Who knew that records had two playable sides?

I certainly didn't on first discovery of 45s.  I was introduced to the medium in '77 when I was 4 via my mom's collection, to which I gravitated "Convoy" and "Shimmy Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop."  (This should go a long way to explaining my tastes.)  I have no idea what was on the flip of either of those.

Records had two playable sides?? No, that's not true.

I remember 45s in the early 70s. I guess these records belonged to my siblings at the time. I just remember playing "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" over and over on my toy record player (it did play real records). I also remember a few of the Beatles 45s my brother and sisters owned (I remember the Apple label).

"Diamonds & Rust" is still quite amazing -- I remain astounded that it made the Top 40 at all.  No idea who the woman duetting with Frankie Valli is; guess they thought she'd be his Odia Coates.

Anyone else notice that Casey never actually named the Elvis song that debuted at #10 and peaked at #3?  I've scoured Billboard and can't find the answer!

Good call on the Valli co-lead.

And even better call on the Presley; I hadn't noticed that he didn't name the song.  Elvis didn't have a song peak at #3 in '58, so I can't tell what he was thinking of.  Maybe he blew the year and it was "Devil in Disguise"?

Casey's '80s reach all the way back to 1980, where Billy Joel is in at 40 with "Sometimes a Fantasy" and Waylon Jennings at 39 with the theme from "The Dukes of Hazzard."

Also NTM, Jimmy Hall, formerly of Wet Willie, with the McDonald-esque "I'm Happy That Love Has Found You."

Two Hot 100 debuts all the way up in the 40 this week: John Lennon at 38 with "(Just Like) Starting Over," and Neil Diamond at 32 with "Love on the Rocks."  The latter's one of my favorite Neil songs, and I probably would have heard it had I gone to the Super Diamond show in my hood last night.

Maybe it's mean to criticize a 13-year-old, but I never cared for the thin voice of Stacy Lattisaw, here with "Let Me Be Your Angel."

I hadn't heard Irene Cara's "Out Here on My Own" in 25 years.  IIRC this was (co-?)written by Leslie Gore.

I vividly recall small pieces of this survey.  The autumn of 1980, I was in second grade, and was enrolled in a gifted-kids class in another school; once a week one of the mothers (I suppose because they didn't want to shell out for a bus) would drive me and a couple other kids to and from these classes.  She always had on a station playing what we'd now call secretary rock; I got a very steady diet of Leo Sayer's "More Than I Can Say" and Barbra Streisand's "Woman in Love."  (Meanwhile, at the bus stop, I was hearing Michael Jackson and Queen.)

ETA: And very much "Upside Down" from that radio station - so maybe "secretary rock" isn't so apt.

Co-written with her brother, Michael Gore, in fact.

And I for one loved Stacy Lattisaw: I called her "the black Rachel Sweet" at the time.

Damn -- Mashmakan! Teegarden & Van Winkle! Candi Staten Island's fab cover of "Stand By Your Man"! I'm probably gonna miss this one, I won't be home Sat nite.  But could you post the URL for that Chico station? -- I'll try (probably in vain) to get their player to work on my ancient home computer (I think I tried once before to no avail).

Thanks -- I've tried a number of those stations and sadly the "newfangled" players won't work at home with dial-up. I suspect this Chico player won't either.

ETA: I can't even get it to work here at the office (!?) so I'm sure trying it at home is pointless.

UPDATE: I've tried several diff stations who use a "Liquid Compass" player to stream and none of them work here at the office -- odd, no? We're up-to-date with the latest versions of Windows. Flash, etc and yet I get no sound from these players after the initial local commercial video plays.
