How about Old Man, by Neil Young?

Confirmed.

I was just scanning my iTunes list -- I don't suppose we can include The Kingston Trio...  :P

rule addition: we can open this up and include anything that charted in the Hot 100.  Not sure if the Kingston Trio qualifies...?

How about Stampeders - Sweet City Woman

From Wiki on "Tom Dooley":

The Kingston Trio, Capitol, 1958. This recording sold in excess of six million copies, topping the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and is often credited with starting the "folk boom" of the late 1950s and 1960s. It only had three verses (and the chorus four times).

I vote for Eagles' "Journey of the Sorcerer".

or their "Midnight Flyer". Or about a third of their early catalog  ;)

I'd take their Doolin' Dalton, or maybe 21, off Desperado.
Let's get right to it.

Sorry I had to cut out early, songs with Banjo is something I have been thinking about for a long time, but never thought the rest of y'all would be into it.  I'm at the library right now, and suffering brain freeze, but one that immediately comes to mind is Buffalo Springfield, "Bluebird" (banjo solo on the bridge).

I'm sure I will think of more as I listen to my Zune on the way home today.

Diggin' around a bit on the internet, and there was a similar thread:

Somebody mentioned LZ's "Gallows Pole" and I played it on iTunes to confirm...  I really should have known that, big ol' zephead that I am.

Aaackkk!  that's the other one that I was desperately tryign to recall, and failing to do so convinced me I was suffering from brain freeze.  I was tantalizingly close to remembering it, and knew there was a great Zep tune in that category.  But all I could come up with was "When the Levee Breaks", which may also qualify, but I knew it wasn't the one I was failing to remember.

Kind of a meh set in my opinion. BOS Queen, WOS John Sebastian

Would love to hear, but probably won't (and hasn't been featured as a Hit From Hell as far as I can tell): Walter Murphy's "A Fifth Of Beethoven".

here's another banjo tune:  Robert Plant & Alison Krauss' version of Black Dog:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poiCzMOvkKk

They opened their shows with this T-Bone Burnett arrangement.

so we do have a variety of tunes, and although I'm not familiar with the Eagles suggestions, it looks like featuring a banjo in a song generall means it will on the kinder and gentler side... unless we open the voting up to include some bluegrass-y stuff!  :)

I think some widely known country/bluegrass tunes would go well here: Foggy Mountain Breakdown for instance (and I hope to hear the legendary Earl Skruggs play it this weekend!).   And what about Dueling Banjos?  Everyone knows that, but not everyone's a fan ... eh, Gaz?

that's great.   I hope to see Steve Martin at Hardly Strictly, but his set coincides w so many other great ones.  I'm sure he'll work some "King Tut" action into his set, since some of the Boy King's tchotchkes are just over yonder
