peter Green tune!
-
Got a Black Magic 'Trina.

Here's John Lee Hooker for ya
-
Sorry, but the interview clips of Carlos are tedious -- I have a very low threshold for mystical bullshit.

I first saw Santana at Rob Gym, UCSB, I think December 1968, Quicksilver headlining. Their first album had not come out yet. I think they played again in early '69. Over the years I've seen them a bunch, mainly at Dead shows. Caught him sitting in with Eric Clapton at Frost for that song from Tommy.
His band used to rehearse next door on Folsom St. to my shop, so I've heard him through the walls more times than I can count, met many different band members, as they always seemed to be quitting and returning. Worked with at least 3 of his bass players on basses.
Got to hand it to him, long career making music. Not a bad fate, eh?
-
BOS this song from Caravansary, whatever it's called!

called up to BOS, and asked title, she said "Song of the Wind," and thanked me!

The guitar helps.

BOS for "Everybody's Everything", one of my all-time favorite songs by any artist. But I always wondered, does everything belong to everybody, or is everybody everything?

this is all sounding pretty good fo rmy Monday, and I like all the interview clips. Carlos sure is an interestingly spiritual guy.

It's All Too Much!

considering the song is ripped off from an earlier hit by an obscure group, I guess Carlos believes the former. ;)
-
BOS for "Dance, Sister Dance".
-
Dance Sister Dance
it would be nice to see a family tree of all the musicians who have occupied the different musical chairs in his bands over the years.

I'm trying to track it down -- JJ has played it on KPOO and I can't remember the name, but it's from the late '60s and I was gobsmacked the first time I heard it.

this end part of Dance Sister makes me think of a skating rink!

where would be Santana be without cover songs?
:) :)

This is the song I always confuse with Europa, 'Samba Pa Ti' I think. BOS 2 or 3

It's "Karate" released in 1967 by The Emperors:

actually, I think one of the Emperors collaborated on "EE".
-
Damn, this is a long set!
and here's "Smooth" to make it even longer...
-
I'm not counting, but are we to assume Smooth is #10? Is this what Santana will be capsulized for?
-
oh well, this too shall pass.

for better or worse -- certainly this was one of the biggest-selling "comeback" albums ever.

Better that than his French kissing skills.

Too bad about "Smooth", even though I did think it was pretty good when it came out. And he does steal the riff from the Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane", doncha think?

so of course it was one of the biggest request-getters. Fogheads drool!

Which they probably stole from the Emperors. :)
-
Big bad buffering made me miss the entire backsell.
-
Wow, I just listened to "Karate", and it sure is the same as "Everybody's Everything". Not nearly as good, but definitely the same. I hope they were duly credited. And they say "Karate" where "Get ready" appears in the Santana tune.

True - Carlos must have one of the lowest interview/talent quality ratios in the biz. I wonder who is amongst the highest (great interview, crappy artist). I'll nominate Shaq.
-
I notice the two sets dedicated to rock legends since AL took over were for two musicians that currently live in the Bay Area, Carlos and Neil Young. KFOG wants to make sure these two guys know the local station "has their back," I'd say. that's how local radio should work -- focus on "locals" -- but I see good business behind it, too. I mean, these guys certainly deserve dedicated sets to honor them, but if if KFOG had to decide b/w a living legend who is local vs a living legend who lives in, say, England, I think they'll go w the one who might just feel like stopping into the station one day.
I'm back east right now, and 107.7 The Lake (out of Buffalo) did mentioned Carlos' bday, too, but just in passing it seemed, and they didn't play any of his tunes -- just then, anyway.
also, next month is the 40th anniversary of Woodstock!!!

It'll be interesting to see what KFOG does. I was surprised they devoted the Morning Show to the moon landing on Monday to the extent they did. They can never seem to decide what demo they're going after, but lately the pendulum has once again swung in the direction of us older folks, it seems.

For their annual Latino Heritage Night (8/25/09), los Gigantes are giving away a Carlos bobblehead!

that's a cool bobblehead, but you might need a special ticket to get that premium. better check the fine print on the sked if you're interested.
