For some reason I thought that door had already been closed. I don't know why I thought he had already died.

Very sad :'( But maybe now we'll get the real story of the car accident and the tranny (and by "tranny" I don't mean his transmission).

Love it. Wish they'd upped the tempo a tad, though.

'LNG playing one of my fave Teddy tunes, "I Don't Love You Any More" -- one of the greatest peaked-at-#41 singles evah. Here's a more detailed obit from the UK -- it mentions the scandal surrounding the crash but doesn't say anything about a tranny.

Meant to say earlier that I was surprised he was only 59 -- I'd've guessed older. Must be because of his gruff voice, but it's astounding to think he was only 21 when he recorded "The Love I Lost" and "If You Don't Know Me By Now".

OMG, those Soul Train velour outfits with cut-away panels are too much!
Damn, what a voice. I credit Dave Morey and 10 at 10 with turning me onto The Blue Notes, esp Don't Leave Me This Way. I never knew about his accident details. but no biggie. If he was hanging out with a "Betty Genderpass" that's his biz.

I recall in the mid-90's he and Stephanie Mills were appearing in a musical at the Paramount Theater in Oakland and the town was a buzz that he was staying at that hotel on Broadway at 12th St (Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton?).

ah, that would be Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac. That's a nice break every morning. -- Geoff knows this! :)
Every weekday at 9 AM, you'll hear Terry Gross' voice announce "From WHYY in Philadelphia and this .... is FRESSSH AIRRRR."
Then they break for the Almanac and come back and start Fresh Air.

Larry Grogan of the "Funky 16 Corners" blog posted this terrific appreciation of the Teddy P version of "Don't Leave Me This Way" -- glad to see I wasn't the only one for whom this version flew under my radar (I'd never heard it until a few years ago).

most folks heard Thelma's first, methinks -- the Teddy was an LP cut in an era when R&B LP cuts didn't get radio exposure (unless it was Stevie Wonder). Philly Int'l was crazy not to release it as a 45, tho'.
