RIP Big Nate's BBQ:

http://insidescoopsf.sfgate.com/blog/2011/12/27/big-nates-bbq-closes-catheads-bbq-moving-in/?tsp=1
I enjoyed Big Nate's, but it was not my favorite.

Agreed. There have been several better bbq places around SF during Big Nate's lifespan, but they're mostly all gone (RIP Cliff's, Art's, Collier's, Do City, Firehouse, and the list goes on) and Big Nate made it to 2011, so there you go.  Is Brother In Law's still going? Memphis Minnie's is OK. For reasons I can't quite fathom, SF has never been a big barbecue town; they come and they go but they don't have too much longevity.
Let's get right to it.

TANC: last week I tried Baby Blues BBQ in my neck of the woods (Mission @ Precita) -- it's the lone SF outpost of a SoCal chain, apparently and it's been open about a year, been on my "I gotta try that place" list for a while. It was passably good.

I like Memphis Minnie's, and we also like Gorilla BBQ out in Pacifica.  Too bad large overweight guys with high blood pressure aren't supposed to be eating that stuff!
Don't stand in the way of LOVE!

SF restaurants that closed in 2011:

http://insidescoopsf.sfgate.com/blog/2011/12/29/the-biggest-restaurant-and-bar-closures-of-2011/#2296-5

I didn't realize Spork (on Valencia) had closed; it was always crowded whenever I walked by.

My new favorite thing:

Eating Right (Safeway brand) Mocha Cappuccino Light Ice Cream cups.  Lo-cal *and* pro-biotic.  Yum!

To celebrate a friend's birthday yesterday, we had a one-two punch of Osha-Thai in Glen Park followed by Candy Bar in the Western Addition. Next time I won't fill up so much on Thai food.... just didn't have room for the latter (even though the tiramisu looked mighty scrumptious).

Vintage 90s Gen-X recipes from Sassy magazine, yo.  Kim Gordon's, er...buttered tacos, Evan Dando's hard sauce...I kid you not.

yes, it's real: the bacon Milkshake at Jack-in-the-Box... and apparently it's awful.

Mmmmmm... Dim summmmm...

http://blogs.sfweekly.com/foodie/2012/02/san_franciscos_top_10_dim_sum.php

I love Yank Sing!  I've never been super impressed with Ton Kiang -- and it always makes the top of the "best of" lists.  We should try House of Banquet next time, RG!  My friend loves that place and it's in my 'hood.

Yank Sing is probably the best dim sum I've had in SF proper, but as the Weekly's reviewer points out, it's pretty damn spendy compared with a lot of other dim sum places. Ton Kiang is admittedly not as good, but I have had a few really fine meals there--and they were on my side of town!

All that said, the last time I was in the bay area for more than two days, some friends took us to a place in Emeryville that was just incredible, every bit as good as Yank Sing imo. It's called Hong Kong East Ocean, and it's all the way out at the end of Powell Street on the Emeryville marina. Great location, killer views (if it's not foggy) and we *loved* our meal there.
Let's get right to it.

I'll just say that Yank Sing is the only restaurant whose prices had an effect on where we, as a department at work, could go for lunch.
