Title: 4 Dec 2015: Scott Weiland RIP --10 STP tunes
Post by: RGMike on December 04, 2015, 07:57:25 AM
at 6:30 i heard a promo saying it was a "Koncert 4 Kidz thru the Years" set.  20 mins later Renee said AL would be doing a "special Scott Weiland 10@10" which I find hard to believe -- she rarely does sets for people who just died, and I couldn't name 10 STP songs with a gun to my head.

ETA: KFOG officially announced on FB that we are indeed getting a Weiland set today -- think I'll pass on that.

Trying to remember the last time we got an immediate (same day) 10@10 saluting someone who'd just died.  Closest I can come is that set for lyricist and Bacharach collaborator Hal David a few years back -- but that involved 10 different artists doing his songs. And was about a week after he passed, iirc.

ETA: I was also reminded of the "saxophone set" after Clarence Clemons left us -- also an assorment of artists.  But this seems like something that isn't done very often. Admittedly, I'm not a fan of '90s grunge; outside of a handful of Nirvana tunes it just ain't my cuppa. But I guess people who were in high school when STP were at their peak are the KFOg target demo.

I think the Alex Chilton memorial set came the day after he passed, but that was a good five years ago. (Gee, maybe it's time I change my avatar....)

I agree in thinking that Weiland was not so influential that he warrants an entire set the day after his death, but I suspect you are right about his gravitas with the Fogheads.

Sour Girl is song #2, I didn't recognize the TOTHK.

During the morning show No-Name, Renee & Irish Greg all claimed to have met and talked to/interviewed Weiland in the past.

Around 7:40 they played an accoustics Live from the Archives version of this song, "Sour Girl".  They also played "Interstate Love Song" about an hour after that.

And just to show that redundancy is fully embraced at KFOG, this morning they also played "You Oughta Know" & "Ironic" within 60 minutes of each other.

3. Lady Picture Show

A very Beatle-y song that hasn't had much traction in later years. Too bad.

on a lighter note, this took place last week:

Costco had a really good deal on a desktop PC, and we got one for Gabriel (who's in 8th grade).  I'm driving him home & he is asking me questions about components & terminology listed on the box, including "What does SSD mean?"

After a few of these I decide to quiz him to see if he remembered/understood.  So now I ask him, "What does SSD stand for?"

Gabe (correctly - but hesitantly): Solid State Drive

Me:  Okay, what does 'solid state' mean?

Gabe: America?

Me: No, it means no moving parts.

Gabe: Oh...Congress.

This was the big hit off of their 3rd album, but you're right, not much traction since.

And this is also why I find the Weiland 10@10 odd, since they've been playing STP all morning.  This ain't Kurt Cobain we're talking about, kids.

I'd also add that the Alex Chilton set (like the sax and Hal David ones) was an assortment of "power pop" tunes that happened to include Big Star.

Now it's "Big Empty".

I liked their second album better than their first (probably in the minority there).  I sure hope Annalisa plays "Vasoline" in this set, being my favorite Stone Temple Pilots song.

Here's "Interstate Love Song" for the second time in about 100 minutes.

4. Big Empty
5. Interstate Love Song
6. Creep

Oh, and #1 was Wicked Garden.

This "Half a Man" tune sounds an awful lot like "Big Empty".

7. Plush (acoustic version)

I know there's an acoustic take on this that was widely released, but this sounds a little different from that even. Did they ever have a track on one of the LFTA sets?

I'm sitting in an otherwise empty office, so no one can verify this, but I predicted that 1) I would hear "Interstate Lave Song" again, 2) that they would play the accoustic demo version of "Plush" instead of the hit version, and that 3) I wouldn't hear "Vasoline", which is the only song I'd have really been looking froward to.

Still and all, I'll take this over a Koncert 4 Kids set anyday.

No, I'm quite sure that this is the bonus track from the CD.  The way he mutters the song intro is definitely the same.

Interesting cover of "Dancing Days".  Where did this originally show up?

8. Dancing Days (Zep cover)

I think this is off a Zeppelin tribute record, iirc.

ETA: Yep, this one:

I suppose the last 2 songs will have to be Velvet Revolver & whatever his last project was called.

ETA:  I was wrong!  Here's my "Vasoline".

One of the top entries on my list of songs under 3:00 that desreved to be a lot longer.  Cream's "Badge" is #1 on this list.

No! You win the Vasoline!

I wonder if they spelled it like that to avoid copyright problems.

9. Vasoline

I was kind of hoping that too, but it's sounding at this point that it'll be an all-STP set.

I saw STP twice (on consecutive nights of the same tour; I was there to see the Meat Puppets and Redd Kross, who were opening) and this was the song they opened with. Gotta say, it made for a pretty bombastic way to start their show, with lights and smoke and guitars screaming.

or because they couldn't spell? :)  Vaseline is technically "petroleum jelly" and petroleum is gasoline, so it probably made sense to them.

Scott Weiland/STP - they were what they were, which in my book was decent enough. I wonder if this idea will get be repeated if someone similar passes.

I often wondered how the second half of the 1990's would have gone if it had been Weiland who had died instead of Kurt Cobain. Now their paths have evidently crossed.
