Title: 23 April 2009: Fear of a '90s Set (nope, 1982)
Post by: RGMike on April 23, 2009, 09:52:33 AM
Methinks we're due for one...

But I'm happy to be wrong.  Haircut 100 TOTHK.

Perhaps they're saving it for tomorrow? In the meantime, today we get 82 and Love Plus One.

Hmm. Once again we have two sets in the DB that start with today's TOTHK. But this time one is markedly better than the other. Here's hoping we're revisiting October 5, 2006. 2003 was way worse.

ETA: CHA-CHING!!! 2006 it is. Here's what we would have heard in the less acceptable set:

1. Haircut 100:   Love Plus One
2. Human League:   Don't You Want Me
3. Fixx:   Stand Or Fall
4. Jon Anderson:   All In A Matter Of Time
5. Talk Talk:   Talk Talk
6. Loverboy   :      Workin' For The Weekend
7. Men At Work:   Who Can It Be Now?
8. Donald Fagen:   The Nightfly
9. Asia:   Only Time Will Tell
10. Missing Persons:   Destination Unknown

Major katrinafest there.

Not quite--it debuted in January of 06; this was its second and final appearance until today.

And we have one other duplication with the March 03 set yet to come that will be just as painful, I'm afraid.

Did Mark Mothersbaugh do that one?

BOS4 Paul Carrack.

Sorry, catchy tune, but... (and I know Gaz is with me on this one)...among The. Dumbest. Lyrics in a half-decade LOADED with 'em.

Don't need a Roller
Or a Limousine
I don't need my picture
In a magazine
Don't need approval
From a chosen few
I tell you what I do need
I need you.

Don't need no fixtures
Or feelings of home
I'm so unfurnished
I'm on my own
Don't need reminding
When the rent is due
Tell you what I do need
I need you

I need you
Like a fly needs a plane
I need you
Like a ball needs a game
I need you
Like a pool needs a cue
I need you, need you, need you
I need you

I don't need no covered kisses
To comfort me
I don't want no washed up dishes
Soft soaping me (WTF!?)
Don't need no cinderella
In high heeled shoes  (I believe they were glass, not high-heeled)
I tell you what I do need
I need you

da da da da
da da da da
da da da da da da da da
ooh lala la la
I need you

I need you
Like a fly needs a plane  (redux)
I need you
Like a ball needs a game
I need you
Like a shot needs to shoot  (lots of items shoot shot, but not the other way around, afaik)
I need you, need you, need you
I need you

I need you, need you, need you
I need you

Said I want you
I need you

I need you, need you, need you
I need you

Well I want
I want you
I need you

Novelty song lyrics married to blue-eyed soul just does not work for me.

Damn clever wordplay, IMHO. Elvis Costello (or George Jones) would be proud.

P.S. I defy you, Mike(!), to find dumber lyrics in any Rush song.

"Willfully obscure" I grant you.  No question.  But out & out Dumb?  This sets the bar.

I'll have to take your word on George Jones, but I think Elvis never made similes that called into question whether or not* (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_As_She_Is_Spoke) he was a native speaker of English like these lyrics do.

*if y'all have not previously encountered the unintended genius of English As She Is Spoke, please click on the link above.  Don't take my word for it, take Mark Twain's.

I agree!  I thought for short while about which Rush songs might qualify as dumb lyric examples.  I suppose if you are creating a complete world containing relic guitars from ancient history and priests who oversee the Temples of Syrinx, you're either dumb by definition or The.
