given the pattern of the week, I'm guessing either '60s or a theme set; we haven't had a "classic" VT since Dave left. Maybe instrumentals? or the cowbell set again (that would be an unwelcome TANC).
ETA: I'm so happy it's '67 -- I ain't fakin' it! (BOS S&G)
-
OMFG! I am shocked at something done this right. 10-way BOS, no doubt, but nice to get that loosey opening to "Fakin' It" as TOTHK.
-
Based on the TotHK, this is either the first or one of the last '67 set in the DB. If the latter it is also an "On This Date" set.
Can't begin to say how pleased I am, makes up almost entirely for not having been able to request smething from Dave personally.
-
lawd! Dave's all-time-favorite single lifts us ALL higher.

Mike was too quick on the draw for me to have a jinx on H&H.

It is the latter. A very soulful set, and a major rarity at Super Hit 6.

Happy birthday!!!!!!! Great set. When the heck is Dave coming back? Ever?
-
OMG! Carla gives Otis some serious wood to, er, knock on. Yeah, this is a def 10-way-tie set.
-
I don't think I've heard this version of "Knock on Wood". Is this Otis and Carla? Or Wilson and someone else?
ETA: She said Otis, and I believer her.
ETAA: And Happy Birthday, Mark!
-
"(I Wanna) Testify" was me a month or two ago.
-
I really DO wanna testify: one of Dave's best sets evah. S&G the sole white folks so far
-
Testifyin to the greatness of the set. Neil on deck me thinks.

Dude, if you're referring to 8/31/2007 and 8/18/2000, I just noticed--they have identical setlists.
But either way it's a GREAT set. Lovin' hearing Otis and Carla. Just caught a great PBS pledge week special that featured a Stax/Volt revue filmed in Oslo Norway in '67. No Carla, but Otis ruled the stage.
-
Not sure I know the Arrows Blues Theme. Must have missed this set the first time around.

you'll recognize it -- it's been in Instrumental sets.
Thank da LAWD fo' Neil!

Gues what, on looking at the Db again, it was the same set both times - i.e. the aug 18, 2000 set was repeated on Aug 31, 2007. The first time around it wasn't noted as an OTD set, and the second time it wasn't noted as a classic. Must have been a Live & Local month.
ETA: I see Urth tumbled to this before I did.

If you've ever listened Little Steven's Underground Garage, you've heard it. It's his theme music.
-
Anybody else think "R-O-C-K in the USA" maybe lifted a bit of this Neil Diamond song?

I was gonna say "an all-black show for an all-white audience", but i guess Steve Cropper was on stage somewhere...

indeed -- I was surprised that didn't make it into the "Top Rip-offs" list (they had JCM ripping John Caffery).
and here's Davie Allan -- aka Little Steven's closing music each week. "Go back ta Joisey, ya moron!"
ETA: Little Steven JINX! and very special mention to the fab "true stereo" on the Beatles tune.

No more than ITTLFTNT lifted from "Cherry Cherry."

speaking of "true stereo"! Psychedelic Psupes!
-
Love that percolating drip-drip-drip opening to "Reflections." The relentless tambourine, too.
-
This set is making me "peer thru the window of lost time", alright.

Great song!
someone gave me a cassette containing some tuned recorded off WNYU's Plastic Tales from the Marshmallow Dimension show, and this tune was on it. Plastic Tales is awesome, a psyche and garage show -- which they might still air...?
-
I think we all know Mike Love's role in "Heroes and Villains."

Nope. Don't know of which you speak. Please elucidate.

Jinx!
(Elucidation: Love's an asshole. And he was specifically critical of this album's ambition.)

Damn good set! And FAST!
(apologies to Kyle MacLachlan, but then that's a pretty obscure reference)

Close. Duck Dunn was up there too--pre-beard and pipe days.
You're mostly right about the audience, but I was surprised to see a few dark faces in the crowd. US servicemen, I'm guessing.

Watched Wattstax (http://www.wattstax.com/dvd.html) the other night, if you haven't seen it, do! the music is pretty good, of course -- although i wanted to hear more of everyone -- but the interviews, the footage from 1972 is fantabulous!
eta: The Wattstax concert, staged in LA Coliseum in 1972 to commemorate the 1965 LA riots, was an all-back show for a mostly all-black audience featuring Stax artists. Issac Hayes headlines, but Rufus Thomas brings down the house w his two tunes.

originally it was "Damn good coffee! And HOT!" - after he took a big slurp and spit it out because it was scalding. But you got that it was Twin Peaks, so half a frink point anyway.
-
Annalisa haters take note: Rosalie's sitting in today.
Me, I'm checking out some "Mashmallow Dimension" podcasts...

Late lamented close friend of Gaz, whom I also got to know well. Gone before his time was due.

The Twin Peaks thing was gonna be my guess.

I saw the Bad Plus with Wendy Lewis last night at Montalvo. There were some definite Twin Peaks moments with some really ethereal vocals. A bizarre show, but worth checking out.

Saw it at the Red Vic a year or so ago--some great performances, some interesting interviews. Definitely a product of its time.

Rosalie actually played the exchange w/ the Foghead over the stream today. She offered him a Moby Grape tune, San Franciscan Nights by Eric Burdon & the Animals, and Plastic Fantastic Lover. He went for PFL right away--said he thought that you hear the Animals tune all the time, to the point that it's become a cliche. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Sorry for the inside refs/oversharing. He's been on my mind lately. (The gang I met up with in DC were friends of his; it was difficult at times looking at old pics.)
