Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was the Gin Blossoms.

BOS to INXS's "Beautiful Girl."  I never pass up a chance to remind people that the Welcome to Wherever You Are is an unfairly slept-on classic album.

I know it's fashionable to trash the Spin Doctors, but "Two Princes" is a great dumb pop single that sounded great on the radio at the time.

Gawd.  WOS to the Spin Doctors.  No fault of theirs, but this was easily the most overplayed song of the decade, and the law of diminishing returns set in over a decade ago.

These early 90s sets are good educations for me. I think I was still in my- "if it's current I don't wanna hear it" phase.

I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

No, Mike's right on this one: If we went back and compared the past ten 1993 sets, I guarantee that Portrait song would appear in at least seven of them.  It's a very forgettable song -- a last gasp for New Jack Swing before gangsta took over the R&B landscape -- so I can understand the seeming unfamiliarity ... but it's a definite overplay.

This was a really fun dance tune back in the day, but I bet it is now the single worst Katrina, based on total percentage of year specific sets it shows up in.  We don't hit '93 so often, but I bet Haddaway appears in Every. Single. One.

Almost any song from 1993 would qualify as an overplay, but I don't think the song was ever played in regular rotation on KFOG then, so it becomes kind of existential as far as Katrina-worthiness is concerned.  How many 1993 sets have there even been?

I interpret it as a statement against the existence of a space program when we've got so many urgent matters on this sphere to take care of first.  To that extent, I *do* agree with the song's sentiment.  But here are the lyrics; YMMV ...

Sleeping Satellite

I blame you for the moonlit sky

and the dream that died

with the eagle's flight

I blame you for the moonlit nights

when I wonder why

are the seas still dry?

Don't blame this sleeping satellite

Did we fly to the moon too soon?

Did we squander the chance?

In the rush of the race

in the reason we chase is lost in romance

and still we try

to justify the waste

for a taste of mans greatest adventure.

Have we got what it takes to advance?

Did we peak too soon?

If the world is so green

then why does it scream under a blue moon?

We wonder why

the earth's sacrificed

for the price of its greatest treasure

Did we fly to the moon too soon?

Did we squander the chance?

In the rush of the race

in the reason we chase is lost in romance

and still we try

to justify the waste

for a taste of mans greatest adventure.

And when we shoot for the stars

what a giant step

have we got what it takes

to carry the weight of this concept?

Or pass it by

like a shot in the dark

miss the mark with a sense of adventure

Did we fly to the moon too soon?

Did we squander the chance?

In the rush of the race

in the reason we chase is lost in romance

and still we try

to justify the waste

for a taste of mans greatest adventure.

Gaz is correct about the sentiment, and I just happen to subscribe to the benefits of the space program.  The reason there are poor people on Earth has nothing to do with space exploration, and everything to do with greed and corruption [see the reign of W]

PS, as a former aerospace worker, all the graphite necked guitars and basses I've made over the years would not have happened without the space program, not to mention the computers we are using now, as far as microtechnology development!

I'm with Geoff on this one.  Aspiring to put a man on the moon pretty much paid for itself in purely macroeconomic terms, and such aspiration (imho) was good for the human condition generally.  The simultaneous aspiration to stop the Communist "domino effect" in SE Asia cost about a trillion in current dollar terms, several millions dead in the region & tens  of thousands of US servicepeople, and absolutely zero measurable benefit for anyone in the long term.
