Just figured we need to move on. (pun intended)
-
Apparently Ted Kennedy had a seizure during the Senate luncheon, and has been taken away in an ambulance. Think good thoughts--if he were to succumb today that'd throw a bit of an ominous damper on the jubilance of the day.

And apparently so was Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV), who iirc is the oldest man in the Senate.
I got this much so far:
Kennedy suffered a seizure at the end of the lunch, and it lasted a while. He had been sitting with Vice President Biden and second lady Jill Biden during the lunch portion of the program when he began convulsing.
He was taken out on a wheelchair and had to have his legs lifted up to get him out of the room. He was loaded onto an ambulance and removed.
Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Sen. John Kerry, helped Kennedy get into the reclining chair in which he was wheeled out.
Byrd is 91, and his condition was unknown in this article, but he was wheeled out ahead of Kenenedy. Both were conscious.

SFGate had an longer account that said he'd been sitting at a table with Walter Mondale among others, and quoted another senator (Patrick Leahy perhaps scratch that, it was Orrin Hatch) who said that he had been swapping stories with his tablemates, but suddenly just stopped. That story has since been taken down and replaced with a shorter AP story that summarized what happened at the banquet, and saying he'd been taken to the hospital, but he was conscious and answering questions.
I haven't seen anything that talks about Byrd's condition beyond his having to leave in a wheelchair as well.
-
Now they're saying Byrd is fine, though he did leave early and because of his frail health he was using a wheelchair.
-
Getting off to a nice start:
_A freeze on salaries for White House staff earning $100,000 or more — about 100 people in all.
_New Freedom of Information Act rules, making it harder to keep the workings of government secret.
_Tighter ethics rules governing lobbying and lobbyists, including banning officials from lobbying the Obama administration after leaving government service.
That first point is largely symbolic, but it's a worthy message to send. And it won't make a bunch of headlines, but I can guarantee you that FIA revision is going to eventually lead to an even worse historical judgment of Bush/Rove/CheneyRumsfeld, et al.

Obama retakes oath of office after Roberts' mistake
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Obama retook his oath of office Wednesday after Chief Justice John Roberts flubbed while delivering it at Tuesday's inauguration.
The second oath -- also administered by Roberts -- took place at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday in the White House's Map Room. Roberts asked Obama whether he was ready.

All those Republicans who were crying that Obama was being mean to them better get used to it, methinks. Today Obama unveiled some environmental policies, and in the soundbite I heard he said,
"The days of Washingon dragging its feet are over!"
Sounds like a rebuke to me.

My wife, who is relatively clueless about pop culture, asked me who that was when she came on stage, and I said, "That's 'Retha Franklin" (had to bite my tongue not to begin that sentence with "Hey Nineteen..."
Then Christina said, "What happened to her hair!?"
I told her it was a hat. So you can be sure she's not trying to buy one.

OK, this was news to me and I somehow missed it until now: Toby Keith -- Democrat? Obama Supporter? Well, not exactly. He said some nice things in August:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/19/toby-keith-praises-obama_n_119930.html
Then in October he announced he was switching his registration from Dem to Independent, while saying nice things about (of course) Sarah Palin:
http://www.cmt.com/news/country-music/1596198/toby-keith-registering-as-independent-voter.jhtml
But the WTF aspect of this whole thing is: he'd been a Democrat all this time? He waited until a month before the 2008 election to switch? Huh?

That reads like he was just trying to be on the winning side. Either that or his declaration of his Democraticness was causing some revolt in his fanbase (see also, to a greater degree: Dixie Chicks) and he needed some damage control.

Given his willingness to appear on Colbert's show and (seemingly) parody himself, he's either shrewdly playing a part for the money or else he's dumber than a box o' rocks.
BTW, I wasn't aware until this week of the Dan Rooney/Barack Obama story -- Obama had said that he was rooting for the Steelers prior to the game (presidents usually remain neutral), and it turns out that their owner, Rooney, despite being a dyed-in-the-wool Republican, was a big Obama supporter, he was completely enraptured by O when he watched his speech the night of the Iowa caucuses.

Obama may have to make a Supreme Court appointment sooner than we thought. Ruth Bader Ginsburg has pancreatic cancer. Early stages, but that one is pretty virulent.

the comment was "Oh God", and now they think it was Chris Matthews who uttered it. You can vote for who you think it is on Huffington Post.
Jindal has been touted by the Republicans ever since Obama's victory seemed likely. Their thinking being that 'if the time is right for a president of color, then we better get one ourselves'.

Not yet having had my first cup of morning coffee, I initially read "Stevie" as Stevie Nicks. Which was disconcerting. ???

I thought the same, even while drinking my first cup of coffee!
that must explain why the morning show was talking about this when I got in the car this morning. They were playing a Stevie song, and then Fogheads were calling about music that brought them together with their significant others.

Prince Albert? That's a little personal, don't you think? (Btw, it's Prince Philip. Albert was Queen Victoria's husband.)

Apparently Obama gave the Queen an I-Pod loaded with old show tunes on it. Think she'll listen to it?? Or will one of the young Princes get it and they erase it, putting rock music on it.

Holy CRAP!! Arlen Specter switches parties and becomes a Dem.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/nov05election/detail?entry_id=39231&tsp=1
In his statement, Specter said since becoming a Republican in 1966, and being part of the Reagan "big tent," the GOP has "moved far to the right." "Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats," he said. "I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans."
He said his support for the stimulus package was not popular with his party but that he felt it necessary to prevent the recession from deepening.
"I am unwilling to have my 29-year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate," Specter said. "I have not represented the Republican Party. I have represented the people of Pennsylvania."
He expressed his regret at disappointing "many friends and supporters," but said, "I am also disappointed that so many in the party I have worked for for more than four decades do not want me to be their candidate. It is very painful on both sides."

I think Obama can make his nomination any time now that Souter has announced his intention to retire, but they can't start confirmation proceedings until he's actually left the bench, which will be when this session is over in June. So they still have a bit of time to work with. But Coleman is showing no signs of wavering, even though Franken's lead seems to get bigger every time there's another challenge. At the rate they're going, it'll be a landslide for Franken by the end of the year.

I haven't listened to, or read the transcript of the entire speech, but have scanned a few articles. I found a short fragment, which continues to illustrate how sharp this guy is, and how well he frames ideas:
Remember, too, that the ultimate irony of faith is that it necessarily admits doubt... This doubt should not push us away from our faith. But it should humble us. It should temper our passions, and cause us to be wary of self-righteousness.

Indeed and amen. I heard a clip where he talked about how those on both sides of the abortion debate should not demonize each other. Funny, those "devout Catholics" didn't complain when George "Pro-death penalty" Bush spoke there. (Do NOT get me started on the Catholic Church!)

Post-of-the-Day from a British guy on hollywood-elsewhere.com, commenting on Obama's speech in Cairo:
"You'd have to be a moron to pick holes in this speech. Well done, again, Mr. Obama.
He's fucking ace. I'm British and just looking at our shambles of a Prime Minister makes it even more clear just how phenomenal your President is. A once-in-a-lifetime kind of guy. Well done, America, for electing him.
Fox News can piss off."

I got to watch Countdown last night for the first time in ages, and it was all about the Don't Call It a Beer Summit.
They also showed clips of Limbaugh & Beck calling Obama an "Angry Black Man" who even "hates whites" according to Limbaugh. Really, so he hates his dead mother, Rush?
But Keith had the night off & I didn't much care for the Brit who was filling in, although he had one good zinger - he said he believes that at some point in the future we will learn that Limbaugh & Beck were secretly on the Dems payrole this whole time. Brilliant!

KO's been off for 2 weeks, and I anxiously await his return. MSNBC's bench isn't very deep, sadly -- they had Howard Dean subbing Tues & Wed (rather stiff) and Richard Wolfe is a great talking-head for them, but he's no host.
there was a lot of talk last year that they were "scouring the globe" for a new host to follow OlberMaddow in the 10 eastern/7 Pacific slot but so far nothing. Cenk Uygur (or however it's spelled) from "Young Turks" would be a fine addition to their lineup.
