The Peak, week of 7/12/10
« on: July 13, 2010, 07:42:13 PM »
missed Monday, but today it's a 1974 set: Ms King sings to her bra, Crapton shoots a sheriff, and EJ's son doesn't go down.

But BOSFRA to JT's "Let it All Fall Down", from his very underrated Walking Man LP.

VHM Stevie and the J-5 givin' Tricky Dick what for.

Holy crap! Talk about an ATBB: Neil Young, "Ambulance Blues" -- I don't think I've *ever* heard this song on the radio.

7/16/10 - 1981

Devo - Girl U Want!!!

rob also plays something NTM called 'Too Bad' by Doug.   kind of a fifties doo-wop dance tune.  Must have been a regional hit, because "Doug" ain't ringing no bells.

That would be Doug & the Slugs -- Canadian new wave outfit. Saw tham live that year -- their debut LP was big on NYC FM. Haven't thought of them in ages - must listen tonite.

ding ding!  Rob clarifies it's from Doug and The Slugs and they hail from Vancouver, BC.

some usual suspects, but today's set also had a song called When things go Wrong by a Robin Lane (NTM, meh) and Sleepwalk by Ultravox, a hyper blast which has a Doctor Who-ish synth riff.

Robin Lane & the Chartbusters, more early-'80s new-wavery. Again, a lot of these New Wave OHWs were popular on the East Coast. NYC's WNEW-FM seemed to champion a new one every month; they'd release an LP, they'd do a show at The Bottom Line (NY's premier showcase club), the station would broadcast it live... and then move on to the next one.  The Jags, the Sports, Doug & the Slugs, Pearl Harbor & the Explosions, etc etc.

BOS2 Devo "Girl U Want".

There must be some Misunderstanding -- I don't want Genesis in the middle of all this good New Wave stuff.

I don't need to hear the Bill Murray "Cinderella" clip from Caddyshack ever again for as long as I live.

uber-BOS3 Doug & the Slugs, "Too Bad" -- I truly haven't heard this since 1980. Wow, this is the sort of flashback 10@10s were invented for.  Their LP was called Cognac & Bologna!

hey, PG... "if looks could kill", we'd *all* be dead, no?

VHM Robin Lane/Chartbusters "When Things Go Wrong" -- this strikes me now as a darker, more talented (and less affected) Martha Davis & the Motels.

BOS4 Ultravox.
