the Utopia tune is kind of a curiosity, from their "let's see how much we can sound like the Beatles album, Deface the Music.

That's a fun, underrated LP, IMHO.  In the mid-'90s when I was heavily into making mixtapes, I did a series of Beatle-related ones, several of covers (including the aforementioned Robert Palmer; I remember buying that LP on vinyl at Streetlight Records just for that song) and one that included Beatle soundalikes (Rutles, Badfinger, Raspberries and something from that Utopia album).

Holly and The Italians -- fabulous. She did a duet of "I Got You Babe" with Joey Ramone that i must dig up.

 2. Ronnie Spector and Joey Ramone - Bye Bye Baby
 3. Texas - In Our Lifetime
(Movie: Notting Hill)
 4. Elvis Costello - She
(News: Dusty Springfield funeral)
 5. Pet Shop Boys - New York City Boy
 6. Cher - Believe
 7. Prince featuring Gwen Stefani - So Far, So Pleased
(TV: Hey Hey It's Saturday - Tom Jones)
 8. Tom Jones and Van Morrison - Sometimes We Cry
 9. Blondie - Nothing Is Real But The Girl
10. Orgy - Blue Monday

I took some requests in creating this set.  Enjoy!

I never knew '99 could be this enjoyable: the F of W and Joey/Ronnie songs were NTM and just swell.

I used the PSBs tune in a recent SF/NY mix I made.

ok, that PSB song would've fit in any Pride Set.  HAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaay!  Have they ever done a less gay song?  ;)

i was familiar with 4, 6 and 10. Everything else was NTM.  So I guess people really were out dancing in clubs in 99... huh?

nice job as usual Capnjack.  That Tom Jones clip was a trip.  I loved the Dusty Springfield item, too..  Neil Tennant sounded like he was speaking well-crafted lyrics. His elocution is JUST SO.

... but I BQTM (Barfed Quietly To Myself) when I heard Julia Roberts' voice, although I think I remember liking Notting Hill -- mostly likely b/c of Hugh Grant. Can't stand JR, and the segue into Elvis Costello, (often a guilty displeasure for me) exacerbated my nausea.  l)

Inspired by Renee's superb '74 set, here is my 2nd 1974 set:

 1. Tom Jones - Right Place, Wrong Time
 2. Bobby Blue Bland - This Time I'm Gone For Good
 3. The James Cotton Band - Boogie Thing
(News: Philippe Petit tightrope walk across World Trade Center)
 4. Little Beaver - Party Down
 5. Lou Bond - That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be
(TV: Good Times)
 6. Jon Lucien - The Ghetto Song
(TV: Sanford And Son)
 7. Leroy Hutson - The Ghetto '74
 8. Major Lance - Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um
(John Lennon on paying taxes) (RGMike, compare John's remarks to George's from 1969)
 9. John Lennon - Old Dirt Road
10. Willie Hutch - (I Wanted To Be A Rock & Roll Star) Woman I Still Got Lovin'

the Little Beaver is one of the great lost soul records of the '70s --a #1 R&B single that failed to make the Top 40. I had never heard it until I moved here and started listening to the late great KDIA, and I thought it was a deep Rick James track from the '80s at first. Mr Beaver (as the NY Times would say) was a session guy who played the seminal riff on Betty Wright's "Clean-Up Woman".

But OMFG: this soul cover of Carly's "TTWIAHISB" is some kinda revelation. "let's settle down and have about 13 kids -- I don't care what we name 'em..."

ETA: loved the Lennon clip. " i don't object to paying taxes -- it gives people false teeth."

Here is the other 1980 set I made (this one after hearing Renee's recent '80 set):

 1. The Temptations - Power
(TV: WKRP In Cincinnati)
 2. Ry Cooder - Down In The Boondocks
 3. Dave Mason with Michael Jackson - Save Me
(Movie: Airplane!)
 4. Jermaine Jackson with Stevie Wonder - Let's Get Serious
 5. Roxy Music - In The Midnight Hour
 6. Joe Jackson - The Harder They Come
(TV: Countdown - George Benson)
 7. George Benson - Off Broadway
 8. Squeeze - If I Didn't Love You
(TV: WKRP In Cincinnati)
 9. Kool & The Gang - Love Festival
(News: Margaret Thatcher)
10. The English Beat - Stand Down Margaret

https://soundcloud.com/retrocapnjack/76-10-10-1980

As with the '74 set, it has a "soul patrol" feel to it (half of it anyway).  Enjoy!

these ads warning people about food poisoning from improperly stored leftovers is kinda getting on my nerves.

urth, I think you'll especially enjoy the first WKRP clip... ;)

2. Ry Cooder - Down In The Boondocks

very nice. Around this time D.L. Byron also did a new-wavish cover of "Boondocks", produced by Billy Joel (!) but sadly I couldn't find it on YouTube.

it already blows Renee away on paper (pixels), I'm sure listening will not change that.  I learned about the Smiths in this year, from their album Strangeways Here We Come, so I'll BOS Smiths and give you a Haaaay for the Lisa Lisa.

Was hoping to make my comparison this afternoon, but when I hit that link I briefly get a message saying soundcloud can't find that user, then it goes to a blank page with the souncloud banner across the top. I suspect it's weirdness on their back end, but just wondering if anyone else was experiencing similar issues. I work tomorrow too, so I'll try again then.

Btw, the other soundcloud page, retrocapnjack, is just fine.

ETA: Never  mind. It is indeed issues on the Soundcloud side. I tried to check out one of the recent legit 10@10s on the station's site (which also uses Soundcloud as their server) and it was down, and the retrocapnjack page is all ferkakte now as well. So I guess I finished listening to 1980 just in the nick of time.
