Title: Geoff's latest blog post
Post by: ggould on January 24, 2005, 02:51:38 PM
When I was down in Anaheim, a friend told me he had read my blog, I asked which one, and he just identified it as something 'depressing.'

That got me thinking, so even though it is still somewhat depressing, my latest blog is merely a Non-Sequitur comic strip:

no longer available

This makes me wonder, if we should have some sort of standalone category for announcements, that shouldn't probably get buried as quickly as other items in the 'stream of consciousness' area.

if you want to comment on the cartoon, go here:

I think an "announcements" standalone forum is a very good idea.

I also think your choice of cartoons is impeccable.  Surprised "Boondocks" didn't think of that one first.

Speaking of Boondocks... didya know they're turning it into a TV series? It'll be part of the Cartoon Network "Adult Swim" lineup this fall.

Supposedly not... The cartoonist (his name escapes me) has control. there was an item in EW last week. He said "we're gonna piss people off."

I've got the big book of collected Boondocks, will bring it around next time.

'announcement' is actually a type of post (with different icon), as is a 'sticky' (something which will not fall down the queue).

Yes, there are those types of posts.  I was referring to a different topic on the same leve as the Stream of Consciousness topic.  That way it would stand alone, and not get drowned out in the backscatter.

This is just a short meditation I was asked to write for my church, and I figured I ought to just put anything I write in a blog, so I did.  I'm telling you guys because there are 4 musical references in it.  One is stated, one is obvious, one is potentially obvious, and the last you'll never get.  I guess I should think of a prize for the winner, but there won't be one, so no bother.

If you're curious, it's here:

And the last two lines:

“There once was a note, pure and easy
Playing so free like a breath rippling by”

Are from one or maybe two Who songs: Gettin In Tune and Pure and Easy. But that's gotta be one of the obvious ones.

And further to POC's call on Zabriskie Point, the Dead (and Garcia solo) contributed to the soundtrack for that film.
Title: three out of four
Post by: ggould on January 27, 2005, 02:08:59 PM
clearly stated: the Byrds quote
obvious: the 'Pure and Easy' quote from Pete Townsend (extra credit for all three times it was used on LP's)
Less obvious (but you guys already got it): the Zabriskie Point reference, with all the cool noodlings.

The fourth one is the one you'll never get, and that's for a number of reasons.  Easy when you start from the end, but not from the other direction.

Title is a musical reference

http://ggould.blogspot.com/2005/02/its-all-too-complicated-now.html

[much later, I just realized I never said what the title was about. It's a reference to "Complicated Now" by Johnny and the Distractions, a song that was played a lot on KSFX during the brief rock period (didn't Dave Morey work there?) before the KFOG era. I have the vinyl, but have never heard the song on the radio since.]

I'm not sure this will be of interest, but what the hell.  As janitor here, I guess I can use up a few digits.  What I have posted is an essay I wrote last week for one of my classes at school.  It only has one musical reference, and uses the word 'ebonics' and has a link to a Malcolm X poster.  Pretty jumbled, but if you're bored, read on:

I stole this for my blog, but it's so short, no reason to go to my blog to see this:

FROM THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN'S "SHORT & SWEET" COLUMN:

"Other than telling us how to live, think, marry, pray, vote, invest,
educate our children and, now, die, I think the Republicans have done a
fine job of getting government out of our personal lives."

Someday soon we Americans are going to have to have the painful and essential conversation: Was our nation founded to be a Christian nation, or a nation of religious freedom?  I'm not one to look to "our founding fathers" as the wellsource for all wisdom, but it seems there are many among us who feel that Christianity is the national religion, and something large and uncomfortable is going to have to happen to disabuse them of this notion.  Lately I'm finding that any oppression I feel as a gay person pales in comparison to the oppression I feel as a non-Christian (though the two are in ways intertangled).

The whole fundamental concept that in our style of democracy, the minority is protected, and not abused is lost on most people.  It's primally important!

I guess I need to watch the last of the 3 Ring movies to truly get it, but hopefully the bad guys don't win in the end.  I don't know what happens to Frodo, but back in the 60's, during the era of peace buttons, etc., some people wore "Frodo Lives" buttons, which suggests he appears to die, but people don't believe it.  Don't spoil it for me, I'll watch it someday.

I think one or two of those buttons appear in the video for Leonard Nimoy's "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins."  But I'm afraid to watch it again to find out for sure.

You mean you haven't read the books?  I have to guess you are the only Deadhead English teacher on the planet who can make that claim.

Now if you are worrying about Frodo dying in the end...
ETA  [Rod made me delete this part]

The obvious implication of the bumper sticker is that Bush is every bit as bad a villain as Sauron, and in our parallel universe he's winning.

Well, I guess I just need to see the 3rd film soon, so I can not be in this position again.  As far as being the only Deadhead teacher, I guess I always got some sort of lightweight vibe off of the Ring stuff, so I never read it.  The movies don't really make me want to read them either, but I sure hear a lot more references to this stuff in Led Zeppelin songs now.  I never knew what this stuff was before!

PS, I just put it in my Netflix queue.  I'll absorb it ASAP, though not in one sitting!

That's if I don't kill myself first, if I play another round that bad!  I'm trying to break 100, have gotten close a few times, and here I go, almost breaking 150, moving in the wrong direction!

The De Laveaga blue tees were ridiculous as far as changing the shots from simply longer (I don't mind longer) to like being in some kind of gun barrel!  I lost a lot of balls!

That's the same day as the final round of our Club Championship.  Unlikely I'll make it that far, especially if I qualify for the Championship Flight (no handicap).  But you never know.  We play early in the morning, most likely I'd be done before you start.

Don't give up on the game yet!  You'll get there.

Earlier today, I thought I was making my last blog post for a while, when something tragic happened a few doors down.  A neighbor had committed suicide.  In a turnabout, I don't have anything clever to say, but hope that some of you might be able to share some knowledge or experiences.  Please consider sharing anything about this heartbreaking topic.

There are so few comics that have a point to them anymore.  I have a soft spot for "Muttz" but pretty much everything else is catering to the LCD (or, in the case of Mallard Filmore, the LDS).  And I'd bet money the "Seinfeld" reruns were no coincidence.

I anxiously await his ponouncements on the subject.  Needless to say, I'm in full agreement, though if I post on that matter, I'll save it for the right-wing thread.

*sigh*  I think we all deep down knew something like this would happen.  Bush would've eventually commuted Kenny Lay's sentence too, had the fucker not died.

Yep, it was inevitable. I'd suspect this had been arranged before the Libbey trial had even started. What's frustrating is that to my understanding, an action of this sort falls under "executive privilege" and there's no recourse by any other branch of government, save for impeachment. Which we don't want to happen, for the reason Geoff mentions in the last line of his blog.

There's nothing I can add to this that your commenters haven't already. Except that having a draft wouldn't keep the military from having "an inordinate proportion of low-income young people": the rich and connected would still find ways to get their exemptions.

Indeed, some weeks ago, Time magazine did a 10 Questions fluff piece with the dullard Jenna Bush (http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1670398,00.html) in which, on being asked why she and her sister aren't serving in their daddy's war, she replied, "if people really thought about it, they would know it's not even a practical question."  (Fortunately, a veteran's wife had the presence to ask in a letter the next week, "Ms. Bush, for whom is war practical?")

Yes, I think the responses this time were better than the blog itself.  In a perfect world, there would be no exemptions, male or female.  But corruption has a way of leaking through the cracks, doesn't it?

Glad to hear you're home and doing better, but jeez, you must have been scared s***less. (Not to mention Martha and your family.) Eat more fruits and veggies!

Echoing Rod's thoughts, every little bit of inspiration to improve one's own health is a good thing.  My issues are taking better care of my back & lowering my blood sugar.  I have lost some weight, which is a step in the right direction.

well, it reminds me of friends I've lost in the last few years due to heart attacks.  I skated this time, but "it comes like a thief in the night" and all that.  I've felt an urge to print out songs and poems in my head, instead of just letting them fade away (in more than one way!)

Glad you're with us! Never lose sight that you're worth it and don't let anyone tell you it's easy to change. It takes time and vigilance. Have fun on the road to new and healthy foods.

I have lost a little over 50 lbs. since Dec. 06. I struggle daily but it's so worth it. Every now and again I'm the recipient of emails from well-meaning friends that tell you how to recognize the signs of a stroke and little tests you can do to see if you might be having one or witnessing one in another person. I keep the emails but I think I should get reacquainted with them.

Take care!!! Be well.

I was pretty flattered and quite touched by this, and began to wonder how original or obvious this phrase was.  I have been thinking about writing a song, so I just Googled "Don't Stand in the way of Love" and found some song by Jennifer Love Hewitt called Can't Stand In The Way Of Love.  I don't really know who she is, but I'm pretty clueless about pop culture these days.  Have you guys heard this song before?

She's an actress, not a singer (primarily), known more for her cleavage than anything else.

What Mike said.  She did try to embark on a sidebar singing career but it flopped terribly.  Even calling the lead single "Naked" couldn't get her onto the charts.

The lists posted so far have only proven my exasperation at doing this.  How could I leave off "What's Going On" and "Layla?"  This is more like a 'who do you let into your fallout shelter?' kind of thing.

And, as Gaz points out, leaving Stevie Wonder off a list makes no sense either (I'd go with Innervisions).

Also on my list, at varying times:

Electric Ladyland, Jimi
Quadrophenia, Tommy, and/or Who's Next, the 'oo.
Live! The J. Geils Band and/or Bloodshot, The J. Geils Band
The Best of Al Green, Al Green (best ofs are cheating, but worthwhile in this case)
All of the LZ albums, prior to In Through the Out door.
Some Girls, The Rolling Stones
Bridge of Sighs, Trower
Frampton Comes Alive!, Frampton (Seriously.  Nothing takes me back to my youth like FCA!)
Born To Run, Springsteen
Not Fragile, BTO

And so on.

ETA:  Funny how many of my top albums have an exclamation point in their titles:  Look Sharp!, Frampton Comes Alive!, Live! The J. Geils Band.  And I'm not sure I can come up with any other albums that even have exclamation points.  Odd.

Innervisions is my favorite of his albums overall, but I'd have to take Songs in the Key of Life because I wouldn't want to live in a world without "As" and "Another Star."

There's a quote often attributed to Jimi Hendrix: "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."  I imagine people have been making variations on this sort of wordplay for years and years; no one can know who originated it.

Since I'm extremely gullible, I'll respond.  Mark (I think it was our Mark, he didn't leave last name) made a comment on my blog post about Mr. Spock being credited with the line that "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" should have been credited to Jeremy Bentham.  I was just extending the Spock riff.  </unnecessary explanation of the semi-obvious>

I thought both speeches were very good and did what they were supposed to do.  It intrigues me that all these "Reagan Democrat" types (blue-collar, Michigan/Pennsylvania/Ohio) who *LURVE* HRC even tho' the right has demonized her for 16 years, can turn around and say Obama's "too liberal" or somesuch. Does not compute.

We have to cry foul when pundits, bloggers, and talking heads repeat known lies before they become memes.  Our letters, our voices, in unison can shout down their lies.

We have to realistically acknowledge Obama's and the Democratic Party's flaws, and do what we can to correct them (such as the protests against Obama's FISA vote).

We have to cast careful eyes on the election process itself and fight misinformation from those who would disenfranchise.

And I'd suggest that those of us who have Election Day free should spend the day at a polling station, making sure that every vote is registered, every voice heard, no one intimidated from exercising her right to vote.  (Personally I'd like to see some coastal folks man polling stations in, say, Ohio, to ensure no improprieties.)

Starting to become more hopeful. Definitely more of a swing to the left up here. I have hopes that Jeff Merkley will take Gordon Smith's (incumbent Repub) seat in the senate, too. But I agree with Joe--just want the next 19 days to pass quickly.

However, I am still not trusting the GOP not to pull some kind of dirty tricks to swing the election again. We gotta watch those f***ers, they're sneaky as hell.

I'm really glad you brought this up.  From "7 Things That Could Go Wrong on Election Day" (http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1853246_1853243_1853233,00.html):

Quote
"Joe the plumber" is not registered to vote. Or at least he is not registered under his own name. The man known to his mother as Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, who has become a feature of John McCain's stump speech, is inscribed in Ohio's Lucas County registration records as "Worzelbacher," a problem of penmanship more than anything else. "You can't read his signature to tell if it is an o or a u," explains Linda Howe, the local elections director.

Such mistakes riddle the nation's voting rolls, but they did not matter much before computers digitized records. The misspelled Joes of America still got their ballots. But after the voting debacle in 2000, Congress required each state to create a single voter database, which could then be matched with other data, such as driver's licenses, to detect false registrations, dead people and those who have moved or become "inactive." In the marble halls of Congress, this sounded like a great idea — solve old problems with new technology. But in the hands of sometimes inept or partisan state officials, the database matches have become a practical nightmare that experts fear could disenfranchise thousands.

In Wisconsin, an August check of a new voter-registration database against other state records turned up a 22% match-failure rate. Around the time four of the six former judges who oversee state elections could not be matched with state driver's license data, the board decided to suspend any database purges of new registrants. But database-matching continues elsewhere. In Florida, nearly 9,000 new registrants have been flagged through the state's "No Match, No Vote" law. (Their votes will not be counted unless they prove their identity to a state worker in the coming weeks.) In Ohio, Republicans have repeatedly gone to court to make public a list of more than 200,000 unmatched registrations, presumably so that those voters can be challenged at the polls, even though most of them, like Joe, are probably legit. "It's disenfranchisement by typo," explains Michael Waldman, executive director of the Brennan Center for Justice, which tracks voting issues.

Elsewhere the purges are peremptory. A county official in Georgia this year removed 700 people from voter lists, even though some of those people had never received so much as a parking ticket. Another Georgia voter purge, which seeks to remove illegal immigrants from the rolls, has been challenged by voting-rights groups that say legal voters have been intimidated by repeated requests to prove their citizenship. Back in Mississippi last March, an election official wrongly purged 10,000 people from the voting rolls — including a Republican congressional candidate — while using her home computer. (The names were restored before the primary.)

With just days until the election, the scale of the database-purge problem is unknown. Millions have been stripped from voter rolls in key states, but the legitimacy of those eliminations remains unclear. The sheer volume of state voter checks against the federal Social Security Administration database, however, has raised concerns. Six states that are heavily using the federal database were recently warned by Social Security commissioner Michael Astrue about the danger of improperly blocking legitimate voters. "It is absolutely essential that people entitled to register to vote are allowed to do so," he said in October.

Meantime, I still haven't gotten my confirmation of my change of address, so I'm not sure if I will ultimately vote in my neighborhood or back in Brooklyn.  At least nothing's hanging in the balance in NY.

Wow, I've never haerd of such a thing -- "a subway ride"?  I've never, in 30+ years of voting in 2 states, been more than 2 blocks from my polling place!

Likewise.  I think the only real fear we progressive types have to worry about is if this signals a lurch by Obama to the right.  I prefer to think that he is trying to pull Warren to the center.  What if 5 yrs from now Obama & Warrren said they were okay with marriage equality?  Wouldn't we look back on this as a masterstroke?

On a smaller scale, but similar in the moral outrage quotient, I'm minded of the backlash Paul Simon faced when he included Linda "I-Am-Gonna-Play-Sun-City" Ronstadt on the Graceland album.

Cable ripped right out of house!

ETA:  now at work with net access, it looks like a bus or something drove by house and ran through sagging wire hanging across street!

TANC:  I was cable-less Thursday thru Sunday (mostly).  Came home Thursday night, got the This Channel should be available shortly message on the TV, no dial-tone on the phone, and no internet signal (we have the Comcast triple play deal).  Called from work the next day, and they sent a tech out Saturday morning.  My room-mate handled that as I was at the golf course -- the cable was broken off at the outside connection.  I got home, started watching the first football game just before half-time.  During half-time, everything goes out again.  I call, set up an appointment for Monday.  They come, and the cable is cut a few feet from the outside connection.  Strange.

But maybe not.  Alameda Power & Telecom lost a battle with Comcast for Alameda cable business.  Last week Comcast took over all cable access on the island, and some people are upset.  So, I'm guessing sabotage is likely, though by no means proven.  Anyway, I hope they leave my cable alone for a while, as waiting on cable guys is not what I signed up for.

On the plus side, since I missed the 2 hour premiere of "24", I won't be watching that this season, which should free up some time.

Amazing! Wish my concert-going memories went back that far, but I didn't see my first show until '77 at Winterland (one of only two times I saw music in that room). However, during the mid to late 80s I started collecting some of the old Fillmore and Family Dog posters, and I own copies of two of the ones you referred to--the Jefferson Airplane/Ballet Afro-Haiti one by Lee Conklin, and the last one, the Closing Week of the Fillmore that David Singer did. Both beautiful pieces, and I'm glad I got them when I had the chance. I do miss the old Postermat in North Beach, and Ben Friedman, the kindly curmudgeon that owned it. He was a character in every sense of the word, and could tell stories all night long.

I stumbled across Lee Conklin's site, and sent him a note about the 5/29/68 poster, and he was kind enough to reply and even noted that in addition to missing the Buffalo Springfield angle, "Nor have they noted the prescient funereal mood of the poster."  Seems like a lot of the concerts I went to in that period had Lee Conklin posters.

Fine stuff, Geoff. Religion is the enemy of science (I'd love for you to take a trip to that "Creationism Museum" or whatever it's called, and write about it).  It is very very scary what these wing-nuts believe (and don't believe). I'm sure you saw the story this week about the bill in Congress (with 20 co-sponsors!) to outlaw "human-animal hybrids" as if that were a pressing issue in this country, or as if the Island of Dr Moreau actually exists. Sheesh.

We are definitely in an info overload situation about health care, which I think only helps the forces of the status quo.

Yes, my parents had many of those folk records.  As a lil' kid I'd listen to 'em when they weren't home (wasn't suppose to touch dad's records and stereo equipment)!  I'm seeing Roger McGuinn tonight at the new arts center in Pleasanton.  Thanks for the heads-up on that PBS program, it'll be on KQED/KTEH several times in Dec:

I had to put in my two bits.  I know many of you are real angry at Obama, and I'm not really trying to talk you out of it.  I called Senators urging them to filibuster any deal that would give in to the rich folk, but still, I'm not sure how it would have worked out any differently.

You are correct again, good sir.   Bill Maher suggested that the "compromise" was what Obama had planned all along, but I dunno. Either way most reasonable folks are pleased, incuding women independents, which is a good thing.

Hey Geoff, thank you for posting that link to WMWV's soundcloud  of both last weekend's shows. I have been listening in over the last few days to hear what they sounded like.

I know you're not going to Chicago (at least I assume not), but will you be posting setlists for those shows as well?
