Title: 24 Feb 2012: it's... 1969!!!
Post by: RGMike on February 23, 2012, 08:52:43 PM
yes, that rare week with '60s AND '70s.  The thread is up and running; making requests is almost pointless in a year like '69 but have at it.

Funny, my initial reaction when I see we're going to a year like '69 is "Woohoo! Good set comin'!" But so many of the recent 60s and 70s sets have been LN-a-thons that I am quickly brought back to earth once I have a chance to think about it a little.

Here's hoping tomorrow's effort proves me wrong.

I requested "You Got the Silver" by Keef The Stones.  Won't be able to listen since I'm working at the school again.  Hope it's a good one!   :)

AL's promo for today says "this year has it all: Pop, rock, soul, proto-punk..."  which leads me to suspect we're gonna hear the Stooges.

and AL sez "it's 1969, OK?" but starts with Chicago. She also says "song 10 will blow you away!"  Hrm.

I was a fan in the, er, beginning. By '78 or so... notsomuch.  This is our typical overexposed TOTHK. But things can only get better.

trombon-a-phone for me.

kinda muddy production on some of Chicago's stuff.  Make Me Smile comes to mind as a particularly notable offender.

It sure sounded like Martha Reeves; but per Whitburn it didn't seem to be a charted 45. A B-side, perhaps.

Most of the set was your typical DC-ized version of a 60's set.  If DC had his way, it would have been "Volunteers" instead of "We Can Be Together"

and once again -- it's weeks like this that make me wonder if things are getting better or if we just got lucky.  A good '78 set; a GREAT '69 set; and '89 and '92 sets that each included major Pop bustouts. May it be ever thus.

lord knows he leaves his mark on '80s and '90s sets but I'm sure he couldn't've been pleased by Glen Campbell, or that Vandellas obscurity, or JA (and that unbleeped MF) or MC5.  and the rest were Oldies staples but we avoided Steam, Spiral Starecase and some others so I'll give him a pass this time.

Not in the slightest. Very happy to see AL invoked the spirit of DM and uncorked what seems to be (based on your running commentary) a damn fine set. Wish I'd heard it live; as usual I'll try for the replay tonight.
