In Memoriam, Happy Birthday / RIP Russ Solomon, 92
« on: March 07, 2018, 09:30:39 AM »
Russ Solomon, who pioneered the superstore hangout for music lovers by founding Tower Records
and expanded it worldwide before internet pirates and crushing debts rendered the chain obsolete
and bankrupt, died on Sunday night at his home in Sacramento.  He was 92.

So I've been playing my new game, "60s watch," checking in more frequently (but not necessarily
staying) with K-Fox (KUFX) and The Bone (KSAN) just to see if they're playing a '60s song.  More
so in the car, when I might otherwise have left the radio off.  (I have a short list that I anticipate
hearing.)

I guess you could say I did a double take today when both stations were playing Queen's
Another One Bites the Dust at the same time.  Thought I screwed up the radio presets
at first.  Amusing and sad.

In Memoriam, Happy Birthday / RIP John Perry Barlow, 70
« on: February 07, 2018, 05:27:05 PM »

"John Perry Barlow, a lyricist for the Grateful Dead and an Internet pioneer, died on Wednesday. He was 70.

"The news was announced by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which Barlow co-founded and
promotes freedom of expression in digital media.  In a blog post on its website, the foundation’s executive
director, Cindy Cohn, wrote that Barlow "passed away quietly in his sleep."

"Barlow co-wrote songs with members of the Grateful Dead from 1971 until the group disbanded in 1995.
Some of tunes he helped pen include "Cassidy," "Heaven Help the Fool," "Black-Throated Wind," "Looks Like
Rain," and "Mexicali Blues."  He also wrote four songs on the band’s 1989 album titled "Built to Last" and an
additional song, "We Can Run," on the 2004 reissue.

"In addition to songwriting, Barlow was heavily involved activism for digital freedom.  He co-founded the EFF
in 1990, and has been credited with first coining the term "cyberspace" in its current definition that same
year.  He wrote essays about the impact of the Internet for multiple publications including Wired and the
New York Times, and his 1996 essay "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace" has been long
circulated across the web."

Happened to punch up The Bone in the car today; they were playing "Under My Thumb", which surprised me -- I didn't think they went back as far as the mid-'60s.
Small world.  I was also listening in the car on Saturday, punched up The Bone and heard "Under My Thumb."
Yes, they occasionally play a '60s evergreen.  That doesn't register as unusual to me, as it's just regular music.
What strikes me as strange is when I listen to KFOG, since a lot of what they play is unfamiliar to me.  I'll make
note of them in the future.  I'm reasonably certain I've heard UMT before.
The Doors' Break On Through (To the Other Side), if that isn't drifting too far into the late '60s for you.

Running an errand today, turned on the radio and pushed the button for The Bone...
they were in the middle of the Stones' Jumpin' Jack Flash, but 1968 is definitely
late, not middle '60s.

12/21:
On today’s edition of Soundwaves 10@10, in honor of the shortest day of the year, we’ll hear the
shortest hits of the rock era, most of which clock in at under two minutes. And because the songs
are so short, we’re going to double the playlist today and play 20 songs!

DW has honored my "Tarzan Boy" request.  But I wouldn't call "Alice's Restaurant" a turkey  -- it's far from dumb.

Alice's Restaurant has the obvious association with the holiday, and back in the day
WPLJ played it in its entirety on Thanksgiving when spinning a whole album side was a
remarkable act.
