Title: Songs that begin with a question...
Post by: sundaygal on December 25, 2010, 04:39:56 PM
Big Rick posted this fun game on his FB page:

Hey Everybody! It is thought that collectively Fogheads know everything. So if you listen to Kfog Fm or not let's play a game! Name songs that start with a question as the first line of the lyrics but do not have a question as the song title. Example of a wrong answer. "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?" both song title and first lyric are a question, no go.

He went first with Bohemian Rhapsody.  I selected Blue Monday "How does it feel?" and (I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence Dear "Was it destiny? I don't know yet."

The Who - from Quadrophenia

The Real Me:  "Can you see the real me? Can ya? Can ya?"

5:15: "Why should I care?"

... And yet another: Cut My Hair starts with something like "Why should I care if I have to cut my hair?"

a few more occurred to me

The Candy Man: " Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew?"

Blowin' In The Wind: "How many roads most a man walk down before you call him a man?"

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer: "You know Dasher and Dancer... etc.., but do you recall the most famous reindeer of all?"

Cat People (Putting Out Fire)
: "See these eyes so green?"   (ok, that might intended to be a statement or command, like "See, these eyes so green.")

Or The Stranglers "Always The Sun".
How many times have you woken up and prayed for the rain?

Or jumping back a few decades, the Theme from 'Love Story':

Where do I begin to tell the story of how great a love can be?

That one may get disqualified as its full title includes the parenthetical (Where Do I Begin).

I thought I'd pick a year and see how many charted hits I could find that start with questions. This is 1969 (see how many you can ID):

"Anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?"

"Have I ever told you how good it feels to hold you?"

"Why do you build me up Buttercup, baby, just to let me down?"

"If you had a choice of colors, which one would you choose, my brothers?"

"How can people be so heartless?"

"What do you get when you fall in love?"

"Anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?"
- Abraham Martin and John

"Have I ever told you how good it feels to hold you?"
??

"Why do you build me up Buttercup, baby, just to let me down?"
Build me Up Buttercup

"If you had a choice of colors, which one would you choose, my brothers?"
??

"How can people be so heartless?"
- Easy to Be Hard - Three Dog Night (I knew it was a 3DN song, and although I have it on my itunes, I forgot the title and had to look it up)

"What do you get when you fall in love?"
- I'll Never Fall In Love Again, Dionne Warwick's version, please!

OK, here's the next line:
Would you know just what to do or where to keep it?

Ding ding ding! on the ones you guessed.

"Have I ever told you how good it feels to hold you?"
??

is tricky; it's a remake of an early-'60s hit.

"If you had a choice of colors, which one would you choose, my brothers?"
??

is a soul classic.

here's one

What would you think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me?

or as Joe Cocker might sing:

What would you do half-a-sat attitude?
Would you standard a war cat emmy?

Is there anybody going to listen to my story ... ?

You go, Girl!

Who's peeking out from under a stairway ... ?

everyone knows that's from Windy

Isn't it rich?

Stephen Sondheim was on Terry Gross' Fresh Air talking about this song (among other things), and he said he constructed those first lyrics b/c the singer chosen for the role really wasn't a singer, and those lines could be uttered effectively by more or less saying them in a conversational tone:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Send_in_the_Clowns#History

"Sondheim wrote the lyrics and music over a two-day period during rehearsals for the play's Broadway debut,[4] specifically for the actress Glynis Johns, who created the role of Desirée.[4] According to Sondheim, "Glynis had a lovely, crystal voice, but sustaining notes was not her thing. I wanted to write short phrases, so I wrote a song full of questions" and the song's melody is within a small music range."

as one wag once said about Sondheim: "Isn't he rich? Isn't he queer?"

listening to KPOO, and JJ is laying down the Smoove Grooves.
He played an R Kelly song that starts with a question, woo hoo!    this is probably the only time I'll ever hear this song, so I thought I'd immortalize it here:

R Kelly
Love Letter

Did you get my card?
Did you get my love letter?

technically, the song starts with some "Do do do's" and a "Yeah," but we won't count that.
