Title: The Food Thread
Post by: RGMike on March 24, 2009, 12:11:45 PM
for the princess especially: the Streep as Julia Child (coming this summer)!

I'm curious--in what film does she play Julia? Never thought about it, but JC would make an interesting biopic subject, since before becoming a food icon, she was a counterintelligence operative during WWII. Really.

I just want to see her weeping tears of joy at Tu Lan at 6th and Mission.

Are they still there? That place milked Julia's recco for all it was worth, even though it was pretty filthy the last couple times I was in there. Loved their imperial rolls and pan fried noodles though. Lots of Warfield staff ate their regularly, since they're right across the street. Also Cancun, for the same reason.

I ate there when I visited in December.  The place is a hole, as is the whole block, but it's really got the best bun cha I've had in my life.  I try to stop by every time I'm in town.

we've gotta get you to Shanghai Dumpling King next trip.

The one out on Balboa, a few blocks from the Balboa theater, yes? Also a great place.

I ate there last nite, in fact -- "I Love You man" was playing at the Balboa, so it was all the excuse I needed to pig out.

Delectaqble idea, my friend.  And I do love my dumplings.

Goodness, do I hope I can make it back to SF again this year.  Having a wanderlust moment at work.

If you like good cheap dim sum, try Good Luck on Clement St. near 9th Ave (across from Walgreens) in San Francisco. Prices are very cheap (some are like 3 pieces for $1.50 or something like that).
Title: Nutrition Info
Post by: ggould on March 25, 2009, 07:58:47 PM
Just wondering if some of you have been down this road before me, where you find good nutrition data.  I've been doing the calorie and sodium thing, and it's working pretty well, but sometimes it's hard to estimate how many calories are in things, like burritos!  When I get burritos, it's grilled chicken, black beans, rice, and avocado, but not sure how to score the calories!

way back when the interwebs were new I found this online calorie counter thing:
http://www.nat.uiuc.edu/

There might be other tools out there, but I'm too lazy to find them.

If you look up 'burrito' you'll find just fast food versions of burritos, but you can piece together a California burrito if you look up each indiv item separately and compile a list:
(tortilla > flour > 1 serving of 3 oz> "save" -- beans > pinto > cooked > 1 serving of 1 cup "save", etc...).

then you "analyze" your assembled items. In my case it's my quick version of a chicken burrito, note I chose some brand name ingredients (Taco Bell Salsa, eg) as closest approximations of what I would probably eat.

I'm pretty sure Yank Sing serves Shanghai Dumplings, but they probably charge 3 or 4 bucks for 4 of them, whereas Dumpling King gives you 10 (!) for $5.25 -- yum!

I ate at Farmer Brown's once last year before going to a Warfield show. (They're trying to make down home cooking haute cuisine.) Was not too impressed. $15 for a "large" bowl of gumbo that was neither substantial nor terribly spicy. Also, the place was jammed with hipsters and noisy as hell (I think the Chron gave them a "bomb" rating for noise in their review), but I imagine that was the crowd they were going for. Thumbs down here.

It might be the same ep, but not the same dialog.

Andy & Doug are sitting in the living room arguing about the definition of taint, and as Lupita walks by, Andy asks her for a ruling:

Andy: Hey Lupita, what do you call the thing between the dick and the asshole?
Lupita: The coffee table.

Here's the banana reference for those of you don't watch Weeds:

Setting: Nancy has just paid a plumber $200 bucks to fix a clog that turns out to have been a sock flushed downthe toilet.  The plumber tells her that she must have a pubescent son who needs to have a conversation.  She is too flustered to talk to her son Shane about it & delegates to her charming low-life brother-in-law, Andy, who cheerfully accepts the assignment:

Andy Botwin: [to Shane about masturbation] Alright, listen closely. I'm not going to beat around the bush. Ha ha ha. Your little body's changing - it's all good, believe me. Problem now is... every time we jerk the gerkin, we get a lot of unwanted sticky white stuff everywhere, right? Right. So... First order of business - no more socks. They're expensive, gumming up the works plumming-wise. Now you might be thinking to yourself, "But, Uncle Andy, what do I do with all that pearl jam if I can't spew it into Mr. Sock?" Glad you asked... You can have a lovely time tugging the tiger in the shower each morning - that eliminates the need for a goo glove. But, the day is long, masturbation's fun, so unless we want to take 4 or 5 showers every day, we're gonna need some other options. So let's start with the basics. Tissues. Perfectly acceptable backstop for all that Creamy Italian. They can be rough and dry on such soft, sensitive skin and it can stick to your dick head like a fuckin' band-aid - ouch. From there we move on to more lubricated flack-catchers - specificially, bananas. Step one: Peel the banana. Step two: Slip the peel over your Randy Johnson and start pitching. Now for extra credit, warm up the peel in the microwave. Not too hot! Serious yowza. Also, olive oil, moisturizer, honey, spit, butter, hair conditioner, and Vaseline can all be used for lube. In my opinion, the best lube... is lube. So save your allowance and invest in some soon. Alright, moving on - when you tug your Thomas on the toilet - ffft - shoot right into the bowl. In bed - soft t-shirt, perhaps a downy hand towel of your very own that you don't mind tossing after tossing. There's no such thing as polishing the raised scepter of love too much. It reduces stress, it enhances immune function. Also, practice makes perfect. So work on your control now, while you're a solo artist - you'll be playing some long, happy duets in the future. Ok - class dismissed.
[Shane gets up to walk away]
Andy Botwin: Hey!
[tosses Shane a banana]
Andy Botwin: . Homework.

I love that stuff, I used it in restaurants if it's around.

But when I see it on the shelf, and pick it up to buy it, I read the ingredients and see preservatives like sodium bisulfite in there and I pass, thinking that I should prob cut back on my bisulfites.

First saw it occasionally in thai/vietnamese restaurants about 12-15 years back, but it's become a lot more common in the last 5 years or so. It's good stuff. My one gripe about it is far too many sushi places use it as the spice in their spicy tuna, and it just overwhelms the tuna and blows out your tastebuds. Might as well be eating tofu, as you won't be tasting too much else for the rest of the meal.

LOL! I remember having dinner with POC at the late lamented LongLife Noodle House @ Metreon, and she LURVES her some spiciness -- she used a ton of it on whatever she was eating. I tasted a couple drops and found it way too spicy for my wimpy taste buds.

my personal fave is Ton Kiang (Geary betw 22nd & 23rd), pricey but superb. My fave Chinatown hole-in-the-wall is Dol Ho at 808 Pacific.  And way out on Balboa is Shanghai Dumpling King for a cheap pig-out. Are you gonna be here the same week as Gaz?

Agree completely with Mike on Ton Kiang and Shanghai Dumpling--both great. Also recommend Yank Sing if you're downtown (they're in Rincon Center at 101 Spear) but they're pricey (Ton Kiang can be too, although less so than YS). And whatever you do, try not to go to Ton Kiang around midday on a Sunday--they're always jammed.

Blue Bottle is pretty good, and pretty expensive.   a handmade cup of drip (maybe 12 oz) will cost you $2.52 at the Blue Bottle Cafe (Mint Plaza).  it's a very precious place w big lines.

Never saw them at the store; yes, they're basically blue Hostess Sno-Balls. Blue-balls, if you will.  I've seen the pink ones, the green St Patrick's Day version, yellow for easter and orange for Halloween. But never blue. Now if they'd do lavender for Pride Day we'd have the whole rainbow!

ETA: damn, they also had blue-frosted cupcakes! (Turns out both were only available at Wal-Mart. Bastards!)

So, Hurt Locker is called Tierra Hostil over there? "Hostile Ground"? That's pretty good -- nobody in this country knew what "hurt locker" meant, anyway.

This is for Gaz, and anyone else with an opinion about burritos who's been in the NYC area.  My daughter just flew back to JFK today after a visit, and she almost brought a burrito on the plane with her for a friend.  She says there are no good burritos in NY.  I notice there's Chipotle restaurants in the area, but wondered what you thought about this issue.

There are Benny's Burritos and Harry's Burritos in NYC, both of which call themselves "San Francisco-style Cal-Mex". Benny's has been there for 20 years. and there's also:

Love Benny's in the village!  I get my burrito fix there when I'm in NYC.  They got rid of the "home of the San Francisco burrito" slogan, though.  I tried to show a friend the sign for laughs and it was gone.   :(

Benny's is good (I was there on Pride Sunday), and Chipotle is good (I eat there almost once a week during work shifts), but I wouldn't call either SF burritos.  The difference, I think, lies in the saturated rice and beans that complete the SF style, vs. the lime-sprayed rice (seriously - I've watched the spraying) and anodyne salsas of Chipotle.  Even worse is Qdoba, which seems to have set as a goal being the B- to every Chipotle B on the report card.  After 7.5 years in NYC, I still have not had what I would call a "San Francisco" burrito here.

http://blogs.sfweekly.com/foodie/2011/03/clean_cheese_ginger_ale_and_th.php#

I haven't posted anything about this here, but yes, this is a big concern to all artisan cheesemakers. Two small creameries in Washington and one in California have been shut down in the last 6 months (as well as several in other parts of the country) for having cheese that tested positive for either listeria or a strain of e coli. The FDA seems to be bent on making raw milk cheese their next cause celebre, even though it's more of a cleanliness issue than one of milk-borne pathogens. Still, we've put any plans to make a raw cheese on hold (we're currently doing only fresh pasteurized chevre anyway), with the hopes that this will be resolved, or at least that the feds will find another issue to chase. Both these pathogens are serious, but with regular testing and stringent sanitation practices, they should never have become the issue that they currently are.

I may have stopped at AG Ferrari once or twice, but Badfood Cafe hasn't been decent for a long time -- not that have been a regular patron of that place in a while, but I used to live closeby and went there quite a bit.     Back in the early 90s it was cool, it used to have cute tchotchkes, like thriftstore salt and pepper shakers, and it was always crowded at night when the bars dumped their patrons out.  Last time I went there, I forget when, but it was kinda a sad, overpriced  shell of its former self.

Fuzio, went there once, decided it was not a good value.  Of course, the only 'good value' I remember on that section of market was the old Swedish smorgasborg place, which disappeared in probably 94.  and I think Fuzio moved into that place, didn't it?

When was the last time you were at any of these places and what did you think of them?

Baghdad -- probably not since the '90s.

Ferrari -- I used to like browsing there and not buying.

But Fuzio -- I have always been a huge fan; one of the few places that serves their pasta al dente rather than overcooked. I eat there whenever I see a flick at the Castro (and often at the one in Embarcadero). It's a fave when I feel like going meatless, as their angel hair with fresh tomatoes is always good and the Sukiyaki Noodles (sadly no longer on the menu) was a fave of mine. Love the teeny tiny baby crabcakes appetizer. And their industrial-strength Tiramsu cake is maybe my favorite dessert in SF. Apparently they're doing repairs, so I hope that means they're re-opening at some point; they're always crowded so i can't imagine that the closure is permanent. There was a time when opening a decent restaurant in the Castro was a license to print money.

I used to make a point of stopping by the Bagdad for their key lime pie.  Never had an actual meal there.  But I echo Mike on Fuzio: I loved the place, totally in agreement on the noodles, and the variety was such that I didn't need to know what I was in the mood for before arriving.  And I thought the prices were quite reasonable.

And apparently the Castro location really is closed -- it was confirmed on one of the food blogs that they didn't renew the lease. That place was a goldmine at one time; their only location left is the Embarcadero one.

It's weird how a formerly thriving chain can fall from favor, or totally change the area they focus on. The one I think of that used to be all over the place in SF is Pasta Pomodoro (fair-to-middling, not particularly adventurous food; Fuzio was better, imo). I just looked at their website and they have two places left in SF: Noe Valley and Laurel Village. But in the 'burbs (east bay, north bay, san jose/sunnyvale) they're all over the place, and have a number of SoCal locations as well. Guess they figured that was more their demographic.

Apparently there are 3 Fuzios left: 2 in SF and one in Reno; they were once in 8 or 9 states, including a location in Wash DC.

Meanwhile, after being in disarray for what seems forever, Metreon now says its new improved food court (a dozen choices, they claim) will open in November:

La Boulangerie so close is dangerous~!

I love their bread pudding.  I love their everything, really.

Oh man.  I love their everything too!  Macarons, chocolate croissants, sandwiches...you name it.

I work near the former Virgin Megastore space.  Rumors were flying about Trader Joe's or Best Buy taking over.  Alas, it's going to be yet another Forever 21 clothing store.  (Why???)

I give occasional tours of Coit Tower's murals (tours are offered every Saturday at 11 am, they're free, part of the City Guides tours: http://sfcityguides.org/desc.html?tour=13) and there's a mural in the stairwell called Power Street.   (The stairwell is normally closed to the public, so the tour is really the only way to see the murals there and up on the first level...  it's worth it.)

Every time we get there, I'll point out the B of A building and say it's now a Forever 21 store.  People either go Ha! or Tsk-Tsk.  well, at least the building still stands...

Thanks to a blurb in Leah Garchik's column in the Chron, my new fave food blog, by a guy who resolved last year to eat at EVERY Chinese restaurant in SF. He's up to #400 of 415 so far. And yes, Shanghai Dumpling King is in his top ten. Oh, he eats other food too.

Funny, in NYC last week I noticed that Duane Reade (the ubiquitous drugstore chain there) was doing the same thing -- many of their stores are now half supermarket/half pharmacy.  I didn't know that Duane Reade is now owned by... Walgreens!

From SF Foodie @ SF Weekly:

Food Along Party Lines. Hunch.com released this chart of stats

http://blog.hunch.com/?p=48884

gleaned from almost 350,000 respondents, dividing eating habits along political lines. These fun facts are sure to provide a few chuckles -- conservatives qualified Chinese takeout as "exotic ethnic food," liberals are more likely to find a bacon cheeseburger "disgusting," and everybody prefers a diagonally cut PB&J. Maybe reaching across the aisle should involve a hummus-for-meatloaf exchange?

LMAO!!!!!  Best article ever!  ;D

Especially love this line: "We know, we know, you love the stewed tripe and stinky tofu at that one hidden gem in the Outer Richmond."  HA.  I wish tripe (& other parts) wouldn't have earned people culinary street cred, though, because it's made the price go way up.  >:(

Only thing that they don't get right is Ajisen Ramen.  It doesn't have enough of a presence here to put it in the same category as PF Chang's, etc, & they only wrote a small not-terribly-entertaining paragraph at that.  Yoshinoya "Beef Bowl" is corny & would have been much better...or even Red Lobster.  They could have written a paragraph about the cheddar bay biscuits! :)

Kinda makes me sad.  I grew up across the street from that Cala on California St.  My mom still lives there, actually.  I used to fetch a pack of Kents for her from the vending machine there when I was 9.  I also got caught nicking a box of Cherry Pop Tarts there when I was a kid.  ::)  Er...so many memories for me!  But, still...Trader Joe's gets a hell yeah!

It can easily be preserved and TJ-ified as-is, so I'm guessing that's what they'll do. There was talk that when Cala closed it *would* be torn down and a big ol' luxury high-rise would go up on that corner, so I guess this is the best that could've been hoped for... unless they build on TOP of TJ's.

Bissap Baobab, the Ethiopian restaurant on Mission near 19th that's been there for about a decade, has moved to new digs around the corner. In its place is a new bar/club called... wait for it... "Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem"!  So, do they show old Muppet Shows 24/7?  Must investigate.

In other Mission food news, a new BBQ joint called Baby Blues just opened (Mission @ Precita) -- apparently a branch of a SoCal place.

Excellent piece. I can think of exceptions to one or two of his points, but they're specific to my current locale (in the middle of Oregon Pinot Noir country) so pretty much all of what he says is generally dead on.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/20/dining/20united.html?_r=1

and that article has a link to a recipe for Sriracha mayonnaise!  TANC2!!

Damn, that looks mighty fine!  I, too, love deviled eggs.

Sriracha is pretty great, except when sushi bars use it to make the spicy tuna spicy. Thus obscuring any chance of tasting of your next three pieces of sushi. I much prefer pepper-infused sesame oil.

I'm a big fan of Crystal hot sauce, and the Tabasco Chipotle pretty much rules, too.

We discovered this sauce in Paso Robles, it's made in Gilroy.  It's yummy!

We had our department's "holiday lunch" today at Pican in Oakland (B'way & Grand) -- upscale "Southern cuisine". Yummy. Crawfish salad sandwiches, Fried Chicken, ribs, hush puppies, sweet potato fries. Good eatin'.

Tonite I had dinner at Pacific Cafe out on Geary -- my first time, despite the fact that it's been there since the '70s and I've been here since '91. Many have talked it up to me (including own own Geoff) and it was as advertised. Heavenly crabcakes. Yum.

Well chosen--one of my fave dishes at one of my fave SF restaurants.  More crab than cake. Hope you had the clam chowder too--one of the best. If only the free wine while you wait were a little better.  But free is good.

If you like crab, try the crab louie next time. TONS of crab, and you don't have to crack or pick any of it.

Glad you liked it.  We are so set in our ways, I'm not sure I've had their crab cakes, even after dozens of visits!

Agreed. There have been several better bbq places around SF during Big Nate's lifespan, but they're mostly all gone (RIP Cliff's, Art's, Collier's, Do City, Firehouse, and the list goes on) and Big Nate made it to 2011, so there you go.  Is Brother In Law's still going? Memphis Minnie's is OK. For reasons I can't quite fathom, SF has never been a big barbecue town; they come and they go but they don't have too much longevity.

TANC: last week I tried Baby Blues BBQ in my neck of the woods (Mission @ Precita) -- it's the lone SF outpost of a SoCal chain, apparently and it's been open about a year, been on my "I gotta try that place" list for a while. It was passably good.

Yank Sing is probably the best dim sum I've had in SF proper, but as the Weekly's reviewer points out, it's pretty damn spendy compared with a lot of other dim sum places. Ton Kiang is admittedly not as good, but I have had a few really fine meals there--and they were on my side of town!

All that said, the last time I was in the bay area for more than two days, some friends took us to a place in Emeryville that was just incredible, every bit as good as Yank Sing imo. It's called Hong Kong East Ocean, and it's all the way out at the end of Powell Street on the Emeryville marina. Great location, killer views (if it's not foggy) and we *loved* our meal there.

Reminds me of a story Jim Bouton told in Ball Four in which the clubhouse man included chicken a la king along with the usual post-game spread, and was derided for daring to include such unorthodox fare along with the steaks, hotdogs, and burgers.

I was at the Epic Roasthouse that day but missed out on their little nibbles they passed around. I got to eat AL's cheeseburger, though, which was pretty good and it made me feel special to eat a celebrity burger.  Can't recall if it was too salty, but generally speaking I like to salt my beef.

Such is the way of BBQ joints in SF. They never seem to last more than a few years. (Big Nate's was the exception to that, and now they're gone too.)

I still miss Cliff's down on Bayshore. They were the best.

Who here likes cold-brewed coffee?  It seems like all the coffee shops in SF are serving their iced coffee this way...and a bunch in the SB/EB are doing it too.  Not as many in the peninsula but there are a couple.  It tastes pretty good...most of the ones I've tried are very low in acidity.  They're also usually much sweeter, even without added sugar.  I'm looking for a good one in SF.  Can someone recommend one/a few?  My favorite one in the south bay is at Cafe Legato.  They use Ritual Roasters, which I don't usually like because it's too acidic, but their brewing method gets it out and WOW--it has a very strong cola taste...it's almost like Pepsi Natural (http://www.doobybrain.com/2009/03/05/pepsi-natural-cola-made-with-sugar-and-comes-in-glass-bottle), even with no added sweetener...just with no carbonation.

I've been trying to make it at home with a very simple-looking machine called Toddy.  Seems to get good results with Starbucks Casi Cielo.

I started drinking Toddys a couple of years ago; there's a cafe near a farmers' market I was working that made cold brew and I'd get a tall one before the market. You're right, the flavor is great but that stuff is like rocket fuel--I'd be buzzing like a cheap TV.  Learned fast to either have them dilute it a little or to just order a short one.

Tinka, thanks for the rec! :)  Urth, LOL...so true, they're very strong.  Once my Mom was visiting when I made a batch and I forgot to warn her, so she drank an entire cup of it.  I usually dilute mine 1:1 with water or, even better, grass-fed milk to make a mean iced latte. :D  (To be even more pretentious, I sometimes make a syrup with TJ's 100% Cocoa Powder & a touch of raw honey...and voila, an iced mocha!)
