Major sledgehammer from the Seger tune, not to any specific event but just to the state of being 16.

I was gonna say nearly the same thing, though I was only 12.  I still don't get the first verse, though.  One line in particular...

I like this summary: he's dressed up like an adult, in his tight pants, "Points" (boots?) but he's still a fledgling.

One reference in "Night Moves" is widely misunderstood. I'm fairly certain that everyone under 40 thinks that in "tight pants points hardly renowned," Seger is referring to his crotch. (After all, "points all her own" clearly refers to the woman's nipples, or at least breasts.)

But the first "points" reference isn't anatomical. He's singing "Tight pants, points, hardly renowned" -- meaning, his tight pants are hardly renowned, and his points are hardly renowned. What are points? Little metal things worn on your shoes by high school rebels in the late 50s and early 60s.

I would clarify that a little and say that although he tries to be cool w the pants and his points, it is HE who is hardly renowned, not the pants and the points themselves. 

Unless he is wearing plain pockets and generic homemade points.

the whole inserting-"the"-where-it-doesn't-belong thing just never seems to go away. I remember as a kid having elderly relatives who would say they were going to "the Safeway" instead of just Safeway. It's an old people thing, I guess.

In the midwest both old rural white people and urban black people sometimes append a 'the' to ailments.  "She's got the cancer."  "My uncle has the alzheimers disease."  Of course a lot of urban african americans will even change that to 'the old-timers disease'.
