For Friday, a little Monkees-themed set:

Suddenly my office computer's browser (IE 8 ) is "no longer compatible" with SoundCloud. So I'll have to wait until tonite to hear this one. But it looks fantastic.  Never knew the Fifth Estate (true One-Hit-Wonders with their take on "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead") did anything else, much less "I'm a Believer".

thanks! started listening this morning, but I had to cut out before JT.

Love the Joni song, but of course my intro to that was via the  Nazareth cover.  :)  I had that on a K-Tel comp LP.  Twenty songs in 40 minutes!

My "big name bust-out" theory:  there's gold in them thar hills!  Plenty of unmined nuggets on
the albums of the big artists.  After all, that's why they're on the other end of the spectrum
from "one-hit wonders" -- they have a deep catalogue and most of their albums have lots of
good material.  I was compiling some wish lists for 1970 & 1971, and to my surprise most of
the songs were from well-known artists and were relatively well-known in their day.  It would
be easy to assemble a great show for those years with only big name bust-outs.

Inspired by dischead's comments, here's my 7th visit to 1971:

 1. Flamin' Groovies - Have You Seen My Baby?
 2. Lobo - Intro / Me And You And A Dog Named Boo (per urth)
 3. New Riders Of The Purple Sage - I Don't Know You (per Geoff)
(TV: The Dick Cavett Show - John & Yoko)
 4. John Lennon - Oh My Love
(TV: The Dick Cavett Show - George Harrison)
 5. Gil Scott-Heron - Home Is Where The Hatred Is (per dischead)
 6. John Stewart - Daydream Believer ("funky!")
 7. Carole King - Where You Lead (per RGMike)
(TV: The Dick Cavett Show - Groucho Marx sings "Show Me A Rose")
 8. Al Green - All Because
 9. Chicago - Mother
10. Rod Stewart - Mandolin Wind
11. Stonewall Jackson - Me And You And A Dog Named Boo

https://soundcloud.com/retrocapnjack/184-10-10-1971

Big-name bustouts galore.  Deep album cuts aplenty.  Enjoy!

Can you update your Flash without having to get permission from an IT supervisor? That sometimes makes a big difference for me with streaming media, and it seems like they issue updates about every third day so it's not hard to get out of date.
Let's get right to it.

sadly, I can't. We're due for upgrades in the next month or 2, but meantime it sucks.

between the Clueless and Empire Records sndtks there's a bunch of great songs we've never heard that we should.

Using RGMike's theory (and with the lack of a '90s set for a couple of weeks) and an old request from Big Fingers McGee, I cobbled together a 4th trip to 1995:

 1. The Muffs - Kids In America (Clueless)
 2. The Martinis - Free (Empire Records)
(Movie: Clueless)
 3. Jill Sobule - Supermodel (Clueless)
(Movie: Empire Records)
 4. Evan Dando - The Ballad Of El Goodo (Empire Records)
 5. Black Grape - In The Name Of The Father (per Big Fingers McGee)
(Movie: Clueless)
 6. Lightning Seeds - Change (Clueless)
(Movie: Empire Records - featuring Liv Tyler and Renée Zellweger)
 7. The Innocence Mission - Bright As Yellow (Empire Records)
(TV: NewsRadio - featuring Tone-Lōc)
 8. Velocity Girl - My Forgotten Favorite (Clueless)
 9. Drill - What You Are (Empire Records)
(News: Bill Clinton on war in Bosnia)
10. Sinéad O'Connor - Ode To Billy Joe

I'd like to hear a 10@10 set of Beatles' covers... TOTHC:  T.N.K. (Tomorrow Never Knows) from 801 Live.

I've been compiling a Beatles cover set with you in mind.  I will start off with your suggested TOTHK.
The set will probably go to fourteen to match the number of songs on a typical Beatles album.
Hopefully I will have this finished by tomorrow.

As a memorial on the third anniversary of his passing, I offer a potential 10@10 set of my favorite
works from Gil Scott-Heron:  musician, poet, visionary.  While many notable musical talents have
been lost in the struggle with drug (ab)use, I think that his was perhaps the greatest loss.

I have also compiled a GSH set using your suggested setlist with a few minor additions (courtesy of
RGMike).  I just need to add a few soundbites and it should be done before the weekend.

And I'm working on Hits From Hell (for Friday the 13th) and Father's Day sets as well.
Some themed sets to look forward to in the near future!

It's probably too late, but there's a 1976 Journey cover of "It's All Too Much" you might want to check out...

Brilliant set, one of your best efforts IMO. Most of these I've never heard before (the one exception being the Teenage Fanclub). Very interesting how some of them are very faithful copies of the original (Fool's Garden and Flamin' Groovies, to name two) while others are really interesting reinventions (the 801 and Nilsson songs, for instance). And the Al Green cover of I Want To Hold Your Hand is completely his. Superb! Also I love that you slipped Dave in at the end -- YAY!

This is one that could easily see a second volume (not so subtle hint), as so many people have covered the Beatles. I'd suggest Yes' version of Every Little Thing from their first album (there's also a live version of them doing I'm Down from the mid-70s, ironic as that was also their most bombastic prog period).  And speaking of I'm Down, Adrian Belew covers it on his second solo record. And Steve Earle does a nice take on I'm Looking Through You on Train A-Comin', his first post-addiction record.

Btw, I think I am caught up on all your currently posted efforts -- listened to both your recent '71 sets this week (caught one in the nick of time, it was gone the next day) and also your '78 and '95 sets too. Will try to expand more on all of the above later, but enjoyed various parts of all of them.

One more thing: what other bands might be ripe for a covers set in the same vein as this one? I'd bet a Kinks set could be assembled, and likely the Stones as well. What other artists have been covered sufficiently to have a deep catalog of tributes?
