KHUM/CG/KPOO/etcetcetc for the week of 3/26/07
« on: March 26, 2007, 11:07:05 AM »
went to sleep way early last nite, so I'm catching up with Little Steven's show. It's his tribute to "Pirate Radio" (on the anniv of Radio Caroline's first broadcast).  This new Dollyrots song "Because I'm Awesome" is, well, just that.  I'm consistantly amazed by how many of his "coolest song in the world" picks go unplayed by KFOG or even Live 105. I just looked at Live 105's playlist, and there are exactly TWO songs there that are Little Steven picks -- and one of them is the Raconteurs "Steady as She Goes", which, despite being a year old, is #15 on their current list.

Yet another oldies station, WKAZ in Charleston WV of all places:

http://www.1073jackfm.com/

Despite the name, they actually recently switched from a "Jack" format to something called "Classic Top 40", a mixture of roughly 40% '60s, 40% '70s, and 20% '80s.  All hits, all the time.  Not bad (I've heard better jingles, though) and not as quirky as the now-unavailable KOMY. But I just heard Robin McNamara's "Lay a Litlle Lovin' On Me", a gem you don't hear often anywhere.

British place-name of the week: CG's traffic reporter just referred to "a tie-up at Leather Head." Do tell!

New to me: Status Quo, "Living On An Island", one of their rare midtempo ballads, not a rocker at all. From '78, and it could just as easily be Smokie or somesuch British pop group.

and it's followed by Taja Seville's fab "Love is Contagious" -- why was this not a US hit?

CG makes my day (and possibly my week) with Bowie's "Absolute Beginners" -- would that Dave would spice up an '86 set with this fabulous track.

The jock on WLNG just played Gary Lewis' "Sure Gonna Miss Her" off a scratchy 45. And then said "played straight off a 45 and brought to you in digital quality". LOL!

I haven't heard that since '86! Damn that it's on neither Sade's nor Bowie's greatest-hits comps that I've found.

another new discovery: "Martini on the Rockies", one of those "hip standards" stations, in Denver

http://www.martiniontherockies.com/

I've heard Lyle Lovett's version of "Summer Wind", Elvis C's Bacharach cover, "I'll Never fall in Love Again", Rod Stewart duetting with Queen Latifah, and George Michael's "Kissing a Fool", all in the last half-hour.
