Bob said "Sunny Afternoon " was the Kinks' last US hit until "Lola"... here's the hits they had in the UK in the interim:

Dead End Street - Nov 1966
Waterloo Sunset - May 1967
Autumn Almanac - Oct 1967
Wonderboy - Apr 1968
Days - Jul 1968
Plastic Man - Apr 1969
Victoria - Jan 1970

per the UK chart db, it reached #2; "You Really Got Me", "Tired of Waiting" and "Sunny Afternoon" were all #1's. But I suspect it may well have been their biggest seller.

A while back you posted a list of the all-time UK top 100, and I clearly recall that this was the highest ranked Kinks tune.

I'm sure you're right -- it probably spent more time on the chart than the others. I certainly never tire of hearing it! And if you've actually stood on Waterloo Bridge at sunset, you hum that song for, like, a week afterward.

Bob just LOVES those "Great Shakes" commercials!  Am I the only one who actually remembers this product?

At last year's EMP Pop Conference, the wonderful Douglas Wolk gave a presentation on the history of Coke jingles.  He made a CD with about 50 different versions, on which he threw in a few Great Shakes jingles for variety (the Who and Dusty Springfield, among others).  I really need to play this disc for y'alls sometime.

Sorry I didn't get my Kicks.  Filling in at the Voice today.

The Coke commercials CD used to be commercially available -- released in time for some Coke anniversary about 10 years ago -- I'll have to see if I can find it on Amazon. Surely there's a similar one around for Pepsi. I have a Rolling Stones Rice Krispies commercial at home somewhere too.

just checked -- it's out-of-print and going for upwards of 58 bucks (!) on amazon.  Shoulda grabbed it in '96 when I saw it at Tower...
