Some fine stuff in this week's chart, good forgotten soul from Billy Paul, Bloodstone, JB and The Staples, country crossover from Charlie Rich and Sammy Jo, 3DN giving Leo Sayer his first chart credit, the Helen Reddy version of "Keep on Singin", and my beloved Marvin/Diana duet, "mah mah mahma-stake"!

Odia Coates, soothes, relieves Paul Anka from having to sleep alone.

John, what time does that Canadian station start its countdown?

It started noon my time.  So now I've got both Hot Chocolate's "Emma" playing in the '75 set in Chicao and Billy Paul's underrated "Thanks for Saving My Life" on the '74 in Canada.  Great songs (yeah Mike), not so great as a mashup.

OMG, Albert Hammond's "I'm A Train" is a earwormy blast from the past.  I used to sing this all the time...  I'm sure I sounded as annoying as the song itself!

She kills herself because ... she couldn't get acting/modeling work, even tho' everyone told her she would be a star? Bleccch. It's "Honey" with a better backbeat.

A song I didn't think much of at the time; I appreciate it more now as part of the BEK oeuvre and as classily-produced early disco. But those lyrics...  "I break out/In little bitty green spots"?

It still astounds me that this silly thing got to the Top 40, but "Free Electric Band" didn't.  ???  ???  ???  And if you've never heard his "Air Disaster", check it out.

it was cool to hear the orig Ooga-chaka-Ooga-Ooga-chaka- arrangement of Hooked On A Feeling by England's Jonathan King.

"I can't stop this feeling deep inside of me," he sang.  I'll bet he couldn't, b/c he was eventually convicted of having the sex with some young lads: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_King

But I will agree on the Billy Paul -- the man deserved far more pop success than he ever got. "Me & Mrs. Jones"... and this, which peaked at 37? Criminal. His fab disco rework of "Only The Strong Survive", which I've come to love thanks to CG, never even charted pop in the US.

And hearing this tonite, I realize it owes more than a bit to Cat Stevens' "Tuesday's Dead", but the Cat Man would in turn write "Banapple Gas" the following year, which sounds kinda like "I'm a Train".
