'LNG gives me Frank'n'Nancy, "Somethin' Stupid", which is anything but (even Nicole Kidman & Robbie Williams couldn't screw it up). I wanna do a Karaoke duet with the princess on this one.

my buddy Brian "the Cannon" Bannon on 'LNG played the Carpenters and wondered if they listened to 'LNG "growing up in Connecticut" -- I emailed to remind him they grew up in Downey, CA. Apparently they moved to Downey from CT in 1963, when Karen was 13; 'LNG signed on in the fall of that year, so he conceded that they weren't listeners -- and promised to play "Tarzan Boy" later (and I didn't even ask!)
Meanwhile, here's the 2nd Macca memory of the morning: "No More Lonely Nights", one of his nicest '80s efforts.

No "Tarzan Boy" yet, but he did play Tony Bennett, "I Left My Heart in SF"!
ETA: 3-1/2 hours later, and he's still making on-air references to my e-mail!

If it would get you to get up on the stage - and if it would get the Princess to visit the States - I would totally fly to SF for this.
Just sayin'.

JJ scores with Joe Tex's spectacular, forgotten "I Believe I'm Gonna Make It", a letter-from-Vietnam song that's truly one for the time capsule.
-
LAWD! Etta James, "Fool That I Am". Take *that*, Ms. Knowles!
-
Holy Flaming Mother of Pop Argot! The Hesitations (who?) doing a soulful cover of... "Born Free"?!? OMG, I've *never* heard this before. . "I'm so glad I'm born free -- hallelujah!"
-
Bob Shannon pauses in his "Behind the Hits" tribute to Beatles-on-Ed Sullivan long enough to play the orig version of Sandy Posey's "Born a Woman" by Patty Michaels (who?), a much more upbeat '60s girl-singer-sounding version (think "I Will Follow Him" as it might've been done by Jackie DeShannon).

followed -- holy crap! -- by Bobby Rydell's version of "World Without Love", also NTM.

The song nudged into the Top 40 in February 1968 - in a tragic irony, their lead singer was killed that month. (I know not how; this comes from my Whitburn.)

"oh Carol... I am but a
queen fool". This 1972 retro chart I'm listening to on CG includes a re-released Sedaka hit from the early '60s. And a NTM Johnny Nash hit, "More Questions Than Answers", which is quite nice. And -- OMG -- the Strawbs' glorious "Lay Down".
-
speaking of reissues, here's Jeff Beck (in his Hippie Hat), getting a 2nd go-'round with "Hi-Ho Silver Lining".
-
Discovery of the week: Junior Campbell (a founding member of Marmalade) and a UK hit from late '72, "Hallelujah Freedom":

-
10cc's "Donna", the only record of theirs that's more annoying than "Dreadlock Holiday".
-
The woman doing the newscast on CG is named Verity Gear -- is that a Bond Girl name, or what?
-
Archie Bell's fab "Here I Go Again" was a huge UK hit but sadly did little on these shores:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjmjf5PMChk
and it's followed by the J-5's "Lookin' Thru the Windows", one of my favorites of their lesser-charting hits.
-
wow -- Rod the Bod's fine cover of "What Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me)". Haven't heard this in ages.
-
NTM: the Long Island Sound, "1 2 3 And I Fell", a cover of an obscure Tommy James/Shondells song from 1968. Couldn't find it on YouTube, sadly.

A Tommy James anth is well worth owning, Mike. (And anyone else who can appreciate well-written bubblegum.) If I haven't already recommended it, seek out the proto-Partridge "Get Out Now."

another rarity: 'LNG just played the *other* version of "Can't Find the Time To Tell You" by Rose Colored Glass -- the Orpheus version is far superior but I'd never heard this take before.

Indeed, "1 2 3..." is closer to 1910 Fruitgum Co than, say, "Sugar on Sunday" or "Tighter Tighter".

Totally agree. I have the RCG cover on a Dick Bartley comp. Shockingly, it charted higher than Orpheus (#63 vs #80, or something like that).

and speaking of bubblegum, here's the Archies delightful "Jingle Jangle" -- sing me, sing me, baby!
-
Lawdy! The Delaney & Bonnie version of "Only You Know & I Know". I'm assuming that's Leon Russell on piano.
Followed -- only on 'LNG! -- by Soupy Sales, "Do the Mouse", yeah! Do it in your house, yeah!
-
Madeline Bell's orig of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me", before the Supes'n'Tempts got hold of it.
There's lots of Ms Bell on YouTube, but astoundingly, not this song.
-
best Valentine's Day song evah: Mama Cass, "Gettin' Better Every Day".
-

It's right up there, just barely ahead of "Move In a Little Closer, Baby."

and TANC: here's ABBA's "Honey Honey" "Now I know what they mean -- you're a love ma-SHEEEEN!" (I never noticed those grunts'n'groans in the background before!)
-
fab forgotten Philly soul: the Intrigues, "In a Moment"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QejLNzP_3-A
-
Donovan looks thru crystal speck-tickles in his fab "Epistle To Dippy".
-
Darlene Love is waitin' til her Bobby gets home. Hope it's not Bobby Goldsboro.
She'd be better off with Amos Moses... even with half an arm missing.
-
a lost '80s nugget on 'LNG that I'm sure only Gaz & I remember: Company B, "Fascinated".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lad1TtOK5Vk
-
"even a fool in his mind is free" -- Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd St Band, "Doin' What Comes Naturally", their last charted hit (in '73, after they'd left Warners for Dunhill).
Followed by one of my all-time HFHs, "Love Jones". "If someone was to rip me off of you, I couldn't account for mah actions afterwards." And even more black bubblegum: the Ponderosa Twins + One (!) with a 1971 cover of "You Send Me".
And a rare NTM Ike & Tina single, "Workin' Together (We Can Make a Change)" a socially conscious let's-all-join-hands ballad from 1970.
-
"Take you to the shoppin' center
Buy you a brand new dress
Buy you a wash-machine and ironing board
So you can keep your new dress pressed"
ah, they just don't write romantic sentiments like that any more! (Detroit Emeralds, "Do Me Right", 1971) Happy Valentine's Day indeed.
-
Teddy P says "Satisfaction Guaranteed -- or Take Your Love Back", their follow-up to "The Love I Lost", and how it managed to miss the Top 40 is a mystery to me.
"you don't have no reason to be nervous
Teddy Bear's gonna give you the best of service"
Oh MY!
-
Also NTM from JJ tonite: Millie Jackson, "Never Change Lovers in the Middle of the Night" :o
-
OMFG and Flashback-of-the-Week: Ralph Carter (the little kid from Good Times) and his disco cover of the Marvelettes' "When You're Young and In Love" -- I have not heard this since 1975.
-
JJ's Soul LP cut of the Week is my WOS of the evening: Natalie Cole's "I'm Catchin' Hell", an anti-women's lib song about stayin' with that no-good man just because. For shame, Ms. Cole!
