Rock/Pop Editor (6-month contract) (potrero hill)
Reply to: rhapsody_editor@hotmail.com
Date: 2006-01-09, 4:57PM PST
Do you know everything there is to know about the rock canon, from AC/DC to ZZ Top? Do you look forward to the next season of American Idol, and can you distinguish between the different phases of Mariah's career? Would you actually listen to Ashlee Simpson…for fun?
Rhapsody, the premier online music subscription service, seeks an expert in rock/pop for a full-time assignment through June 2006. The ideal candidate will have a deep knowledge and true love of rock and pop music -- past, present and future.
Candidate will help build out and maintain the rock/pop section of Rhapsody (www.rhapsody.com) by assigning similar artists and musical genres to acts; creating genre and themed playlists, as well as playlists of recommended tracks by each act; programming the rock and other Internet radio stations; and identifying holes in our catalog of music. In addition, the editor will write brief artist biographies and album reviews (often under tight deadlines). Existing relationships with relevant labels would be preferable, but is not essential. Bay Area location is also preferable, but not essential.
Job Requirements
• Superior writing skills
• Superior knowledge of rock and pop and all of their stylistic offshoots and predecessors
• 2+ years working at a music publication (print or online) or related business
• Tech-savvy and familiarity with content management systems
• Proficiency with various PC applications (Word, Excel, etc.)
• Broad knowledge of online music business
• Well-organized, detail-oriented, self-starting individual with excellent communication skills
• BA degree (or equivalent)
• Must own PC and have a broadband connection
Send resume, cover letter and writing samples to rhapsody_editor@hotmail.com. Please put ROCK EDITOR in the subject line. Your writing samples will be the one of the strongest indications of whether you're qualified for this job, so please send several of your best (preferably published) clips showcasing different kinds of music writing, such as album reviews, features, artist biographies, liner notes, etc.

GO FOR IT! I don't know anyone more qualified. Telecommute OK!

I received a call Monday and had a phone screening today for a great opportunity. Cross your fingers for me. Hopefully an in person meeting will be offered. This chance is something I have lusted after for many years. Too nervous to offer more deets publicly.

My New Year's Resolution was to get a better job, too. With all the traveling I did the first 2 weeks it wasn't until yesterday that I finally began to put the plan into effect. But yesterday I sent resumes to Cisco & Google for specific job postings, with my Cisco friend offering to personally forward to the hiring mgr & recommend me on the spot. My wife's cousin (the one with the robot, Dave) has a friend at Google who he says will do the same for me. I also got in touch with recruiters at 2 executive search places.
Why, you may ask, do I want a better job? Well for one thing, when my CEO was here last week he handed me my bonus and as usual he was acting like he was being sooo generous. He told me not to mention how much it was to my 2 coworkers because they didn't get as much. I feel so sorry for them, because mine was $800. At least it was more than 1% of my salary, unlike my first two years. The company as a whole has had between 20-35% growth each of those years by comparison, during which I have gotten only one raise which was $100/month.
But I'm not bitter.

Not specifically--we editorial types don't generally have a lot to do with the ad staff, but it's definitely here in the 2nd st. bldg. I'll try to ask around & see what I can find out, but I'd say submit your CV, and be patient. CNET is not known for moving terribly fast when it comes to hiring.

send me some good vibes for international work! i'm supposed to be on a flight back to sf right now. but i'm going to try my luck in madrid in a couple of weeks. i finished my dutch class, and have been speaking alot. it's a fun language. i shared a row with two dutchies on the plane from madrid yesterday, and we were chatting away like natives! well, they weren't pretending. i would stay here, but my housesitting job ends at the end of the month, and it's much harder for foreigners to work in the netherlands than it is in spain.
fyi: my favorite quote from the weekend in madrid: "y judd hirsch, tambien!"
-
i shared a row with two dutchies on the plane from madrid yesterday, and we were chatting away like natives!
Reaction #1: I thought you said "HAD a row ..." and wondered if punches were thrown.
Reaction #2: So every time you got up to use the restroom, you passed the Dutchies on the left-hand side?

r1: ha! no row. i wouldn't want to fight with any of these giants. though they are mostly gentle.
r2: word!
-
I likewise thought our Princess 'had' a row.
I'll send you my vibes next week if you send me yours for the next 2 hrs.
I had an 11:30 phone interview with the director who is the boss of my potential hiring manager, and it went pretty well I think. Beginning at 3:30 I have to go back to Cisco for two more interviews, one with a director I might be tasked to if I got the job, and one with one of the 4 managers who report to him.
In case that doesn't make sense, job is called Product Cost Manager & one is responsible for driving down costs and/or preserving or expanding the margins, by any means necessary. So you get to stick your finger in a lot pies & see how many plums you can pull out within one manufacturing organization (typically containing 2-4 Business Units, each with mulitple product lines). So all the PCM's are on the same team and have the same manager, but each is assigned to a different manufacturing group with a different director. Got it?

as of tomorrow afternoon, I'm unemployed. Hopefully I will get hired before the fall; my teaching certificate came in the mail today. But it was a rough year, had a falling out with dept chair, so I don't have good references yet.

Not for long, I'm certain: Good teachers are hard to find. If you have the stomach for another year of it, that is. (I was forever scared off of teaching when I read Up the Down Staircase as a teen. That book taught me much of what I needed to know about bureaucracy.) Wishing you, and Mark, and the POC, and the Alicat (and any others?) and myself best of luck in the respective job hunts. Funny that of all the people I know well, I don't think a single one of them is satisfied and secure in their job situation. And these aren't fresh-out-of-college types; they're seasoned professionals in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. Kind of scary when you think about it. Like, when do we start getting some payoff for everything we're putting into the machine? [ /rant ]

Good luck Mark. Sounds like you have a leg up, so to speak.
I put in a good day of work today but it was not pleasant. Why am I not satisfied? Don't try to answer.(/rant)[/u]

And speaking of jobs, our special little company is hiring. Think of us as a re-startup. Doesn't seem like any of our positions would fit with any of you, though Ali might look at the sales position, and pretty much anyone can do Account Management (don't tell the account managers I said that). And you all know other people who might need work.
Descriptions can be found here:

Any of you qualified for / interested in this? The EFF do wonderful work.
EFF Seeks Staff Technologist
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), an Internet civil liberties
nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, is seeking a fulltime Staff
Technologist to work in our Mission District office.
EFF works in that difficult space where law and technology collide. Unlike
other nonprofit lawfirms, EFF is known for our technical expertise. Along
with our webmaster and sysadmin, EFF's tech staff includes a couple of
technologists who translate technical issues to two major audiences: 1) EFF
attorneys, who need to understand the specifics of how technology works in
order to do their legal work and 2) the general public, which looks to EFF
to explain what's really going on in non-technical jargon.
The staff technologist job includes being part of litigation teams, writing
white papers, attending technical meetings, public speaking, preparing
evidence or declarations to be presented to courts, and working with the
rest of EFF's staff. Technical expertise is absolutely required, as is great
writing skill and a healthy respect for deadlines. As part of the tech team,
the staff technologist will sometimes be asked to pitch in and assist with
whatever tech issue happens to be causing a problem at the moment. A
willingness to be a team player is a must. The job requires some travel.
Requirements:
* Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science or a
related technical field (mathematics, physics, etc.), or equivalent
experience;
* Strong writing and public speaking skills. Must have technical writing
sample(s) illustrating the explanation of a technical topic to an
intelligent lay audience;
* Detailed knowledge of and experience using and programming for at
least one computer operating system;
* Detailed knowledge of and experience using at least one (preferably
low-level) programming language, such as C;
* Knowledge of or willingness to learn about information security topics
such as cryptography and digital rights management (DRM); and
* Familiarity with Internet architecture and network protocols.
In addition, the ideal candidate will have:
* Experience with radio frequency technologies and communications;
* Detailed knowledge of the Microsoft Windows platform (development,
* debugging, reverse engineering, etc.);
* Hardware engineering experience;
* System administration or system programming experience; and/or
* Experience presenting at technical conferences.
To apply, send a cover letter and your resume to stafftech@eff.org. Please
send these materials in a non-proprietary format. No phone calls please!
Principals only.

Well, today, I signed away another year of my life. I took a position at Wallenberg HS, which is a small school, and the principal said she liked me. It's going to be rough, because I will teach 5 classes in 4 different rooms, and I'll have to wear a tie everyday, but if I can't survive those inconveniences, I guess I'm not cut out for teaching!

We knew your unemployment wouldn't last for long. I think the novelty will help you grow even further. And they wouldn't sign up on to something they didn't think you'd rise to. CONGRATULATIONS, Teach!

It's called an 'Alternative' school. I don't think they use the term magnet anymore. I was at a 'Dream School' last year. Wallenberg is called a 'traditional' school, and the focus is on academics, but I wonder about science!

From your posts it sounded more like a Nightmare School

well, the teachers weren't too happy about being told the year before that they had to re-apply to return to the school. About 80% of the teachers didn't return. Nonetheless, there's lots of really dedicated teachers there. It's an incredibly difficult job in the current climate.

Who has worked at a non-profit and what has your experience been?
During my two years in Boston, I was the administrative assistant for two nonprofits, Old West United Methodist Church and Safe Havens Interfaith Partnership Against Domestic Violence. The latter was comparatively well-funded by the city of Boston because it set clear and demonstrable goals that brought many communities' leaders together. Both were good orgs, even if Methodism isn't terribly compatible with my worldview; and while I was not very well paid, I felt good about the work I was doing. On the whole it was a good experience for me.
What, specifically, are ye fishin' to know? Curious as to what's on your mind.

Potential interview but their range is about 30% less than my desire and I wondering how low can I afford to go. I want to find as many positives as I can. How many benefits would make up for diminished wages. Might there be advencement potential within a year or two. Could I add to my repertoire of skills and move on and up more quickly than if I stay where I am. The job is spot on for what I love to do and I'm tremendously qualified. I need to hash this out quickly and say yes or no to move into interview stage.
Ironic this comes up right after talking about money and happiness yesterday. I don't know how honest I am with myself about the balance of money and or job satisfaction. I don't have answers that seem right.

You'll likely pick up new skills out of necessity, but I wouldn't expect advancement potential -- most NPs have limited org charts and so you get stuck in your title, if not your role. What's attractive about it, the job or the field? If the answer isn't "both," then this may not be the right opp to seize. I kinda think that in the Venn diagram of "job," "field," and "compensation," you need 2 out of the 3 for the sitch to work for you.

Been meaning to chime in on Ali's query. My wife worked for the Nature Conservancy for several years, and her experience was similar to Gaz's. She started at a decent salary since TNC is a pretty big outfit, but raises were meager if at all, and she never got a promotion, even though she went from being one of a 6-person admin department to essentially acting as office administrator with a staff of one. Which is why she quit.
Also, she found that non-profits don't usually tend to attract the highest caliber of executive (or if they do, they get frustrated and don't stay), so there were some pretty dumb decisions made during her tenure, but she had no power to do anything about them.
-
Thanks. I called today and said I couldn't consider the range but would love the opportunity if they could bump it up by $xx,xxx. I really would have loved the job but by Gaz's scenario, it would be a 1 of 3 love fest.

Good Luck Ali!
I had a phone interview this morning also, and am waiting to have one for a separate possibility. The one today went well enough, but I know they have many candidates, most of whom are internal, so heaven only knows if I'll be invited back for face to face interviews in another 10 days or so.
-
I was part of a pool of nine. Three will make it to the next level and I'll hopefully hear next week. I feel like it went well and I should be a strong candidate. There is one competency I'm short on but it's a desired, not a required.
Good luck to you Mshray. We'll both get an offer sooner or later.

Well, fuck.
Major layoffs at the Voice today:
Darren Reidy, a friend of mine who'd been a copy editor for the past year
Elizabeth Zimmer, the Dance editor (I presume the section is being killed)
Ed Park, the Books editor (ditto, unless New Times plans to syndicate)
Jorge Morales, the Theater editor, also a friend of mine (not to mention the only person still giving me regular assignments)
. . . and, shockingly, the Dean himself. Yup, Xgau is X'ed.
I hope no future prospective employer ever asks me my opinion of New Times.
Guess it's a good thing I'm a mercenary in the job force.

Damn. Really sorry to hear that. Equally sorry that I don't have good consoling words, but these are simply fucked up times. The only way to succeed in today's job market is to lie your ass off, cheat as many people as you can, and change the rules of the game as soon as you're in a position of power. It's the American Way, and it's despicable. There are two kinds of people in my world these days: The good people, and the fiscally secure people.

Sorry to hear they didn't have the good sense to call you in--I know you really wanted that one. Keep plugging, my friend, what else can you do?

So...
I am torn between not saying anything, by way of trying to avoid jinxing my chance, and sharing all the details, by way of trying to generate some positive karmic momentum on this thread.
And...
The deciding factor is that, in the aftermath of Bob's set that I missed all but the back-announce, The Drive is playing JT ("Shower the people you love with love..."), followed by 3DN ("Wash away your troubles...").
Thus...
Two Monday's ago I got a call out of the blue from a recruiter in Dallas (months after I'd sent my resume to someone in the SJ branch of the same recruiting company). He described a position very similar to my own, even to the point that the primary focus would be on the account with Cisco. He never said who it was, but over the course of several conversations (necessitated by him making a mistake in his inital notes, thinking I was currently only making $35k & wondering how I could justify such a much higher salary) I learned that they were European-based, which to my mind meant it could only be one company. I checked with my best buddy within the industry, Tony, and he confirmed that as far as he could tell it must be Worldmark; based in Scotland & the largest (& most global) competitor in our business space. Which in turn meant that I currently hold the only other exactly comparable position within any other company on the planet. I have all the contacts within Cisco, understand their corporate culture, can get mutilple letters of rec from Cisco folks, etc. But, by the end of that week this recruiter told me that my candidacy was no longer under consideration. SHIT!!! He seemed really stuck on the question of my making $35k, which was never true in the first place. When I asked him directly, he still wouldn't confirm that it was Worldmark, but his evasion kind of gave it away anyway I thought. After I got back from my Labor Day trip I called my buddy Tony again, and he said he had some contact info for Worldmark's US office in Chicago, and to say that he recommended me. The next day (last Wednesday) I met with my headhunter & she helped me put the finishing touches on a new & improved resume format*, and at the end of the day I sent it to the contact at Worldmark's Chicago office. The following morning just after 9:00 I got a call from the president of Worldmark USA. I had been right. They did need to replace their Cisco director, who was moving up within the organization, and he thought my background was perfect. He was actually glad that the recruiter screwed it up & that I contacted him directly, because it would save him the commision**. After 40 minutes of conversation he said they'd like to fly me out to Chicago as soon as he gets back from his then-up-coming trip to Europe, i.e. next Thursday the 21st. Email on Saturday confirmed his intentions to do this.
My friend Tony says he knows this guy, seems sharp, and that Worldmark is a first class organition to work for in his opinion. And they definitely have a career path for me, it seems the President previously held the postion to which I am applying. Tony said, "Mark, unless you go there and insult them to their faces, I don't see how they wouldn't hire you. You're perfect for this, and it's damn near perfect for you."
This better not jinx it though!
*I would be more than happy to share my hard-won resume expertise with any of the rest of you. Presumably the Dallas recruiter sent my little one-pager to someone, either in his company or in Worldmark & they didn't give it a second thought. But the new & improved two-pager got me a call from the president within hours.
**I immediately flashed on the scene from Pretty Woman, where Vivien goes back to the Rodeo Drive designer gown shop where she'd been snubbed & shows them all the stuff she bought & rubs their noses in the commissions they didn't get - "Big mistake. HUGE!". But I'm not going to do that myself, especially since I haven't gotten anything yet.

Email me. I still need a change.
I cross my fingers for you.

Worldmark Update
...After 40 minutes of conversation he said they'd like to fly me out to Chicago as soon as he gets back from his then-up-coming trip to Europe, i.e. next Thursday the 21st. Email on Saturday confirmed his intentions to do this.
Well, after nervously waiting to hear more, I finally got a brief email on Tuesday saying 'sorry for the lack of communication, I'm back from the trip, but this week isn't going to work out'. Then tried to call yesterday but didn't get a call back. Finally just now talked to the president again & we're tentatively set to have me fly to Chicago a week from Monday (10/2).
I have been & still am really struggling to be patient & calm & keep my hopes in check about this. But it's hard. I want this SOOO bad.

Okay, I got the confirmation. Going to Chicago this weekend. Meetings Monday morning, flying back out about 3pm Chicago time, which I presume means lunch before departing.
Wish me luck!

Luck, dude! And try to give Bob a call while you're in Chicago--although I'm betting you won't be able to catch his set live-but if ya get a gig out of it, totally worth the sacrifice.

BTW, Roger Waters is there on Saturday doing Dark Side of the Moon. Tme to score a ticket and see a show? Might bring ya extra good karma to mix music and business.
I'm seeing him Oct 10 at Shoreline.

Worldmark Update:
Just got the following email from Pat, the President with whom I interviewed 2 weeks ago in Chicago.
I'm planning to get things together this week and will be in touch by the end of the week to discuss options.
Take care and I'll speak with you soon,
Pat
I'm taking this as an informal yes, but I'm not ready to start celebrating yet.

Careful with those options, they've been many an exec's undoing lately. :o
The job wouldn't have you moving to Chi-town, would it?

Chuckle, but no, this is not a listed company, so there are no options of that sort. I believe the options he wants to discuss relate to my soon-to-be job title/description. One major element of which is being their account director for Cisco, which places me squarely in Silicon Valley, not Chicago. But Pat is based in Chi-town, so that's where I had to go for the inteview.

Okay, I finally got the email I've been waiting for.

I'll give you a call on Wednesday with an offer! We're
ready to get you on board......... are you ready?

Wooo-HOOOO! Fab news!! So glad this finally came together for you!
One small caveat: don't submit your resignation 'til you get an offer letter in hand from the new company. Based on the e-mail you quoted above, you're 99 44/100% in like Flynn, but you occasionally hear horror stories of stuff going south at the last minute. It won't hurt to wait til you have something in writing (and you probably know this already anyway). The above e-mail may stand up as a committment, but an actual written offer would be iron-clad.
Again, congrats, my man. A long time coming!! And you'll likely have reason to travel to Chi-town now and again--you should start chatting up Bob for drinks some time.

Meantime, I may have a new gig of my own, as a music blogger/community builder/trendspotter for a forthcoming website called TBD ("The Boomer Desintation"). We're still in discussion stages but this could be fun. Especially if you guys don't mind if I recycle some of my riffs here for TBD's consumption. :o
Will keep y'alls posted. PS: They're based in SF, which is another compelling point for me.

well, you're a Boomer in everything but birthdate.
Way to go Joe! Please come back to SF! :D :) :D :)
Earlier tonight I finally got to speak directly with Pat, my potential new president, and he apologized again for being so busy. He said he'd be here next week, and we should meet for lunch on Tuesday to go over the details of my offer (of which he further promised that I'd receive the details in the next 24 hrs, and apologized that the HR folks in Scotland had taken so long), and he added "I'm 100% sure that I want you on my team."
Which is good, since I had actually eschewed Jim's advice and given my notice on Monday evening.
Somewhere in the near future there's gonna be a party wherein I get to dispose of some of my newly disposable income. I may have sounded glib to this point, but seriously, this has been an unbelievably trying year for me, and I count it as a near miracle that I not only may be able to survive it intact, but may even come out significantly ahead of the game. I can't conceive of where I'd be right now if I didn't have all of your all's friendship every day to see me through. Truly. Words cannot express....

Aww, shucks, man...you'd do it (and have, many times) for us...
At this point, it sounds like you're golden. Usual corporate B.S. slowing down the process, but I don't blame you for dropping your exit letter as soon as you could. So when's your last day--and do you think you'll get any time off between gigs?
Oh, and GO CARDS! (Just not tonight--I wanna see this series go 6 or 7 games!)

Well the day is finally here. Today is my last day at the old job.
Originally I gave my notice for my last day being the 3rd, but they begged me to stick around until The Lackey showed up (last night) to have a formal handover.
I was still going to at least have a 3-day weekend before starting at Worldmark, but one of the 2 key accounts that I'll have there is moving ahead much faster than expected and my presence at 2 meetings tomorrow has been mandated. But that will be somewhat exciting, so it's okay.
No rest for the wicked!

Meantime, I've just had an unexpected spanner invade my works: The Voice is offering me a newly opened Deputy Copy Chief job. I'm quite torn, needless to say.

For reals! Who knew (a) that the Voice would be looked upon with such misgivings, or (b) that I'd be offered a job with them and think, "Hmm, do I really want to do this?"
If I take the job, it means I'm committing to a longer tour of duty in NYC, which is the most difficult aspect of the decision for me right now.

Well, here's the skinny, gang:
I've decided to do it. It's a pay cut, and it delays my long-term return to SF, but it's a rare opportunity to have a high-on-the-masthead full-time job with a revered (if declining) alt-media publication, and a chance to have insurance and paid sick/vaca days for the first time in years. And yes, having a staff position on the resume will do wonders as the road winds and unwinds.
And they're not making me skip my already-booked trips to Pittsburgh (Thanksgiving) and SF (Christmas), so whew for that.
Now, the sticking point: New Times may want to interview outsiders or insert one of "their people" in the position. We're hoping this is a perfunctory search and that they'll quickly agree I'm the right person for the position. But nothing is certain, and so I can't make any announcements yet.
-
I've decided to do it.
We wish you the best, assuming it comes to fruition. Make the most of it. And of course, this means you'll def be coming to at least one of those A's/Mets, A's/Yanks games next year. "I love New York in June... how about yooooouuu..."
-
I've decided to do it.
I would have advised you to do it for exactly the reasons you listed, and also because you can't leave NY until I have a chance to visit you, something that I can probably swing early next year with my new post. Is Spamalot still running with the original cast?
-
After less than five months as Voice copy chief, I'm moving on yet again.
Time magazine just offered me a position, a split of retexting (the work I've been doing for them for the past year, repurposing domestic articles for the international editions) and copyediting. Easier hours (35-hour, four-day work week), stabler environment, more prestige, opportunity to play a small role in the public dialogue on the national level, and oh yeah, significant raise.
I'm pretty jazzed.
Ironic that I should be leaving the Voice just as it's turning a corner editorially (the new EIC has done a fantastic job in only eight weeks or so). But it ended up not being a terribly difficult decision.
I'll be at the Voice through next Friday (we have an early issue close before the Memorial Day weekend) and then anticipate starting with Time on June 4.
W00T!

I misssed this post in Nov -- FYI, Spamalot is still running, but the orig cast (Tim Curry, David Hyde-Pierce) are long gone. I'll still see it next month, tho'.
Hyde-Pierce is currently in the Kander/Ebb/Rupert Holmes musical "Curtains".

Well I have no idea how soon I will get to NY, but then again doesn't seem like you are going anywhere soon either. Congrats on the new gig, no question that Time Magazine looks better on your resume for when you get your next even bigger opportunity!
ETA: and now I'm the second person to crack the 7000 post barrier. Only about 15,000 behind Mike. Woot!
p.s. after you start working a 4-day week you have no more excuse not to call me & catch up! I have some serious brainstorming to do with you.

I know, I've been a flake on this. But my existing commitments have really kept me madly busy (part of why you now have a 1300-post lead on me here). I'm preoccupied now with the impending new job and the deets of my building's sale, but I expect to take the last week of the month off, so maybe we can chat at length then!

There are niche boards in a number of fields -- in my case, mediabistro.com and journalismjobs.com, the former of which was exceedingly helpful. I've never made a work connection via Monster, but that's the luck of the draw sometimes.

My res has been on Monster and CareerBuilder for over a year -- I got exactly ONE phone call, last September, from someone who saw me on Monster and was offering a temporary position. But in Ali's case, it would seem to me sales/marketing jobs would be far more plentiful.
**PET PEEVE ALERT** White people who are not from the South must stop saying "y'alls". It annoys the crap out of me. Worse than "gi-normous".

Well your load is now lighter. Sorry. It was not the word I wanted to use but allowed me to convey "all of you", wanting the opinions of all, and not having to rephrase of spell something wrong when intending to query all of you in plural.

The English language didn't do itself a favor by using the same word for the singular and plural. "Y'all" and "Y'alls" are far preferable to Pittsburgh's variant on the you plural, "Yinz."

Let me guess...monstrous amounts of media hype tied to the exact moment they go on sale results in massive copy editing with short deadlines.

Customer relationship management. A way to pull and segment data about a consumer in your db in order to optimize your direct marketing efforts. It is a concept I know about and took a class on but have no job experience with the popular packaged apps. They are being used by many of the jobs I'm going after.

Craigslist makes the ears perk up:
The San Francisco Bay Guardian, the Bay Area’s progressive weekly newspaper, is seeking a copy chief to lead its two-person copy desk. In addition to editing stories and proofing pages, the copy chief works closely with section editors in managing the flow of copy to ensure that deadlines are met, helps plan ahead for supplements and special sections, and hires and trains freelance help as needed. Familiarity with Chicago Manual style is a must, as is the ability to work under deadline pressure while maintaining a sense of humor. Email resumes to tr@sfbg.com. No phone calls.

I wanted to go for the SFBG copy chief job above, but couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. Ah well, I'm sure it'll be up again; alt-weekly copy chiefs usually only have a lifespan of 1.5 years. (At five months, I was an aberration, but not an extreme one.)

They have a paid staff. I saw this earlier and looked up wikimedia and they have a jobs page. Said not to submit yet but check back soon. I printed the page and told myself to try and remember to look into it. The guy has a for profit gig going in San Mateo which is close by.

bizdev, partner dev. I could hack it. Not sure the pay would be enough unless bennies are great. Right now the right gig outweighs salary but I can't go too low.

Still working on something new for the new year. Secured an interview for the 24th. This is with a large not for profit business, pay OK, bennies good, solid and recession proof I think. Also trying to get into two tech companies. Not getting anywhere fast but not giving up.
How's everyone else doing?

I must say, I've fallen into good fortune with my TIME gig. It really is work I'm cut out for - the powers of OCD used for good rather than evil - and I've pleased the PTB with my work ethic and knowledge bases in the sports and music realms (you'd be surprised how grateful copy desks are to have people with especially specified fields of knowledge). Will apprise on the status of 85 Years of Great Writing as we get closer to the pub date.
Hope things are developing as they should or could or can for all of you,
Gaz.

I'm still plugging away in the startup, but also still doing so for sweat equity only*, so it's becoming a financial drain. Keeping my ears open for alternative possibilities. No clear sign that funding, and with it an actual salary, is coming anytime soon, although we have hit enough milestones to believe that the company is viable. So it's kind of a waiting game & I just don't know how much longer I (read: my wife & kids) can wait.
*in another 8 weeks I will have secured a solid chunk of options outright, no matter whether I stay or go, and if they ever become worth even a couple bucks a share it will have been worth it.

I may bitch about my job, but one cool perk we've been getting lately is some really interesting speakers of national (and international) stature. We had Tom Brokaw back in November, and this morning we had Madeleine Albright here at the difficult hour of 8am. Very well spoken, and funny at times as well. (She said she teaches a class at Georgetown called "Foreign Policy Toolchest" but she just learned that in current vernacular, "tool" is synonymous with "nerd.") The book she's out flogging is "A Memo to the President Elect" and I'm looking forward to reading it--kind of a laundry list of the things the next president will have to deal with to restore our country's stature in the eyes of the rest of the world.
-
she just learned that in current vernacular, "tool" is synonymous with "nerd."
I didn't know that. I thought a tool was more or less the opposite - someone *without* understanding of things.
At any rate, glad the workplace isn't all bad.
BTW, there's an L.A. outfit (I forget its name, this was from a mailing list I'm on) looking for a music editor. My more recent gigs have actually given me decent qualifications for the position, but I could not stomach the thought of going back to L.A. I'll stick with what I've got here.
-

I'm not familiar with that meaning either -- y'know, no disrespect to Ms. Albright, but she is rather old. Methinks she got her facts confused.

Yeah, her interpretation didn't hit me as entirely correct either (I use it to mean corporate pawn), but maybe she was just trying not to offend all the tools in the room. :D
Besides, it didn't seem the time to correct her on that.

I'm starting to wonder what it takes to go in a new direction. I'd like to get into the healthcare industry. Seems recession proof. What sounds very interesting to me right now is cancer and nutrition. My whole background to date is business and marketing. Can I gain expertise as a nutritionist and apply it to a relationship with cancer? I'd love to work at Lucille Packard Childrens Hospital or Stanford. I'm not a nurse and have no medical background. Needles freak me out. I'd love to help people and contribute to their well being. When sick kids are in the hospital and families are here to be near them, what jobs are there that help those families?
I think I need to get career information somehow. Training needed, types of jobs available. Salary potential for said field of work. Please offer tips or thoughts on this. Maybe I'm having the proverbial mid-life crisis......

Set up a meeting with HR at Packard. Strictly informational. Tell them exactly what you're thinking, tell them your skills, and ask them what sorts of things you could do without having to go back to school for four years. Then ask them what you could do if you did go back to school. Just find out the possibilities. "Think of all the possibilities, and make a wish!"
Me - I made a serious job change six years ago. Left upper mgmt in high tech because I wanted to be an actual parent to my 2.5 yr old boy. (It was my wife's idea: "You thought about doing something different?" "You mean, like marketing?" "No, I mean totally outside the industry!") I went way the hell in a different direction: I became a carpenter and started the odyssey toward being a general contractor. Not your usual thing to start when you're 43 or 44. It can be done, though. I have my license, which means that I have a lot of the headaches I used to have when I was running engineering, but it also means those headaches are mine instead of the company's, and it means I can set my own hours and decide when it's time to go home and be involved with the family.
It can be done.

Yeah, that's for sure. For those who hadn't seen it, the company I work for, CNET, laid off 10% of its US workforce today (about 120 people), in no small part an attempt to strengthen the comany against a hostile takeover that's being mounted by a NY hedge fund. The assumption is they want to buy the company, then sell off various pieces for more than what they paid for CNET in the first place. Anyway, I was not laid off, nor was anyone on my team, however several people I know well were given their pink slips, and that's never easy to deal with. Just hoping that more of these cuts are not forthcoming. I really don't need to be out of work right now.
-
...a hostile takeover that's being mounted by a NY hedge fund. The assumption is they want to buy the company, then sell off various pieces for more than what they paid for CNET in the first place.
Yeah, ever since some guys bought out the company that owned Life and Look 30+ years ago, and then liquidated for huge instant ROI, this kind of shit happens all the time. Sorry you're caught up in it, glad you're not on the street.
My own, hopefully more positive update, is that I had an interview on Tuesday & now will be brought back to meet the CEO next week. I was told that they only bring someone in front of the CEO if they've already made a recommendation to hire, that they have no other current candidates and that they need this position filled ASAP. So I better not blow it with the CEO!

Oh me too. I would never have gotten a call from these folks if I hadn't spent the last year back in the software world.
Not to mention the call I got yesterday - from a recruiter in CT who is trying to fill a VP job in Manchester NH for an old economy company with $10 Bn in annual sales that wants to spin off a Web 2.0 company. Pays $140-225k. I said I'd consider relo for that. Probably waaaaay over my head, but just geting the call was interesting.

Well well well.....
I am now officially on the market.
Laid off today. Job eliminated because company is stretched financially and they can hire an intern to come help out for a third of my salary. I really do understand and respect the decision that was made. But geez. Writing was on the wall but I never really thought it would be me.
I now need to really focus and entertain lots of options I may not have entertained. I guess checking into unemployment bennies should be first and then lining up insurance for May 1. Mike, when you read, if you have insurance advice or info to share about coverage, please email me.
Not sure yet what to do next week. Sit home at the computer and network, make phone calls? I want to be indulgent and go to a Giants day game 16th or 30th. Hopefully unemployment won't be for long. Hope I don't look back at this post in a few months and find myself still looking for work.

Ali, that really sucks. I know you weren't loving it there, but it's always better to go out on your terms, not theirs. Hope they at least did the right thing and gave you a decent severance. With any luck you'll be able to hook on elsewhere soon and not have too much downtime. CNET is not hiring many people right now, but there are a few open positions; I'll see if anything looks like your skillset and send it your way.
I'm trying to sort out my job future as well; I was hoping to just keep my job and work remotely after we move but that (for reasons I won't elaborate on) is not the case. I still have a couple other options at CNET, but if they don't work out I'll be hitting the Portland/Salem job market, and soon--we need my benefits just as Ali and her fam need hers.

Sorry to hear that Ali.
Always get yer unemployment -- I've been laid off enough times to know that there is no reason to procrastinate. You've been paying unemployment benefits you're whole life, you deserve that money.
As far as insurance, you should be able to continue your current coverage via COBRA for like 6 months. It's not cheap, and you should check out other options, but it is (or was) garaunteed.
Good luck on the job hunt.

Too late for today. I did go to a job fair today at the college I went to. Nothing great but made contact with Office Team agency to pick up some work when possible. Got three resumes out today.
I don't feel stressed, at least not yet. I feel very liberated and excited about new opportunity. I haven't told my parents or brother yet but I guess I should make those phone calls. Everyone else in my world already knows.

No kidding--I leave the house this morning as an employee of CNET; I get off the train and I work for CBS (well, I would if I were sticking around anyway).
In light of yesterday's court decision, (the hedge fund that's been trying to get seats on our board and thereby get control of the company won its case to allow it to do so), it seems like the company decided they had to act and act quickly. $1.8B for the whole kit and kaboodle is not too shabby though. Wish I were gonna see some of that.

woooo hoooo. Hope it is all you want it to be. Let's get together for lunch before you get tied up with work and before I'm working.
btw: I didn't get the job I interviewed for two weeks ago. Someone else who had working experience with their app got it. I don't feel badly. I sent a stupendous cover letter last night for another job (Company "B") that is a realistic possibility and got a call today scheduling a phone interview for Thursday. Hope I can talk my way into an in person meeting. It is my fourth time trying to get into Company B.

It looks like I will be starting a new job soon with Alpha Networks. Had lunch yesterday and hashed out the basics of the compensation, they want me to start ASAP. Just down the street from my old job on Great America.
woooo hoooo.
Continuing to think good thoughts for ya here.

Good news from my house: Christina got a job offer yesterday!

OK. Unemployment bennies running out. Desperate. Two great interviews yesterday. One commission based sales in a retail environment, the other a contract position with a great tech company. Want the contract job, just got offered the sales job. Must take and pass a drug test before 10am on Thursday. Won't be a problem. Good earning potential with sales but must commit to retail hours/schedule. I know I gotta do what I gotta do.

Fingers crossed!

Mr. Shark never even gave me feedback. I called and emailed to follow up and got nada. I'd still take it in a heartbeat. I just went for a walk and got a call from the recruiter about the contract. The hiring mgr is thinking it over for a day or two. Worried I don't have enough B2B sales experience. That should not influence things since the work being done isn't actual selling but doing behind the scenes work to faciliate B2B and channel sales. I asked the recruiter not to pressure the mgr saying I had something else on the line. I just want it to play out naturally. I worry about commuting into Sili Valley early in the morning but then the sales job could be any day of the week and up till 9pm. Just need to work again. Now I'm stressed.

I'm starting my new working life on Monday and will be in training for 2 weeks. Longish commute for the training and I'll be more absent from here than I have been recently. I so took for granted being in an office at a desk with a computer. I did have one extension left on unemployment. I'm crossing my fingers that this is going to be great.

Been two weeks since Ali started the new gig. She must be really throwing herself into it, as she's been pretty scarce around here (understandably). Anyone heard from her?

For you writers and you know who you are.
Job at Yelp,
As the North Bay Yelp Community Manager, you'll be a full-time Yelp employee doing whatever it takes to grow the community of active yelpers. Working out of the Yelp HQ in SF, your home or anywhere with WiFi, you'll lead Yelp's success in Marin County and beyond, and become an integral member of our all-star SF Bay Area team.
About you
* Lives to write; writes to live. You know who you are. Pencils down.
* Has a fire in the belly. Walks through walls. Takes no prisoners. In a word: driven. Even when no one is watching. Especially then.
* Social connector. You are the hub of your social world. You know everyone. Everyone knows you. You are the Mayor. The fun one. Diplomatic, too.
* Have more than a few years of post-graduate professional experience (existing Yelp community managers have 5 to 15 years).
About the job
* Writing. Write locally compelling newsletters weekly and inspiring reviews daily. Persuasive pitches to venue owners and marketing partners.
* Event planning. Conceptualize, negotiate, wrangle, plan and execute cool, fun and buzz-worthy (big wow factor!) events/parties.

A friend of mine in Massachusetts is perhaps uniquely suited for this - he's a longtime huge Dead fan (but not Deadhead) and pop culture/history knowledge vacuum with a library science master's. I've forwarded him the info - and wonder if his wife would consider the move if UCSC agrees he's a perfect fit.

Funny, I know a number of people with advanced library sciences degrees, and I know a whole lot of Deadheads, but I don't think I know any Deadheads with advanced library sciences degrees. Hell, I wish *I* had the proper education--I'd think about it. ('Cept for this cheese thing we got goin' on.)

The Best & Worst Jobs of 2010 (http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/st_BESTJOBS2010_20100105.html) from the Wall Street Journal.
Makes me consider going back to being a Historian (#5), and anyone know any Philosophers (#11)?
Having just mentioned my Uncle Dave on this morning's 10@10, I note that Dairy Farmer is #197 out of 200. My cousin Adam is taking over the farm in Illinois, and my cousin Rob (older brother of Jerome that you've heard tell of) is also a dairy farmer, in S. Dakota. :-\
And according to this list that's only one of the 35 jobs worse than NUCLEAR PLANT DECONTAMINATION TECHNICIAN

Thanks for the good wishes. I need them all. I'm stressed knowing that as I miss work tomorrow, it will result in a final written warning for having an attendance issue. Yes, being sick is an attendance issue. You are allowed three sick days but they count against your attendance. You're expected to go to work when ill. This will be the last warning and then termination with the next offense. wtf! Makes me feel like a little kid being punished for BS.

How did yours go? Mine went well. I have been asked back to meet decision makers on Friday morning. Friday is my day off but they asked me in at 7am. ay yi yi. I am being written up for missing 3 hours of work on Monday. One more time away from work before Mid March means termination. mofo's. I went to work today with a pretty bad cold, stuffy/runny, sneezy, coughy, fevery. Hope they all get sick. Wonder if my issues are stress related? Now you know why I get away to relax at the Tank and try to get tanked.
Mark, call me in the morning. I go to work at 11:00.

Hey gang, I start a new job tomorrow with training at the Embassy Suites at SFO for 3 days. A bit different from what I've done before, but seems interesting & looks like I'll learn a lot of useful stuff. Working for a company that does consulting services for small & medium businesses.
Also my next door neighbor Carol is starting a new job this week after being out of work almost 2 years (she got laid off by Merrill Lynch following the financial crisis). She's the one I mentioned before who's a liberal Iowa emigre, but whose father told her that we'd have a black president over his dead body. He passed away very shortly after Iowa approved gay marriage.

Thanks guys...I got that job! Good and bad - the good is that they're paying for my health insurance and it's closer to home. The bad part is that I probably won't be able to post as much here during work. My boss right now is making my life hell for leaving, BTW.

Well done, SG! Wish someone would pay my health insurance! Oh and a pox on your soon-to-be-ex boss. I don't know what people think they have to gain by acting like a schmuck. I suppose there's no way you can walk early and leave them hanging, and he/she knows that.
How long 'til your last day?

what a great boss </sarcasm>. There might be many reasons that caused you to leave your current job, but having a boss that would seemingly extract some revenge b/c you gave notice might just illustrate one of those reasons: That person just doesn't seem *nice* and who wants to work for that?

Thanks guys...I got that job! Good and bad - the good is that they're paying for my health insurance and it's closer to home. The bad part is that I probably won't be able to post as much here during work. My boss right now is making my life hell for leaving, BTW.
Way to go! :)
My 25 year old co-worker didn't know who Debbie Harry was. ::) :-\ :'(
My 23 year old classmate doesn't know who Paula Abdul is
And I once knew a girl my age named Ruby who was unfamiliar with the song "Ruby Tuesday".

Going to an interview at Samovar in 1/2 hour. This is on the down-low...my boss would *die* if she knew. Heh. ;)
P.S. This isn't for a job at Samovar. :)
*whispers* good luck!
Thanks, TC! The interview went OK (I think), but the food and tea at Samovar kicked-ass! Holy smokes.
Hope things go your way. Been at my job for almost 2 years now and still deliriously happy. Went through hellish awfulness prior to this gig so I am still grateful for my good fortune.

I had a 20-year-old kid working for me a year or so ago who had never heard of R.E.M. But he knew who Metallica was.
