KPOO's Marilynn is off today, so we're getting some of her "greatest hits". Highlight: Les McCann/Eddie Harris "Compared to What?"
"Possession is the motivation
that is hangin' up the God-damn nation!"
and now Ella's on the A-train.
-
Lawdhavemercy! "Mississippi God-DAMN!"
-
Listening to the UK replay of Little Steven -- he's into his semi-annual Joe Meek tribute. Backward toilet-flushing is so cool!
-
Steven's "Coolest Song in the World" this week: the latest from the Cocktail Slippers, "You Do Run Run", Spectorian reference intentional.

and continuing the girl-group theme, Steven plays "My One and Only Jimmy Boy", a lost nugget by the Girlfriends (2 Blossoms and an Ikette, sez Steven), which shoulda been a much bigger hit. Written and produced by... David Gates!

Over to KPOO for some of Judge's Monday merriment. "Hey There Little Firefly" by, er, Firefly.
Followed by smooth Smokey, creating an entire radio format with "Quiet Storm" (if only he'd known!)
-

more from the Dept of Redundancy Dept: the Soul Train Gang doing the rather monotonous "Soul Train '75".
-
Judge is doing an extended salute to the Sylvers -- "Cotton Candy", which missed the pop Top 40, is NTM.

We're getting some Sylvers ballads that are also NTM -- and very similar to what DeBarge would be doing a few years later.

dangit, for some reason I can't get KPOO online here at the saltmine. makes me shout "Pooh, Kay?"

If memory serves, that was a pre-fame Kenny Nolan behind that.

You are correct sir! It was also done by Disco Texx (which i didn't know!) but the Firefly version is the one I remember. Thought of as a "disco song" but really more in the "Soulful Strut" vein.

Bob Shannon is doing a salute to Carolina Beach Music -- here's a pre-"Lion Sleeps Tonite" Robert John with "If You Don't Want My Love"!

Is that the same Robert John that did Sad Eyes over on The Sound earlier this morning? Always wondered if they were one and the same.

Yup -- hence the TANC!

I'm unclear on the parameters/attributes of "Carolina Beach Music" - can you give me a primer on the genre?

it's any song you can do The Shag to (the Shag being a dance, no relation to any Austin Powers reference). Mostly soul, but white artists have had CBM hits too.

WLNG juxtaposition of the week: creepy Gary Puckett turns some poor girl into a woman; Darlene Love replies "He's Sure the Boy I Love".
-
If KPOO's Thursday morning soul guy wants me to stay -- he'll play some Sly.
-
ooo!, the Contours, "Just a Little Misunderstanding" -- another Motown obscurity that sounds like it was written for Levi Stubbs. Geils shoulda covered this one.
-
JB's been 'buked, and he been scorned. And he had a hard time finding black kids in the suburbs of LA to sing "Say it Loud".
LAWD -- it's the looooong (i.e., parts 1 & 2) version!
-
And you thought those Billy Mays commercials still running are creepy: KPOO just played a PSA about glaucoma prevention featuring... Ray Charles. The DJ said "obviously recorded in heaven". LOL!
-
King Curtis' "Soul Serenade" is making me want to blow off AL and stick with KPOO. If her "mystery year" is a '90s thang (which I suspect is the case) I will do just that.
-
Wow! Magic 98, doin' their Saturday '70s thang, plays Carole King's "Believe in Humanity" -- I can't remember the last time I heard this.

Several months ago I wanted to do a blog entry on this song, but it wasn't anywhere on YouTube. Good thing - the entry would have been me at my most bitter. The song's up now, but thankfully the mood has passed. (In sum: I was going to tell Carole why she shouldn't. I should never tell anyone that.)
