I've told nobody this exists, yet someone named Mark left a comment.  Was it our Mark?

Nice blog.  I saw a bumper sticker yesterday that you'd love. It read:

FRODO FAILED!
BUSH GOT THE RING.
"Music is the Earth, People are the Flowers, and I am the Hose."

I guess I need to watch the last of the 3 Ring movies to truly get it, but hopefully the bad guys don't win in the end.  I don't know what happens to Frodo, but back in the 60's, during the era of peace buttons, etc., some people wore "Frodo Lives" buttons, which suggests he appears to die, but people don't believe it.  Don't spoil it for me, I'll watch it someday.

I think one or two of those buttons appear in the video for Leonard Nimoy's "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins."  But I'm afraid to watch it again to find out for sure.

You mean you haven't read the books?  I have to guess you are the only Deadhead English teacher on the planet who can make that claim.

Now if you are worrying about Frodo dying in the end...
ETA  [Rod made me delete this part]

The obvious implication of the bumper sticker is that Bush is every bit as bad a villain as Sauron, and in our parallel universe he's winning.

Jeez, mshray, which part of don't spoil it for me didn't you understand?  While it doesn't seem like a spoiler in hindsight, there is plenty of tension there while we are uncertain what will happen.

Well, I guess I just need to see the 3rd film soon, so I can not be in this position again.  As far as being the only Deadhead teacher, I guess I always got some sort of lightweight vibe off of the Ring stuff, so I never read it.  The movies don't really make me want to read them either, but I sure hear a lot more references to this stuff in Led Zeppelin songs now.  I never knew what this stuff was before!

PS, I just put it in my Netflix queue.  I'll absorb it ASAP, though not in one sitting!

I am very very glad I read the books before seeing the films.  The experience it completely different.

Hey Rod,
Our club is going to play Tilden again this year.  We just played De Laveaga in Santa Cruz, from the blue tees, and I shot the worst round of my life!  something like a 149!  Just thought I'd share.

Tilden Park GC        Sun     SEPT 18th      11:30am

That's if I don't kill myself first, if I play another round that bad!  I'm trying to break 100, have gotten close a few times, and here I go, almost breaking 150, moving in the wrong direction!

The De Laveaga blue tees were ridiculous as far as changing the shots from simply longer (I don't mind longer) to like being in some kind of gun barrel!  I lost a lot of balls!

That's the same day as the final round of our Club Championship.  Unlikely I'll make it that far, especially if I qualify for the Championship Flight (no handicap).  But you never know.  We play early in the morning, most likely I'd be done before you start.

Don't give up on the game yet!  You'll get there.

I couldn't help it.  When I saw what Bush said, I had to write a little something:

Once school starts, I will probably stop blogging; we'll see.

if you ever listen to Air America (I do) and surf news stories (yup) you may or may not be aware of a new campaign of right-wing bloggers to trash Air America.  My latest blog is not really any kind of essay, just some links to a couple of interesting stories about what's happening:

unmasking the slime bloggers

here it is:

http://ggould.blogspot.com/2005/08/yes-theyll-even-do-it-to-grieving.html

It's basically just about how the right has been sliming Cindy Sheehan, the mother of the slain soldier, who's been camped out near Bush's Crawford ranch.  If you're curious about the slime, ignore my blog, and go straight to this article in mediamatters.org:
