I saw Into the Wild this weekend -- beautifully made (probably Penn's best directing job yet), but I had a LOT of issues with it. Not the least of which was Vedder's droning voice singing too many songs.

I thought Eddie carried himself pretty well when he guested w/ Crowded House (!) up in Seattle last month:

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, 100 Days, 100 Nights: GO GET THIS RECORD.  You will not be disappointed.  Damn do they cook.

Sharon Jones et al?  Oh yeah, heard them last year up at Bumbershoot.  Got some video and photos.  Sorry I didn't hype them up more to y'all back then.

She, and they, are a force to be reckoned with.  Amazing live show.  And her first two albums, Dap-Dippin' w/ SJATDK and Naturally are also great.  Will need to check out the new stuff.

We also discussed them in the Capital Gold/Internet radio thread ; KPOO played a bunch of their stuff Monday and was floored by their '60-style cover of Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done For Me lately", which sounded like it was recorded in '67.
You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round

I missed a few day gone fishing... has anyone mentioned yet Bruce stealing from Tommy Tutone?  One of my fishing buddies mentioned it, and yes, that's Jenny Jenny alright.

ETC (edited to clarify):  On Springsteen's new single.

Rodrigo y Gabriela, Ozomatli, Richard Thompson -- hooray, they're on the new Live From the Archives 14.

http://www.kfog.com/music/lfta14/default.asp

Booo, they almost never play these artists.  Rod y Gab *maybe* on Acoustic Sunrise, but that's as much of a ghetto as New Music Thursdays.

Of course the DJs will get to play the crap out of them while they're pushing the CD, but then they'll drop off of the playlist for months or years at a time.

I HATE HATE HATE that.  And yet they keep playing goddamn Sheryl Crow.

Ah well, at least they have that John Doe track.  I love that song.

Also, I shouldn't complain when I got to see (and record!) Rod y Gab up close an personal in the KFOG playspace last year.  Hella short show (less than 1hr) for driving from SJ to SF during the lunch hour.  Still, free, and I was like, 5 feet from them.  Awesome:

http://darryl.phanfare.com/album/140428

Sorry, the audio is muddy and mono - this was before I got the new camera.  OTOH, the new camera would've been a lot more conspicuous.

Glad you liked the video.  Oh yeah, I forgot that we saw them in Seattle too.  Amazing to see them rock the crowd there, and the camera mounted next to the tuning pegs pointed up the guitar really allows for some fun video projections behind them on stage.

Ahhhh, Nil Lara.  Yes yes, I *loooooove* that track.  He performed on Sessions at West 54th -- I have Vol 1 of "Best of..."  God, that was a great show too.

The Arc Angels are still around?  [Warming up Google in the background...]  I've got that first album.  One of my favorites back then.  Let me go dig out the CD...

Just heard this at the end of the morning show--yeah, that is a pretty great song. Amazing that they recorded it only a month or so ago, and were still able to get it on the album. Might actually make it worth buying.
Let's get right to it.

Oof, I just heard it too.  Man, I didn't realize Kathleen Edwards (or somebody) wasn't in there singing harmony with him.  This song just isn't the same without that.  Makes me want to *not* buy it.  :-{

Album version:

(Hrm, a bit too much.  An acoustic version of the duet would be swell.)

Oh, like this (w/ Cindy Wasserman, sister to bassist Rob, interestingly.  I guess she tours w/ Doe):

So 100 Days/100 Nights got a rave in EW and I went to Amazon; turns out the Janet Jackson cover I heard is from their 5-year-old Dap Dippin'.  EW says the new CD is "less James Brown and more Booker T".

Mike, if you don't get it first, I'm getting you a copy for Christmas.  The bonus disc that comes with it is a winner too, in case I haven't hyped that.

Just received this press release:

Quote
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JOE JACKSON TO RELEASE "RAIN" JANUARY 29, 2008

ALBUM MADE WITH THREE OF THE FOUR ORIGINAL JOE JACKSON BAND MEMBERS

Rykodisc is proud to announce the release of the new Joe Jackson  record
on January 29, 2008. Entitled, "Rain," it's  the  first  Jackson  record
since the brilliant and critically acclaimed "Volume 4"  was released in
2003. While "Volume 4" and the seven-month tour that  followed  featured
the reunion of the original, iconic Joe Jackson Band,  "Rain,"  was made
with  three  of those  four  members:  Jackson  (vocals  and keyboards),
Graham Maby (bass/vocals) and Dave Houghton  (drums/vocals).  The record
was made in Jackson's newly-adopted city of Berlin  in  a studio  called
Planet Roc.

Very  much  in keeping  with  the  eclecticism  of  Jackson's  wonderful
three-decade spanning career, "Rain" is another genre-stretching  effort
from an artist who continues to  extend  the  boundaries  of  his craft.
Reflecting the  title,  the record  is melancholic  in places,  but also
boasts  plenty  of humor,  swing,  sophistication  and   barbed   social
commentary as well as  some  out  and  out rockers.  The  common  thread
running  through  the record   is  its   simplicity;   where   Jackson's
distinctive piano  and  voice,  Maby's  intricate  and melodic  bass and
Houghton's tough and tender drums are all you  hear.  A  rich  yet stark
production by Jackson and mixed by Paul Kolderie and Sean Slade,  "Rain"
boasts a broad, grand sound, open yet tightly wound and  focused  at the
same time, that emphasizes  Jackson's  sterling  songcraft  --  a unique
amalgam of pop, rock, jazz and classical  ideas  and  lyrics  with deep,
sympathetic glimpses  into  the human  spirit  written  by a  man who is
keenly sensitive, sharp and complex.

About the four-year break between albums, Jackson  says:  "I wasn't in a
hurry to make a new album. I promised  myself  that  I  wouldn't  make a
record until I had an album's worth of songs that were the best  I could
do. I think  several  of  these  songs  are  the  best  songs  I've ever
written, and I wanted to have 10 or 12 songs that I felt that  way about
before I put out another album. I used to be a bit of a  workaholic, but
I am now much more patient. The quantity has gone down, but the  quality
has gone up."

The band will hit the road shortly after release date. Dates will be announced soon.
