one of the SF sets is on tap. I half-expected one of those old shameless-self-promotional "kaboom" sets.
-
There are four possibilities for this one. #1 and #4 would be the most preferable.
ETA: Yay! This would be number 4! Originally aired 4/12/07.
-
very nice beginning w Blue Cheer.
did you guys ever read Joel Selvin's "Top 100 bay Area Bands" feature he did back in 99?

Dave said that was the Charlatans. BOS for Green Day's "Longview", despite it being the clean version.

Yeah, so who's the Charlatan now?? :)
oops, thanks for the correx
-
BOS Green Day, they're f--in' lazy. or crazy. or both. Where is my motivation?

Charlatans, actually. Featuring a young Dan Hicks and future Flamin' Groovie Mike Wilhelm, iirc.
-
BOS2 the Pointer Brothers, er, Doobie Sisters, er...
-
BOS3 li'l Stevie "Guitar" Miller, splittin' for Mexico.
-
BOS2 Stevie 'Guitar' Miller, Goin' To Mexico.
There's a couple songs in this set that only appear once in the DB, and several others that are just two-timers. A good choice by whoever pulled this one out.
-
Crankin' up the speakers for the Boz Scaggs Big Band, the superlative Runnin' Blue. Overall BOS, hands down.
-
BOS2 Stevie 'Guitar' Miller, Goin' To Mexico.
"guitar" JINX! BOS4 and proxy-of-geoff, Boz.
-
uber-BOS5 DKs, "Holiday In Cambodia"!
-
Now you can go where people are one
Now you can go where they get things done
another BOS to the DKs
-

where people dress in black -- and so does their rice!

Pol...POT...Pol...POT!!!
Another BOS vote for the Kennedys, and while we're at it, another for Journey Before They'd Even HEARD Of Steve Perry, Of A Lifetime.
Hey Tink, is that a young Clint Howard as your avatar there? And is he drinking a martini?

Excellent obscure Trek avatar, Tink!

Journey Before They'd Even HEARD Of Steve Perry, Of A Lifetime.
iirc, this won the Foghead BOS.

It did in its only other appearance, but surprisingly, in this set it was Runnin' Blue. Which is just fine by me.

Yes, it's Clint as "Balok" in a Star Trek ep called "The Carbomite Maneuvre." He's drinkning "tranya."
"This is tranya. I hope you relish it as much as I."
- Balok
Tranya
Tranya was an orange to pink-colored beverage originating from the First Federation, usually served very cold. It was first discovered by the Federation in 2266, when Balok served it to officers of the USS Enterprise. (TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver")
Tranya would later be a major export of the First Federation. Curzon Dax was particularly fond of the drink, and it was stocked in Quark's on Deep Space 9. (DS9: "Facets")
The tranya that Balok served the crew was, in fact, grapefruit juice, which young Clint Howard absolutely hated. He said in an interview that he had to work very hard at making it look like he actually liked it. "The Comedy Central Roast of William Shatner" implies that tranya can be an addictive beverage and that Balok had developed a bit of a drinking problem. However, this is obviously not canonical.

Check it out: I have the action figures from this episode. I'm not a trekkie, but when I saw the reissue at a Toys 'R' Us clearance bin (for like $5) I snagged it. Score!

BOS7 "San Jose's own", well, you know.

You weren't wrong. They wrote and recorded it, but it didn't chart here. People! had the US hit.

Go have a couple belts of tranya--you'll feel a lot better.
-
suddenly! from the rear! Sylvester! er... no comment.

5/8/09 - FRIDAY!!!!! Marking time with the San Francisco Sound!!
Today of all days you can expect that they'll take every possible opportunity to flog Ka-boom. Particularly since it hasn't sold out. Didn't past years (since they started charging anyway) sell out in advance?

I think the first year they charged it sold out (or came close) but each year they've charged more (and sold less)

Got to hear tunes 5-9, or parts thereof, in the car on the way to a meeting. Have to catch the whole thing tomorrow. Actually looking forward to the marathon, since this week the only set I heard in its entirety was Monday's.

This has (IMHO) been one of the better weeks of "classics" we've had since Dave's departure.
