Title: 4 Sept 2008: it's... 1991
Post by: RGMike on September 04, 2008, 08:56:07 AM
Dave was doing some '68 reminiscing this morning (today's the anniv of a bunch of radio stations banning "Street Fighting Man", he said -- funny, I thought that happened in August).  Anyway, I'm wondering whether this all leads to a '68 set today or tomorrow.  If so he's *gotta* play the "Time Has Come Today" megamix, no?

ETA: WTF?  it's not even a convention year, even tho' '92 or '96 woulda worked.

You're most probably right about '68. As for the Chambers Bros. mix, remember who we're talking about here. It'd seem likely he'd pull it out, but how often has he not played something we thought was a slam-dunk?

ETA: Woohooo!!! The player is working for me today, for the first time in several weeks! (Which probably means we'll get '88 today, and '68 tomorrow. :| )

I was thinking the same thing this morning!  Greg was so clueless and Dave so jaded about explaining what it was all about, 40 years ago!

Nope, it's 1991, breaking our string of election years.

indeed -- I'd stick around for convention clips from either '92 or '96  (you'd think Dave'd relish that sorta thing) but i'll bail on '91 before Color Me Badd shows up... Have fun, kids. Eeek! Crowded House!

VHM "Tough It Out" by Danny something or other.

Maybe this is a message to Obama, and the TotHK was a comment on Palin?

Err, Webb Wilder. (You were maybe thinking of Danny Gatton? Another Nashville telecaster slinger, died tragically a few years later.)

BOS Smithereens, Now & Then--probably as close to a bustout as we're gonna get today.

VHM Matthew Sweet, I've Been Waiting. I hear he has a new record due.

I don't know Matthew Sweet's stuff that well (I suppose I can recognize "Girlfriend" when I hear it), but I did hear a couple tracks from his collaboration w Suzanna Hoffs  -- "Under the Covers Vol. 1."  I really liked their version of "I See The Rain" (orig by  Marmalade)

BOS2 to the Skorps and this whistling tune!

Back in the day I always confused Jesus Jones and EMF, both highly associated with '91 for me.

Me too, and they appear side by side in many a set from '91 by Dave.

For me the EMF hasn't held up, but Jesus Jones still works.

Hee!  I guess I'm not bashful about touting my underserved faves.

So is the new M. Sweet him solo, or Under the Covers Vol. 2?  I'd much rather get the latter.

Sorry to disappoint, but I think it's him solo.

I don't listen all the time and missed today (will be sure to miss tonight's replay) but it seems like Dave plays 1991 every week. I know he doesn't but it just seems like he does.

Ha! that's MY line!  But as we've discussed here recently, he HAS been doing a lot more '90s sets -- nearly one every week in the last 2 months, whereas a year ago we'd get a '90s set maybe once every 3 weeks.
