Wow, that mention of Rick Danko's death dates this set to December of 1999--he died on the 10th, so it'd be the 10th or maybe the 11th.

This set has been trotted out as a classic before today.  I know this for certain, b/c the last time I heard it -- as a repeat -- Dave's mention of Rick Danko's death made me run over to some editorial folks here at work saying "Rick Danko died! -- there must be a wire story."

I've been trying to find out more about that "IBM computer plays music" radio clip... I'm intrigued every time I hear it for some reason.

"Stay tuned for more Don McNeil in the Cloud Room of the Atherton Hotel in Chicago."  

where does Dave find these things?

As resident Radio Historian I'll explain that Don McNeil did an Arthur Godfrey/Art Linkletter type live radio show every morning on the ABC Radio Network for many years, "Don McNeil's Breakfast Club", based in Chicago, with a live band and everything.  It lasted until 1969 or so; by that time most of the ABC affiliate stations were doing Top 40 and McNeil's homespun folksiness didn't exactly mesh with "Incense & Peppermints", so his long run ended. 

A wonderful set (I was listening but not posting; see the Drive "Jimmy Page's B-Day" thread from earlier for an explanation).

Hooray for whomever programmed the marathon today, saving the best 2 sets for last: '77 and now '68. Sam & Dave got that old soul clap -- some penicillin will clear that up right quick, guys.

"Love Child": I've said it before, but have the words "tenement slum" ever sounded so beautiful?  For years, many New Yorkers (encouraged by WABC DJ Dan Ingram, who erred whenever he intro-ed the tune) mondegreened the first "tenement slum" at the very beginning of the song as "hear mah song". I didn't connect it to the identical phrase in the first verse until much later.
